UAE Pavilion at DSA 2018 a big success

The UAE national pavilion at the 16th Defence Services Asia (DSA) Exhibition and Conference that ended in Kuala Lumpur recently stood out in terms of excellence of organisation and the high quality technology and services offered by the participating entities.

The UAE Pavilion featured exhibitors from the wide spectrum of the UAE defence industry, displaying innovative ‘Made in UAE’ products and services spanning land, air, naval and security industrial sectors. UAE Pavilion enjoyed a lot of high profile visits, which enhanced the participation of its members. 
 
Mesfer Nasir Alkurbi, General Manager, Al Fattan Ship Industry said that the participation at the expo has helped his company link up with major players in its segment. Al Fattan Ship Industry’s main yard is located in Al Sadr Port, Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, with an area of more than 200,000 square meters and has multiple length of berths. Its commercial activities include but are not limited to building of steel ships, offshore and on-shore services, manufacturing, fabrication, repairs, and maintenance of vessels. The company is registered under the category of Higher Corporation for Special Economic Zones. 
 
Alkurbi said the company showcased search and rescue vessels at the DSA. “We have other fast patrol boats as well. The participation has given us more visibility and has enabled us to meet many delegations. We hope to have fruitful results from these contacts and would be keen to participate in other events  also.”
 
 Abdulla Omar Baslaib, Student Services and Registration Manager, Rabdan Academy said it was good to be part of the UAE pavilion and it was a very useful experience.
Rabdan provides future class multi-disciplinary learning environment of choice for the continuing development and integration of safety, security, defence, emergency preparedness, and crisis management professionals.
 
Abdulla said: “Rabdan Academy provides a selection of short courses designed for professional development of personnel working in the safety, security, defence, emergency, and crisis management sector. Depending on your chosen areas of study, we offer short courses over a one-week, two-week, three-week, or over a number of weeks. These courses can be full-time or part-time.
“Rabdan Academy exchange program me allows for a student enrolled in Rabdan Academy to study for one semester at a partner institution. And we are currently working closely with Virginia Commonwealth University.”
 
Eng. Faiz Saleh Al Nahdi, Chief Executive Officer, Tawazun Industrial Park said his company is a flourishing address earmarked to serve regional and international defence and security industry while working towards creating complete clusters around these sectors. With an impressive infrastructure designed and implemented primarily for defence, and  located between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Tawazun Industrial Park is playing a crucial role in the economic diversification of the UAE as a world-class destination for strategic manufacturing sectors, in line with the leadership’s vision of economic diversification for a more sustainable future.  “Our model here is single window. We support investors with industrial real estate and any service to support their operations,” Al Nahdi said. 
 
Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) is a private joint stock company that is fully owned by Mubadala, the investment arm of the Government of Abu Dhabi. Mubadala’s commercial strategy is fundamentally built on long-term, capital-intensive investments that deliver strong financial returns.  Hamad Al Tair, Vice President, Yahsat said: “Since being incorporated in 2007, we have implemented extensive research and interaction with customers to design the region’s first multi-purpose satellite system consisting of two satellites and related ground infrastructure.
 
“Our first-hand understanding of the specific market requirements in the region has enabled us to develop customised satellite solutions for the government as well as the commercial sector in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Central and South West Asia.”
Al Tair said: “At DSA our main objective as a UAE company in the space segment was to showcase our capability to players from other regions. We have met with numerous delegations and potential clients to discuss future projects with them. 
“The UAE pavilion provided great exposure and opportunities to connect with clients from different sectors.”
Mansoor Al Qubaisi, Senior Project Executive, Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA), which provides aviation offshore oil support and other services worldwide was also happy with the participation.
 
ADA is the largest commercial helicopter operator in the Middle East, operating 54 aircraft including 50 helicopters (15 AW139, 1 AW109, 22 Bell 412, 12 Bell 212) and 5 fixed wing (DHC-8-200 DHC-8-300 DHC-8-400Q). 
The company provides aviation offshore oil support and other services worldwide and in particular for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s oil and gas production companies.  In addition, the Company also provides VVIP passenger transportation services including Helicopter and Fixed Wing Business Jets, Search & Rescue for the UAE, crop spraying, aerial construction, seismic support, and fire fighting in Europe and third party maintenance support.
 
Mansoor said: “Abu Dhabi Aviation has constructed fully functional, state-of-the-art building, to facilitate Flight Simulator Training.  This Training Center will serve training requirements of all of its clients in the UAE and MENA region.  This facility is also set to develop to an international hub for Helicopter and Fixed wing training for type ratings on different aircraft.  
 
“The manufacturers could recommend this facility to their clients for their training requirements. Clients in the Middle East could reduce the cost of approaching other European facilities. The Fixed Wing Simulators will commence operation shortly. “
Mansoor said this exhibition had several avenues to give more exposure to the Aviation Industry. He thanked the sponsors for this opportunity, adding, “We hope to find new customers and multilevel expansion for the company.”
 
Fahad Abdulrahman Eisa, Senior Manager, Business Development, Abu Dhabi-based Caracal, the Middle East’s leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and small arms producer, said it was not the first time that Caracal was attending DSA. “We are proud to be here to work with our partners and sister companies in the UAE pavilion,” Fahad said.
“Our portfolio includes the latest technology 9mm striker-fired combat pistol, 9mm submachine gun (SMG) in standard, compact and suppressed versions, three tactical rifle platforms and three modular sniper rifles. These weapons are all of original design and have been developed in house for use by civilians or professional law enforcement and military operators,” Fahad said.
 
Fahad said Caracal was started in 2007. “All our products are already in service. UAE army is our main customer. But we have plenty of units around the world.  We have 100 per cent owned subsidiaries in Germany, U.S. and also Algeria. In Algeria they are doing pistol parts assembly for the African market. Last year we moved to Brazil too.”
“We recently attended the Defence Expo in India. There we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with MKU for strategic co-operation for the manufacture of the advanced CAR817AR rifles in India. The short stroke gas piston based design of the CAR 817AR makes it more rugged and stable in adverse conditions like mud, sand etc. The assault rifle will be manufactured in India at MKU’s proposed facility in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Indian government and will be offered to the Indian Army for their requirements. We have also participated in a big tender there where we have reached the commercial stage,” Fahad said. 
 
Khadija El Kontar, Business development Executive, Darwish Bin Ahmed & Sons Co. L.L.C was upbeat about her experience at DSA. The Darwish Bin Ahmed & Sons Group; founded in 1964 is one of the leading business organisations in the UAE  and has seen a year-on-year growth of more than 50 per cent in both domestic and international businesses now employing over 6,500 people. The Group has established its presence in a wide range of segments like Infrastructure, Military Projects, Marine, Material Handling, Oil Field, Quarry & Mining, Air Conditioning, Power Generation, and Transportation. “We are proud to support this exhibition by participating under EDCC,” Khadija said. “We got many delegations to visit us and the interactions were very useful.”
 
Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company’s (ADNEC) stand within the UAE pavilion at DSA, showcased the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) and the Naval Defence Exhibition (NAVDEX), which drew strong interest from key exhibitors and decision makers. 
Saeed Al Mansoori, Executive Director of IDEX LLC, said that ADNEC’s participation at the leading defence event was aimed at engaging with major players and updating them about the ongoing preparations for the 2019 edition of IDEX and NAVDEX. IDEX LLC organises IDEX and NAVDEX as part of its commitment to promote investments in defence-related sectors in line with the objectives of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.
 
“ln line with our priorities, IDEX LLC seeks to leverage its participation in specialised defence events to strengthen its relationship with organisations at the local and international levels as we have been witnessing massive growth in the industry in recent years,” Al Mansoori added.
Giving day-to-day coverage to all the companies exhibiting in the UAE pavilion as well as reporting on other key events and pavilions at DSA was the Nation Shield magazine, the official journal of the UAE Armed Forces. “It was a matter of great pride to write about the UAE pavilion that showcased the nation’s capabilities in defence and security. It was also gratifying to note that global defence majors reached out to us for getting coverage in Nation Shield,” said Major Jamil Khamis Al Saadi, Editorial Manager of Nation Shield.
Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), another participant at DSA, also drew a lot of visitors. With over two decades of experience in delivering uncompromising quality, ADSB is one of the region’s leading shipyards.

Another UAE company that made a mark at DSA was the International Golden Group (IGG). Established in 2002 with headquarters in Abu Dhabi, IGG PJSC specialises in providing high-end defence and security solutions. Recognised as a leading supplier to the UAE Armed forces, Ministry of Interior, and other defence and security authorities, IGG provides unsurpassed levels of services to our growing customer base by employing highly dedicated and experienced personnel.
 
IGG deals in military supplies such as small, medium and heavy arms, ammunition (all calibres), Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), self-propelled mobile guns, and multipurpose military vehicles as well as service solutions including consultancy services for military supplies and security solutions, maintenance and upgrade of military vehicles and military and security training. 
 
Etimad Holdings with diverse capabilities in security and communication solutions displayed its Al Fahad Security Systems, specializing in Systems Integration of Asset Monitoring Solutions, and CCTV and Access Control solutions. Al Fahad Communications and Networking Systems specialising in IP, Voice and Satellite Networking and Communications Infrastructure Security Solutions also participated. Al Fahad Electrical Systems presented tactical power solutions, health and safety solutions, as well as monitoring and alarm solutions. 
 
The UAE pavilion had as many as 17 exhibitors, representing key components of UAE defence industry. Managed by Tawazun Economic Council and the Emirates Defence Companies Council (EDCC), the UAE Pavilion was an effective platform to highlight UAE’s products and services and to promote initiatives for innovation, technology, and excellence.
