EURONAVAL 2020 Guarantees Networking of World’s Naval Ecosystem

Organised every two years, the EURONAVAL exhibition is preparing for its 27th edition to be held from October 20-23,  in Paris - Le Bourget. For 50 years, it has been the world’s leading event for innovation and naval technologies of the future, a privileged meeting place for industrialists from all over the world and military and state navy decision-makers.

EURONAVAL is a conference and trade show dedicated to maritime safety and the naval defence industry. Expected to gather more than 25,000 professional visitors from five continents, among them several chiefs of staff for the Navy and ministers of defence, EURONAVAL 2020 will also offer workshops, meetings and conferences in addition to the exhibitor stands.

Nearly 500 exhibitors from the world over are likely to showcase their latest innovations in the area of naval defence, including products like ships, weapons, equipment and hydrography, as well as services like maintenance, repair, training and simulations. Visitors will be able to set up meetings with exhibitors and each other as part of EURONAVAL Business Meetings, expanding their networks and starting deals and partnerships. The expo will also feature a packed programme of conferences, workshops and practical exercises hosted by industry leaders.

EURONAVAL, structured around a major exhibition of naval equipment and a number of themed events, guarantees networking of the entire world’s naval ecosystem. The exhibition is focused on the future and also strives to promote startups that embody innovation and agility in the sector. Another of its objectives is to promote the numerous professions and training courses in the naval industry.

First Major Post-COVID-19 Defence Exhibition in France and the World
The four-day event will showcase a full range of naval and maritime defence and security technologies, products and services. The exhibition will be preceded by a naval conference at the start of the week. The exhibition will have excellent facilities, security, parking, catering, conference halls and many other modern features.

On June 30, the GICAN’s ( French Naval Industry Association) board of directors took the decision to hold the exhibition. The end of lockdown and the resumption of industrial and commercial activity in France and in a large part of the world are all positive and encouraging signs after this troubling period of doubt and difficulty.

The formal and courageous decision to maintain the exhibition in October was eagerly awaited by industrialists, decision-makers and navy consultants. It supports and reinforces the organisers’ determination to make EURONAVAL the key event for the naval defence industry in 2020.

The organisers are happy to have a successful partnership with the Ministry of Armed Forces and the strong support of the DGA (General Directorate of Armaments).

The exhibition is open to exhibitors worldwide from companies or groups of companies which design, manufacture, maintain, repair or modernise naval equipment, including naval aviation equipment, refit ships, support fleets, train personnel, and promote, sell or provide naval and maritime security services, or produce documentation and journals connected with the naval and maritime security industry.

Furthermore, positive indicators including the number of registered exhibitors and the success of the call for applications for the SEAnnovation space are proof of the optimism accompanying the decision to hold exhibition. SOGENA, GICAN’s subsidiary in charge of organising the exhibition, is also working on the creation of a new space: the CYBER Naval Hub, entirely dedicated to cybersecurity.

“EURONAVAL 2020 will be the exceptional event of recovery and the first major post-COVID-19 defence exhibition in France and in the world. We are working to ensure that our visitors and exhibitors are welcomed in the best possible conditions and in compliance with the new health regulations. For this 27th edition, we will continue to offer innovative and original content, taking into account the major challenges that the naval defence sector will have to face in the years to come,” said Hugues d’Argentré, Managing Director of EURONAVAL.

EURONAVAL 2020 will be preceded by a major international conference on October 19 in Paris, bringing together industrialists, politicians, seafarers and intellectuals and centering on the leading topics of the future in naval defence.

At the 2018 edition and its 50th anniversary, EURONAVAL welcomed more than 25,000 visitors, notably Emmanuel Macron, the French President. For its 50th anniversary, EURONAVAL welcomed 142 official delegations including 101 foreign delegations representing 72 countries from five continents. The delegations benefitted from tailormade tour programmes, allowing them to discover the naval materials of the future that could equip their countries’ Navies. It is also worth mentioning the presence of close to 60 representatives of overseas organisations.

SEAnnovation 2020 to Promote Innovation Startups
In 2018, Emmanuel Macron, the French President, inaugurated the first edition of the SEAnnovation area when he visited EURONAVAL.
On April 2, EURONAVAL launched “SEAnnovation 2020”, the startup space created for EURONAVAL 2018 in partnership with Starburst and the GICAN.
The SEAnnovation seeks to promote around 30 French and foreign start-up companies in a dedicated space.

All startups involved in defence or dual civil-military technological innovations are invited to exhibit in the SEAnnovation 2020 space at the EURONAVAL exhibition. For the startups selected following the call for applications, this will be an exceptional opportunity to make themselves known and present their projects to prime contractors in the global naval industry.

Cyber Naval Hub, A New Pavilion Dedicated to Cybersecurity
On board warships, the large number of connected systems are potentially exposed to cyber-malware. For naval forces, establishing themselves in the digital space has become an operational priority. While recent ships incorporate a resilient cyber architecture for their on-board systems by design, the cyber threat is more difficult to apprehend for ships that have been in service for several years.

In partnership with CEIS, a company specialising in cyberdefence consultancy and co-organiser of the International Cybersecurity Forum (FIC), EURONAVAL has decided to create the CYBER Naval Hub by FIC, the first pavilion entirely dedicated to cybersecurity.

The industrialists, administrations or research institutes who will be present in the pavilion will have the opportunity to showcase their innovative solutions, intervene on targeted issues in the field of defence system protection applied to the maritime sector, and exchange knowledge with the entire ecosystem gathered on this occasion.

Huge Response to the Event
In this period of crisis, there are some factors that are encouraging for the EURONAVAL exhibition:

- Since the launch of the call for applications on April 2, the SEAnnovation space dedicated to startups has already registered about 60 candidates. This enthusiasm confirms the success of the scheme launched at EURONAVAL 2018 and the willingness of start-ups to exhibit and move forward.

- To date, the exhibition has the same number of registered exhibitors as on the same date in 2018. It is proof that the industry is counting on this end-of-year event and trusts the organisation to welcome visitors, delegations, exhibitors and journalists in optimal health safety conditions.

- The shipbuilding sector, with its long and cyclical order cycles, has in all likelihood suffered less from the crisis than some consumer and general public-oriented industrial sectors. The introduction of new health standards and work arrangements that respect the distancing regulations have slowed production, but order books remain at normal levels.
