Peace Treaty… A Sovereign Decision

By:Staff Colonel / Yousef Juma Al Haddad
Editor in Chief
The United Arab Emirates reaffirms that it is the voice of peace, wisdom and realism. Through its courageous and bold initiatives, it seeks to strengthen the foundations of security and stability and to achieve peace in the region. Since its recent announcement of its agreement with Israel on the commencement of full bilateral relations under the auspices of the United States, international reactions have continued in support of this important initiative in terms of its content and timing.
This initiative not only represents a fundamental breakthrough in the file of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and a serious attempt to revive negotiations that have been frozen for years, but also, and most importantly, it brings the two-state solution back to the fore after it almost faded.
The wide international support for this agreement by the United Nations, the European Union and many international powers, is certainly a recognition of the strong political influence of the UAE. At the same time, it reflects the great appreciation for the efforts and initiatives made by its wise leadership in order to build peace in the Middle East region. Besides, this agreement is an expression of the wisdom that characterises the UAE’s handling of the fateful issues of concern to the Arab and Islamic worlds.
The value of this diplomatic achievement becomes manifest if we take into consideration the fact that Israel rejects the various initiatives demanding it to abandon the “annexation plan”, and insists on proceeding with its implementation. But it ultimately responded to the voice of peace launched by the UAE, because it realises that it is an active and influential peace-making party in the region.
In letters of light, history will record how the Emirati initiative restored life to the Middle East peace process after it had retreated from the concerns of the international community. The UAE’s vision of the peace process is accepted by the international community, because it is based on the right of the peoples of the region to have security, stability and prosperity.

It also reinforces the values of tolerance, coexistence and acceptance of others. Therefore, the UAE has ensured that the agreement with Israel and the United States includes an emphasis on a fundamental point, which is that the holy sites in Jerusalem should remain open to worshipers of all religions, thereby blocking the plans of the forces of extremism and intolerance in the region.
The experience of past years confirms that courageous decisions are only made by exceptional leaders who have the ability to read reality and anticipate the future. That is why His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, is a role model for these leaders.

He not only enjoys a deep vision and an integrated understanding of the developments of the regional and international scenes, but he is also known for his remarkable positions in preserving the requirements of Arab national security and defending the causes of the Arab and Islamic nations, especially the Palestinian cause. This is why this agreement, which links the UAE’s establishment of direct relations with Israel with the latter’s abandonment of the “annexation” plan and its engagement in the peace process, is in reality in the interest of the Palestinian people. It is a sovereign decision and we do not accept interference in it.
