The UAE’s management of the Coronavirus crisis has been characterised by partnership and integration, not only between the government institutions, but also among community members. Everyone believes in the responsibility of confronting this pandemic and working to mitigate its effects. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Government has been working ceaselessly to develop its efforts to manage this crisis, based on the assessment of the effectiveness of the measures that are taken at each stage and how far they achieve the envisaged objectives; then it would proceed to the next stage with deliberate and conscious steps.
This would enhance confidence on the part of community members, citizens and residents, in the government’s management of this crisis, and make them more aware of the importance of adhering to instructions because they are already effective partners in managing this pandemic.
The Supreme Committee for COVID-19 Crisis Management has recently announced the formation of the National COVID-19 Crisis Recovery Management and Governance Committee, chaired by HE Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology. This is undoubtedly an important step that is consistent with the UAE strategy to manage this crisis and work to contain its repercussions and mitigate its effects on the members of society. This Committee includes members representing a number of ministries and federal departments, including the Ministry of Presidential Affairs; Ministry of Interior; Ministry of Defence; Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Ministry of Health and Prevention; Ministry of Economy; Ministry of Finance; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and many other institutions. Thus, it expresses one of the key features that distinguish the UAE approach to crisis management, namely collective effort and team spirit.
The Committee will develop proactive procedures for various establishments, identify their roles and responsibilities, gauge the performance of the entities concerned with return to normalcy, determine financial and economic factors required to support the post-COVID-19 recovery phase, and develop a complete strategic plan to be implemented by the various concerned ministries and entities.
The great success achieved by the Committee in facing this pandemic not only confirms the soundness of its long-term strategic planning and anticipation of the necessary measures for dealing with this pandemic according to the requirements of each stage, but also proves its ability to get ready for the post-COVID-19 recovery phase. The committee’s tasks also include working to keep pace with national priorities and enhance the sustainability of key focus areas such as food, water, energy and pharmaceutical industries, as well as promising sectors that have great future growth opportunities. These sectors include advanced technology that enables digital transformation, such as artificial intelligence, fifth generation technology, health care, communications, and infrastructure.
The UAE has provided an inspiring model in managing the Coronavirus pandemic crisis, whether through the appropriate precautionary and preventive measures that it has taken to prevent the spread of the pandemic, or by taking advantage of its advanced technical infrastructure through the successful online work and education initiatives. While managing the COVID-19 crisis, the UAE has confidently continued its ambitious projects, such as the timely launch of the Hope Probe and starting the operation and maintenance of Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, to prove that it is indeed a country that does not know the impossible.
