Crises Build Nations and Create Men

“Crises in general create men... establish countries... make history... create a future... crises let you recognise the sword of your right hand.” These expressive words were previously spoken about crises by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. They were re-posted on Twitter by His Highness Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
These words have met with great interaction in various social media, not only because they embody a characteristic feature of the UAE, i.e. the ability to face crises and convert them into opportunities, but also because they reflect the profound insight and genius of leadership of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. These words show a unique ability to diagnose crises and challenges, find effective solutions to face them, and then proceed to make the future and avail of its tools.
It is not an exaggeration to say that these words clearly express the history of the UAE from its inception to the present. It has succeeded in addressing the various crises the country has faced and entrenched its federal structure. Why not? For Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed had closely witnessed the experience of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, God rest his soul, who founded the State of the Union, overcame the various challenges and built a modern state through strong will, true resolve and the people’s love for him.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s words on crises also express a prevailing approach and culture in the UAE: non-recognition of the impossible, seriousness in work and insistence on achieving miracles, whatever the nature of crises and challenges. The continuation of achievements in the UAE despite the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, which forced most of the countries of the world to stop their projects and postpone their future plans, is the best embodiment of these words.
The UAE has continued to implement its major projects, such as the Baraka Peaceful Nuclear Energy Project, or prepare for launching the Mars Hope Probe on July 15. The UAE is also moving forward in implementing its development plans, because this emanates from strategic planning that involves good preparedness for crises and emergency disasters, even if they were like the Novel Coronavirus pandemic. That is because it has a highly developed crisis management system.
At a time when the COVID-19 crisis posed an unprecedented challenge to many leaders in different countries of the world, with the associated feelings of fear, anxiety and dismay, and its adverse repercussions, it showed, in contrast, the genius of leadership in the UAE, as it provided a role model in the management of crises and turning them into opportunities, then proceeding towards the future.
This has been the content of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s messages so far since the beginning of this crisis. They have confirmed that crises may turn into opportunities as long as there is a creative leadership that is a source of inspiration for the people of the country, motivating them continuously to unleash their energies, innovation and creativity, in collaboration with the Government’s efforts to address these crises.
