Twin Otter to Get Sharp Eyes with Airborne Tech

Airborne Technologies and Smith Myers have announced a new integration contract to equip a De Havilland Twin Otter aircraft with a comprehensive sensor suite and two advanced Airborne LINX workstations. The collaboration aims to bolster the capabilities of a European law enforcement agency, ensuring latest technology in its airborne operations.

The aircraft will feature two dual-screen operator workstations, an observer station, and an Airborne LINX Mission Management Unit, ensuring unparalleled functionality and efficiency.
Wolfgang Grumeth, CEO of Airborne Technologies, said: “We look forward to working again with Smith Myers and delivering a modern and leading-edge equipped surveillance aircraft, that is perfectly tailored to the customer´s needs.”

Enhanced Surveillance Suite
In addition to the Smith Myers Artemis+ system, the comprehensive Airborne LINX surveillance suite integrated into the aircraft will include several advanced components.

These components are the Forward Looking Infrared Star Stabilised Airborne Forward Looking Infrared Electro-Optical Infrared (Flir Star SAFIRE EOIR) system, which provides superior imaging capabilities, the Imaging Synthetic Aperture Radar (IMSAR) system for enhanced detection and mapping, and the Enhanced Communications Systems (ECS) downlink for real-time data transmission.

The suite also features the Shotover moving map for precise navigation, the Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing (AEM) mission digital audio system for clear communication, and a sophisticated radio communication suite, ensuring seamless coordination and operational efficiency.

“This is not our first integration with partners at Airborne Technologies. But this will be the first for our newly released Artemis+, marking another significant milestone of success with our friends at Airborne Technologies,” pointed out Andrew Munro, Managing Director, Smith Myers.

This contract, announced at Farnborough International Airshow, will see deliveries starting in 2025.

Customised ISR Integration
Airborne Technologies combines aviation and system engineering expertise to provide innovative, customised solutions for governments, police, military, and various industries. Its services include integrating airborne remote sensors and developing customised Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) turnkey solutions.

Founded in 1987, Smith Myers Communications Ltd specialises in designing and manufacturing mobile phone location systems for search and rescue (SAR). Its innovation, Artemis, enables airborne platforms to turn any mobile phone into a location beacon, dramatically reducing search times. It has received numerous awards, including the King’s Award for Enterprise Innovation 2024 and the Royal Aeronautical Society Silver Medal.

Artemis identifies and locates mobile phones in SAR operations without a cellular network, detecting handsets up to 35 km away. It offers mass-mapping, geofencing, and operates independently using cellular protocols.
