Falco Xplorer The Unblinking Eye of Digital ISR

In the dynamic aerospace and defence sector, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) are undergoing a profound evolution, characterised by continuous development and an impressive ability to adapt to new operational demands. Leonardo’s Falco family stands as a prime example of this transformative journey, showcasing how innovation drives progress in unmanned aerial capabilities.
The evolution of UAS mirrors broader trends in aerospace and defence, beginning with initial models designed around prevailing technologies and specific operational requirements. These systems are then progressively refined to address emerging needs and integrate cutting-edge advancements.

The Falco family originated from an initial model, the Falco XN. This platform underwent significant development, leading to the intermediate Falco EVO, which saw extensive operational deployment in various missions. The latest iteration is the sophisticated Falco Xplorer, a distinctly different system that first took flight in 2020.

Falco Family: A Heritage of Technical Excellence
The Falco family traces its roots to Leonardo’s Mirach 20 and Mirach 26 drones, developed in the 1970s and 1980s. The initial Falco, derived from the Mirach 26, introduced a modern engine, a ground control station, and conventional runway operations with landing gear.
It featured a 10-inch electro-optical sensor, a maximum take-off weight of 450 kilogrammes, 10 hours of flight endurance, and a 200-kilometre operational range using line-of-sight radio communication. This early platform set the stage for a continuous cycle of technological upgrades, leveraging miniaturised electronics and dual-use components to enhance performance while managing obsolescence.

FALCO Xplorer: Strategic Surveillance
The FALCO Xplorer Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) represents Leonardo’s cutting-edge solution for persistent multisensory strategic surveillance. This system is meticulously engineered to provide customers with continuous and actionable Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, crucial for modern operational environments. Its design focuses on delivering sustained information superiority through advanced sensor integration and robust data handling.

A significant advantage is its substantial payload capacity, which enables the installation of a broad and versatile multispectral sensor suite. This suite is natively composed of a multifunction Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), providing advanced ground mapping and moving target indication capabilities, essential for detecting subtle changes in terrain or tracking moving objects in all weather conditions.

It includes an electro-optical multisensor gyrostabilised turret, offering high-resolution visual, infrared, and laser ranging functionalities, ensuring detailed imagery and precise targeting information day and night. A comprehensive Signal Intelligence Suite is integrated, allowing for the passive detection, interception, and analysis of electronic emissions, providing critical insights into adversary activities. This advanced integration provides customers with unparalleled and customisable situational awareness, vital for comprehensive intelligence gathering across diverse operational theatres.

Impressive Endurance
Powered by a conventional aviation engine, the Falco Xplorer boasts an impressive endurance exceeding 24 hours, allowing for extended missions that reduce the need for frequent rotations and enhance operational efficiency. It gathers critical information far beyond the visual horizon, relaying it in real-time via a secure satellite connection to Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) centres. This beyond-line-of-sight capability ensures global reach and immediate access to vital intelligence.

A typical system configuration for deployment includes a Ground Control Station (GCS) connected to a Ground Data Terminal (GDT), comprehensive Ground Support Equipment (GSE), and two aircraft, ensuring operational redundancy and flexibility for sustained missions.

The system’s design adheres strictly to NATO Standardisation Agreement (STANAG) 4671 standards, a testament to its robust military pedigree and interoperability with allied forces. It is currently undergoing military type certification, a complex process that rigorously validates its airworthiness, safety, and operational performance for military applications, ensuring it meets the highest defence industry benchmarks.

Building upon the proven legacy of the FALCO EVO and other major RPAS programmes, the Falco Xplorer system is specifically designed to meet dual-use requirements, making it versatile for both military and governmental applications.

It provides 24/7, all-weather persistent regional surveillance, covering an extensive array of missions. This capability seamlessly complements typical military roles, such as theatre persistent multispectral surveillance, with vital governmental missions including border patrolling, coastal watch, illegal immigration prevention, law enforcement, critical infrastructure surveillance, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance, and environmental monitoring, demonstrating its broad applicability across the security spectrum.

Air Segment: Flexible Configuration
The air segment of the FALCO Xplorer is engineered to deliver superior aerodynamic performance coupled with a highly flexible configuration, enabling it to accommodate a diverse range of sensors and payloads tailored to specific mission profiles. Its aerodynamic efficiency contributes to its extended endurance and operational altitude. To significantly relieve crew workload and enhance overall operational efficiency, the system incorporates advanced automation features. These include assisted and fully automatic flight management, encompassing automated take-off and landing procedures, which reduce the need for manual intervention and simplify operations from various terrains and challenging environments.

The system supports automatic area surveillance modes, allowing for pre-programmed reconnaissance patterns with real-time target data processing, dissemination, and exploitation. This automation ensures that critical information is captured and shared efficiently, reducing the time from data collection to actionable intelligence. The system’s modular architecture allows for easy adaptation to meet specific customer requirements and to seamlessly integrate bespoke payloads, ensuring mission versatility and future-proofing against evolving threats.

Key design considerations for the Xplorer include seamless airport and airspace operations integration, which is crucial for operating safely in diverse air traffic environments, and a reduced logistical footprint, simplifying deployment and sustainment. These attributes collectively contribute to delivering higher-tier performance at lower overall life cycle costs compared to other systems in its class, offering a compelling economic and operational advantage over its lifespan.

Ground Control Segment: Data Exploitation
The Ground Control Station (GCS) for the Xplorer provides a comprehensive and intuitive suite of tools essential for effective mission management. This includes sophisticated capabilities for mission planning and rehearsal, allowing operators to simulate and refine mission parameters before actual deployment, thereby optimising mission success rates. It also facilitates thorough pre-flight system checks, ensuring all components are operational and ready, mitigating risks before take-off.

During missions, the GCS enables dynamic flight plan re-tasking, allowing for real-time adjustments to respond to evolving intelligence or environmental conditions, maintaining mission relevance. Post-mission, it supports mission playback and simulation, which are invaluable for crew training, performance analysis, and post-mission debriefings.

The GCS ensures real-time command and control of the aircraft via a secure satellite data link, extending operational ranges far beyond conventional line-of-sight limitations. This global reach is critical for persistent surveillance over vast areas, enabling operations in remote or contested regions.

Typically, the surveillance flight plan is executed automatically along a preprogrammed route, encompassing both the take-off and landing phases, enhancing operational consistency and reducing operator fatigue. Operators, however, retain the crucial flexibility to perform manual override at any point during the flight, ensuring human control when necessary for critical decision-making or immediate response to unforeseen circumstances.

The Ground Control Station is also capable of off-line data evaluation and processing, enabling further diffusion of intelligence through the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence network in STANAG format, ensuring interoperability with allied systems.

Additionally, real-time data can be received by small frontline units via Remote Video Terminals (RVT), ensuring critical information reaches tactical decision-makers promptly and directly, enhancing battlefield awareness.
