National Service and Online Learning

Staff Colonel / Yousef Juma Al Haddad Editor in Chief
The announcement by the National and Reserve Service Authority of the online university education project for its personnel coincides with the year in which the UAE celebrates its milestone Golden Jubilee and prepares to launch a new stage in its development journey to the next 50 years.

The recently launched University Study Project for the National Service Recruits by the National and Reserve Service Authority in cooperation with the Ministry of Education is a qualitative initiative aimed at optimal investment of the period of national service in providing a modern educational path for recruits. This takes place in light of the successful digital education experience being implemented efficiently by the Government since the Coronavirus.

This initiative also confirms that since its launch in 2014, the national service project does not only seek to inject new blood in the Armed Forces, and train and prepare the nation’s youth to defend their homeland, but also to prepare the national human capital and invest in its potential to be a real addition to the national workforce.

This project, which allows all 12th grade students graduating from the academic year 2020/2021, who will join the 16th and subsequent batches, to study university courses via distance education, embodies the keenness of the wise leadership to actively make use of the national service period, allowing students to take advantage of the capabilities offered by the Armed Forces in completing their university studies. With its positive impact on the personality of students and the various skills and values of responsibility instilled in them, the national service period is a preparation period for them, as it motivates them to continue learning and develop their skills later on.

At the same time, the university study project for national service recruits keeps pace with global developments that view military institutions from an integrated perspective. It takes into account the specialised technical, educational, and leadership aspects, and considers the values of learning, innovation and development as part the criteria for evaluating the Armed Forces and their role in community service.

This explains the keenness of the armed forces in developed countries to provide quality education opportunities for all of their personnel. Therefore, the National and Reserve Service Authority’s permission for its recruits to enrol in university education coincides with the new roles of the military in the modern era, which include integrated educational and learning tasks, and seek to impart positive values to young people.

The UAE has adopted an ambitious strategy that relies on its youth who are armed with knowledge and positive values. In essence, this project reflects the Armed Forces’ forward-looking thinking that keeps pace with the future, and a commitment to national responsibility to be at the forefront of the institutions that participate in the achievement of the UAE’s future aspirations as they were during the past five decades.

The Armed Forces have not only been a force that defends the nation and preserves its various capabilities but have also contributed an active and major role in enhancing its development and qualifying national cadres to work in various fields of national work. They are now cooperating through this project with higher education institutions to develop and prepare the national human resources to engage in the UAE’s development journey for the next 50 years.
