Abu Dhabi 6G Summit Uncovers Vision for Next Decade

The inaugural edition of the Abu Dhabi 6G Summit 2022 organised recently by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a leading global scientific research centre and the applied research pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), offered a blueprint of the vision for 6G in the upcoming decade.

The global event that took place from November 3-4 at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island gathered experts from scientific and research communities, as well as industry leaders, and standardisation bodies, who are at the cutting-edge of wireless technologies, to discuss the roadmap for the implementation of 6G networks and the advancements taking place in the UAE and worldwide.

The summit explored vital topics of interest from today’s wireless technologies landscape, including sustainable 6G systems, and highlighted the opportunities and challenges of emerging 6G technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence-empowered communications, intelligent transportation systems, integrated communications, and more.

The Abu Dhabi 6G Summit 2022 featured high-quality insightful research and industry presentations, a demonstration track, and headline sessions from well-established researchers and industry leaders that showcased the latest research and ground-breaking prototypes currently under implementation in the world of 6G wireless communications.

Speaking exclusively to Nation Shield on the sidelines of the summit, Dr. Carlos Faouzi-Bader, Telecom Director of the Artificial Intelligence & Digital Science Research Center (AIDRC) at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), stated that technology should be presented in a way that people could trust them.

On the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in ensuring security for all, he said it was a domain that had actually become a part of many universities. He cited Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in the UAE as an example and noted that it was just to give a glimpse about the importance given to this technology in the UAE.

“We have lots of devices and communication systems for security of people that include AI. One example is intelligent buildings. In intelligent buildings, we are able to control and manage the shape of the people that come. You can recognise the people by face and even have data base about their behaviour. All this is managed by AI,” he explained.

He insisted that the world cannot actually escape this type of technology. “It will be everywhere and with as much as evolution of time it will be more or less present in almost all our devices in our daily lives.  We also have, for example, future autonomous cars where AI plays a prominent role in making intelligent decisions.”

Trust Factor
On Digital Security by Design (DSbD), he noted that it was something which could create a resilient future and help businesses and people, making them safer in a way that we could trust them. “It is important to trust and have confidence in what we are doing. That’s what makes it resilient.”

Talking about Provable Security, he said one cannot say something is secure 100 per cent. “We say 99.99. It is because of evolution of technology. We have to accept that it is an on-going process. We have to put all our knowledge and best on it.”

The AIDRC Telecom Director stated that Terahertz (THz) communications is recognised as a promising technology for 6G. “Terahertz could be good from security point of view. Some people in reputed universities are looking at very interesting systems focussing on security. The idea is to solve the problems. We have to look at the problems as we cannot say something is completely secure. This is why we always talk about 99.99 per cent. This is part of the game. It’s because things evolve. The malware evolves, techniques evolve.”

Asked whether enough steps were being taken to tackle the issue of privacy in the 6G vision, Dr. Faouzi-Bader said it sounded strange that people talk about future technology privacy, but every day give their own details to Facebook. “Yes, privacy is something important and we should protect everyone’s privacy.

This is something we have to take care; we have to learn lessons from the past, with our experience in social media. For example, Instagram is taking steps to protect minors. We have to take care of what we give as free data. There is a need for educating people about the importance of this,” he elaborated .
