The New Tougher, Faster JLTV for Modern Battlefield

Only a select few military vehicles have ascended to iconic status over the past century. The likes of Germany’s Panzer II tank, the American Jeep and the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) or “Humvee” have found their place as the favourite tactical vehicles so far. However, the all-new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) is rapidly making tracks to the icon status.

Jeeps earned their off-road stripes during World War II and were much loved by the troops, who turned their two-letter name – GP into an enduring brand. Versatile enough to carry anything and go anyplace, Jeeps were light and simple enough that a three-man crew could extricate them when mud, soft shoulders or obstacles stopped their forward progress. But the early M38 Jeeps gave way to new Ford-built M151 1/4-tonne models commonly called the American Jeep, in 1951, which endured in US Army and Marine Corps fleets for the next 48 years.

The American Jeep was so famous that Enzo Ferrari, the legendary father of the Ferrari racing brand once quipped, “Jeep is America’s only real sports car.” The Humvee followed the suit to become global spotlight during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm for its distinctive wide stance and low profile. The Humvee also received much buzz partly due to the market availability of a commercial version. However, this iconic vehicle is becoming outdated for the changing tactics and requirements, advancements in armoured vehicle technologies and the emergence of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In fact, Humvees were designed for general purpose utility first and survivability second, and these 30+-year-old vehicles, simply lack the protective features of tactical wheeled vehicles built for mobility and protection.

Enter the newest icon in the pantheon of tactical wheeled military vehicles, one of the best in the world: The unparalleled JLTV. Built by Oshkosh Defense to the exacting requirements of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, The JLTV isn’t just the next great thing, it is dubbed as the all-new icon of agile, armoured mobility.

The JLTV Advantage
The JLTV is powered by a 340 HP Banks 866T 6.6-litre turbo diesel engine paired to a proven Allison 6-speed automatic transmission, delivering the power, torque, and off-road mobility to conquer any terrain. The vehicle can speed over highways at 113 kmph, and seamlessly divert off-road without stopping, to rumble over mountains, ravines, desert and mud at speeds of 70 per cent faster than any protected tactical wheeled vehicles in its class. The JLTV’s patented TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension provides 508 mm of wheel travel on all four wheels, enough to roll over rocks, flatten ruts and cruise over obstacles.

According to Mike Ivy, Senior Vice President of International Programmes and Global Product Support for Oshkosh Defense, “Nothing can close in on an enemy more quickly, get out of range faster, project power downrange, and protect its cargo and crew more effectively than the JLTV. Combat operations require military units to be mobile, fast, lethal, protected and connected, and the JLTV is a perfect fit for today’s mission requirements, as well as the needs of the future.”

In addition to being a highly adaptable weapons platform, the JLTV is a network on wheels and was designed from the ground up to be Net Ready for communications in denied environments. The integrated network on JLTV means the equipment and systems within the vehicle can be used independently or be interoperable to provide a common operational picture.

The JLTV’s integrated driveline lockup control provides extra traction when needed, and a centralised tire-inflation system lets drivers select among four terrain settings from inside the vehicle. With best-in-class armour, engineered ballistic glass and advanced V-hull design to deflect blasts away from the crew compartment, the JLTV boasts the best exterior protections on the market. The interior protection is as robust as the exterior with blast-protected seating, 5-point crew harnesses, and innovations like automatic fire-suppression systems in the crew capsule, engine compartment and wheel wells, which inspire confidence in combat. So does the range of weapons the JLTV can support, including manned or remotely operated machine guns and a variety of cannon missiles.

“The JLTV is much more than a highly-mobile combat vehicle. It’s a premier weapons platform that can support numerous weapons, including 7.62mm manned or remotely-operated machine guns, a variety of cannon missiles and even tube-launched missiles that can be mounted on the optional turret,” says Mike Ivy. Rear and side-mounted weapons are also available.

Proven Performance
The JLTV is an all in one package offering extreme mobility, best-in-class protection and superior firepower.
According to Oshkosh Defense, the JLTV reliability was assessed at more than double the specification requirement after 100,000 miles of U.S. Government Reliability Qualification Testing. International forces will also discover economies of scale given the U.S. military’s planned order sizes. Moreover, several countries have publicly expressed interest in procuring the JLTV, including Lithuania, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.

Some of the benefits of the JLTV to the international community include fleet commonality among coalition forces, as well as a vehicle that has already undergone rigorous U.S. Army and Marine Corps testing, making it the vehicle primed for a variety of mission requirements.
