Held After Four Years, Eurosatory Proves to be a Huge Success

Held after a four-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 27th edition of the international land and airland defence and security exhibition, Eurosatory 2022, which was eagerly awaited by the international community of the sector, proved to be hugely successful. 
 
In the particular context of conflicts at the gates of Europe, the latest edition turned out to be one of the most significant ones in the history of the exhibition.
A total of 1,743 companies and more than 100,000 professionals gathered in Paris from June 13 to 17 for the event, which brought together all the major players in the global defence and security market.
 
As many as 250 delegations from 96 countries, high-level executives and decision-makers from the public and private sectors, and project leaders attended the event over five days.
The success of the record-breaking edition could be attributed to the “reunion” and meetings between exhibitors, partners and international visitors eager to discover the latest developments in the global defence and security capabilities. 
 
Busy stands, enthusiastic exhibitors and crowded aisles were the hallmarks of the show. “The exhibition was qualitative, with stands designed and decorated for the occasion.

Exhibitors put a lot of energy into welcoming visitors and official delegations. Everyone was happy to be at Eurosatory 2022,” said Jérémy Vigna, Sales Director of the exhibition.
For the first time, the exhibition was inaugurated by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron. In the context of the war in Ukraine, the President of the Republic took advantage of the exhibition’s inauguration to recall the central role of the defence and security industry in the preservation of national and European sovereignty.
 
Visitors discovered the first French demonstrator of capabilities to respond to all types of humanitarian, industrial and/or environmental crises.
Seventy-five companies exhibited in HELPED - Humanitary Emergency Logistic Project and Eco Development - area, to present the whole spectrum of global capacities needed to support populations in case of major crisis and to restore the environment. 
 
Foresight, the new post-crisis world order, experience sharing and the dissemination of professional practices suitable for each profession were at the heart of 110 international conferences held throughout the exhibition. 
 
More than 300 speakers from all over the world shared their vision and reflected on the evolution of Defence and Security.
 
The Eurosatory Lab, a space dedicated to startups, attracted many visitors. The pitching programme allowed the discovery of many innovative startups during the different sessions on current themes: performance, maintenance, robotics, security and safety of territories, and artificial intelligence.
 
Here’s a look at some of the products, systems and services presented by the participating companies at the mega show:
 
Avon’s Boots and Gloves
Avon Protection developed and displayed a new range of products to protect military personnel operating in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) environments: the Exoskin-B1 High Traction CBRN Boots and Exoskin-G1 Tactile CBRN Gloves.
 
Avon Protection developed the Exoskin range of boots and gloves to supplement its CBRN respiratory protection products to protect personnel without compromising the wearer’s tactical agility in the field.
 
The Exoskin -G1 glove offers a critical operational advantage. The ambidextrous glove features a rubberised outer layer textured to maintain grip in wet conditions, with an intelligent, seamless inner knitted liner that has a conductive tip on both the thumb and forefinger. 
 
The Exoskin range was on display at Eurosatory along with Avon Protection’s full range of personnel protective equipment, including full-face respirators, escape hoods, SCBA systems, modular PAPR units, underwater equipment and ballistic helmets. 
 
SkyStar Aerostats
The Israeli-based aerostat company RT LTA Systems Ltd. presented its SkyStar family of aerostats, which includes the SkyStar330. 
The SkyStar aerostats are a self-contained, versatile, and easily transportable tactical systems, ideal for defence, border security and public safety missions. 
Offering availability of over 85 per cent in any given area, the SkyStar systems already accumulated more than 4,000,000 operational hours worldwide. 
 
Rami Shmueli, RT CEO, stated: “The SkyStar330 system, which is carrying up to 50kg payload, is used by our most advanced clients and most of them deploy the systems in places where you need maximum protection to operational teams. This feature will allow the users to fly the system even if the control room is on the other side of the world. This new capability is the first step towards a fully autonomous system that is already in development process and will be available to clients in the near future.”
 
Metravib’s Acoustic Detection
Acoustic gunshot detection, collaborative protection, interoperability and vehicle survivability were the main activities that Metravib Defence showcased at Eurosatory. 
Propelled by the French Army’s Scorpion programme, acoustic detection is establishing itself as a central technology for collaborative defence. 
 
Metravib Defence, the inventor of acoustic gunshot detection and supplier of acoustic localisation systems for “Griffon” Véhicule Blindé Multi-Rôle  (VBMR) and “Serval” (multi-role armoured vehicles) and “Jaguar” EBRC (armoured reconnaissance and combat vehicles), offers solutions to exploit, fuse and share data from theatres of operation.
 
PILAR V is the essential sensor in the vetronics enhancing situational awareness. Its innovative architecture allows interoperability with the (Système d’Information du Combat Scorpion) SICS Battlefield Management System, which shares data between “connected” vehicles in order to maximise the digitalisation of the battlefield.
 
FN Herstal’s deFNder Display
FN Herstal showcased the capabilities of its deFNder Remote Weapon Station (RWS) through full live dynamic demonstrations.
Available for land and naval applications, deFNder RWS is highly modular and accepts various types of armament. Each variant is available with an extensive range of customer-specified options and accessories to meet today’s operational requirements.
 
The deFNder Light and the deFNder Medium were on display at the Belgian pavilion. The deFNder Medium is capable of integrating and firing FN machine guns from 7.62x51mm calibre, 30mm cannons, 40mm AGLs, as well as guided rockets or missiles, from static platforms or mobile, manned-driven and unmanned ground vehicles whilst remaining very compact and lightweight.
 
BAE’s Vehicular Variety
Combat vehicles, artillery systems, and technologies for precision strike and situational awareness were among the capabilities that BAE Systems exhibited at Eurosatory.
 
The full size vehicles on display were the CV90MkIV infantry fighting vehicle, which was recently selected by the Slovak Army, the Archer 155mm mobile howitzer, and the BvS10 all-terrain vehicle, along with advanced guided weapon systems and situational awareness technologies.
The CV90 is combat proven and trusted and exists in more than a dozen variants for different mission sets. 
 
BvS10 is an armoured all-terrain vehicle ideal for operations in Arctic and cold weather environments. It can traverse ice, steep mountains, and rocks, and its amphibious capability allows it to swim while operating in some of the most remote areas the planet has to offer. 
 
Rafael Precision Missile
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems highlighted the Spike NLOS 6th generation precision missile at the show. 
Rafael’s Spike missile family of multi-purpose, electro optical guided missiles provides pinpoint precision at extended ranges with the NLOS variant successfully engaging non-line of sight targets. Spike NLOS, launched from air, land, or naval platforms, provides critical real-time tactical intelligence and damage assessments allowing it to adjust targets and abort missions midflight, and operate in both offensive and defence scenarios.
 
The Spike NLOS 6th generation, building on the operational success of the entire Spike missile family, includes several new, enhanced capabilities to account for modern battlefield needs and trends.
 
C2 for Robotics Systems 
Robotics and autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics’ command and control (C2) system for intelligent unmanned systems was on display at Eurosatory.
Milrem Robotics’ solution, developed in cooperation with Fleetonomy.ai, Rait88, MIL Sistemika and other partners, integrates multiple different unmanned aerial and ground assets (UxV) into a composite command and control system and merges sensor and effector data from multiple payloads. 
 
It allows the constant monitoring and controlling of the UxV systems’ most important variables, such as energy status, fault conditions, operating parameters, built-in diagnostic tests, initialisation, and configurations.
 
MEROPS ‘Crystal Clear View’ 
Turkish defence firm, Aselsan brought its next generation air surveillance and targeting gimbal sight MEROPS (Multi-spectral Extended Range Optical Sight) to Eurosatory for the first time.
 
“MEROPS design philosophy focuses on the real-world requirements of the armed forces under the combat situations. So, users can easily achieve a “Crystal Clear View” with the MEROPS under all possible viewing conditions,” said Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün – Chairman, President and CEO of the company.
 
The sight performs especially well under smoke, dust and prioritises medium and short-wave thermals to support dawn and dusk operations. These features make the targeting sight an operational asset in adverse conditions with an enhanced performance.
 
Plasan Sasa Patrol Vehicle 
Plasan Sasa unveiled its new Wilder military patrol and Special Forces vehicle at the show. The innovative clean-sheet design is offered by Plasan as a turnkey product or in kit form for local assembly by vehicle manufacturers around the world.
 
The Wilder’s central driving position offers a panoramic view to the driver and it has the mobility and off-road capability of a racing buggy, combined with the protection and remotely operated firepower normally only seen on vehicles weighing twice as much.
 
The crew can dismount and remotely drive the vehicle and its weapon to a vantage point without putting themselves in danger. With this integrated drive-by-wire capability and associated cameras and sensors, the Wilder is also ready for fully autonomous operation.
 
AM General’s Tactical Truck
Global mobility solutions provider, AM General, showcased its Humvee Saber light tactical vehicle and Soft Recoil Technology.
“It was exciting to be back in Paris after a four-year hiatus. Eurosatory provided us a great opportunity to engage with global customers and display our innovative solutions based on their requirements,” said Jim Cannon, AM General President and CEO.
 
The Humvee Saber is redefining survivability with 360 degree kinetic and blast protection in a truly light tactical vehicle.
For Eurosatory, AM General partnered with Elta North America, to upfit the vehicle with a mobile Counter Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) designed to track, identify, and deter/defeat various UAS while the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle features MBrace, an advanced occupant protection system by IMMI, to add head and neck protection during adverse events.
 
R&S Cutting-Edge Monitoring
Rohde & Schwarz unveiled a new sensor, software and two new antennas that offer cutting-edge COMINT/CESM or military spectrum monitoring solutions.
The COMINT/CESM innovations include the R&S UMS400 lightweight universal monitoring system, new direction finding and monitoring antennas, and intuitive R&S Ceptor radio monitoring software.
 
The new sensor, antenna and software portfolios are dedicated for communications intelligence (COMINT) and communications electronic support measures (CESM) and provide operators with cutting-edge solutions for spectrum dominance and situational awareness. 
 
MoU on MBT
Poland defence firm Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) and South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem company signed a memorandum at the show to jointly develop tanks and armoured personnel carriers.
 
Poland’s Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak tweeted that the deal was an important step in the development of Poland’s armed forces and defence industry.
Hyundai Rotem is offering its K2PL Main Battle Tank (MBT) to Poland as part of the Polish Wilk new generation MBT procurement programme. As part of the proposal, a brand-new MBT would be developed, in collaboration with the PGZ group. Poland is also reportedly interested in acquiring existing K2 Main Battle Tanks.
 
RAPIDFire Weapon
Nexter exhibited solutions that meet the needs of anti-drone and ground-air defence at the show and in partnership with Thales offered the RAPIDFire weapon system for low altitude ground-air defence.
 
Nexter presented weapon systems such as the ARX 30 and RAPIDFire, equipped with medium-calibre guns, offering surface-to-surface and surface-to-air capabilities to counter new threats such as drones, missiles or loitering munitions at short and medium range.
 
These weapon systems have the advantage of being able to deal with a large number of simultaneous threats such as a swarm of drones, to adapt the munition rapidly to the target in the face of combined threats, to benefit from excellent reactivity at short range and, above all, to have a low cost. 
 
Smash X4 Fire Control 
Israeli fire control systems developer Smart Shooter unveiled Smash X4, a fire control system with a x4 magnifying optic scope, at the show.
Smash X4 is designed to increase the accuracy and lethality of small arms. The Smash systems use video analysis to enhance a shooter’s effectiveness. Once the shooter selects a target by pulling and holding the trigger, the system waits until it has “lock-on” and neutralises the target.
 
Smash X4 combines a x4 magnifying optic scope with Smart Shooter’s Smash fire control capabilities, providing extended detection, recognition and identification ranges for the shooter as well as extended lethality ranges. 
 
MKU Optronic Solutions
MKU showcased its defence and security solutions at the show. The company has supplied its products to Germany, Spain, Norway, Sweden and Estonia.
”MKU’s optronic solutions were developed after listening to the problems of the modern soldier. The Netro NB-3100 Aviation Night Vision Goggles and Netro Aiming Solutions have been evolved as a solution to such problems,” said Prachi Gupta, CEO of MKU’s optronics division.
 
The company showcased two optronic solutions: Netro NB-3100 Aviation Night Vision Goggles and Netro Aiming Solutions. The first is designed to help aircraft and helicopter pilots navigate while flying at low altitudes or taking off or landing in pitch darkness or threatening conditions. The latter comprises sophisticated sighting solutions for those operating grenade launchers, heavy and light machine guns and rifles.  
 
Tyron Tyre Protection
Tyron Runflat launched the new All-Terrain Rubber (ATR) EasyFit at the show. 
The new ATR-EasyFit fills a significant gap in the market for lightweight rubber runflat solutions for light armoured vehicles running on 16” wheels right through to 22.5” wheels used on military and commercial logistics vehicles. 
 
“Lightweight 4x4 vehicles with standard wheels are used for multiple critical military and security applications including Special Forces, border guard and small logistics vehicles and trailers,” Peter Simson, Director, Tyron Runflat, said. 
 
Beesense-DST Merger
Beesense Systems, an Israeli company specialising in precise electro-optics systems and multi-sensor surveillance solutions, announced a merger agreement with DST Control, manufacturer of gyro-stabilised gimbals. 
 
Beesense Systems, part of the Avnon Group, design, develop and manufacture advanced integrated multi-sensor system, providing actionable intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance solutions to the HLS, defence and civic sectors. 
 
The merger with DST Control will expand Beesense’s portfolio, enabling it to enter the Gyro-stabilised gimbal market and provide end-to-end solutions for maritime and aerial surveillance applications. 
 
DST Control, a Swedish company, founded in 1989, manufactures lightweight gyro-stabilised electro-optical systems. 
 
Dual EIMOS Display
Expal showcased its technological capabilities in ammunition and weapon systems.
The company highlighted dual Expal Integrated Mortar System (EIMOS) weapon System, in service in Spanish Navy. This 81mm Onboard Mortar System has been developed through an R&D Programme with the Spanish Ministry of Defence, following the most demanding requirements of the Navy (Marine Corps) and Army. 
 
The R&D Programme concluded early 2021, with a first batch of Onboard Mortar Systems delivered last December 2021. 
 
Dual EIMOS stands out for having been designed for Shoot & Scoot, providing mobility, automatic 360º aiming and firing without the need for additional stabilisers, the ability to overcome steep slopes and, as a unique feature, deep fording without preparation.
 
Record Attendance
The 2022 edition, which stood out as a record year in terms of attendance, was part of the momentum of three major global trends: the return of inter-state conflicts, global warming, and the digital revolution. 
 
Charles Beaudouin, the exhibition’s CEO, pointed out, “Held in the context of a new world order, Eurosatory reinforced its position as the world’s most important D&S event, setting trends in the management of all crises, from war to environmental disasters”. 
 
The message from the organisers: ‘Save the Date for the 28th edition of Eurosatory: from 17 to 21 June 2024.’
