Family First...A Close-knit Home,a Stronger Nation

Jaber Saeed Al Lamki
Executive Director of Defence Communications

As the UAE welcomed the new year on 1 January, the declaration of the ‘Year of the Family’ marked a national moment of profound significance. It reflects a clear understanding that the future of nations is not built solely on economic growth, technology, or infrastructure, but begins with the family—the primary foundation of society.
Designating the Year of the Family as a national theme carries a clear political and social message: people remain at the heart of the UAE’s development vision.

After decades of nation-building, modernisation, and carefully managed global engagement, the UAE recognises that preserving family cohesion is the true guarantee of sustainable growth and social balance.
Since the founding of the Union, the Emirati family has been the cornerstone of the modern state. From within the family emerged the values that shaped the UAE’s national experience. The country’s leadership has consistently viewed the family as a primary partner in development, a principle reflected in comprehensive policies and legislation spanning education, healthcare, housing, women’s empowerment, child protection, and care for senior citizens.

The Year of the Family arrives at a defining global juncture. Mounting economic pressures, accelerating digital change, and shifting lifestyles are redefining family life across societies, prompting urgent questions about balance, parenting, technology’s influence, and the endurance of human connection. In this context, the UAE’s initiative stands out as a practical and future-focused response, grounded in realistic policy choices.
This national initiative aims to firmly embed the family within public policy and strengthen collaboration between government entities, the private sector, and civil society in supporting family stability. It also provides an open framework for launching initiatives that respond to the evolving needs of Emirati families.

From a cultural and educational perspective, the Year of the Family carries profound importance. It draws attention to the family’s role in shaping identity, preserving language, fostering belonging, and transmitting shared memory across generations. Within the UAE’s multicultural landscape, the family becomes the stabilising force that harmonises openness with deep-rooted values, reinforcing a distinctive and inclusive model of coexistence.

Central to this vision is the role of women. The Emirati experience has demonstrated that empowering women does not weaken family cohesion; rather, it reinforces it. Emirati women are active partners in development, the emotional core of the family, and key contributors to raising future generations.

With the start of the year, responsibility moves from declaration to collective commitment—by institutions through policy, by the media through discourse, by schools through education, and by families through awareness. The success of the Year of the Family will be measured by their lasting impact and the sustainability of the policies and social culture they create.

The Year of the Family reaffirms a fundamental truth: a nation that has long invested in its people recognises that investing in the family remains the most enduring and forward-looking path to building a confident and stable future.
