Kaplan MT Power Packed Precision

In the landscape of the modern warfare, medium-weight tanks have emerged as an optimum balance of firepower, mobility, and protection. Medium-weight tanks have been characterised by their adaptability to operate within a wider spectrum of combat scenarios. Their mass enables improved manoeuvrability and deployability compared to main battle tanks, while providing enhanced protection and firepower compared to light armoured elements.
 
This resourcefulness enables military forces to respond rapidly to wider range of operational requirements. As a force multiplier, medium tanks are becoming invaluable assets in both conventional and unconventional operations.
 
Tank Versatility
Jointly developed by Turkey’s FNSS and Indonesia’s PT Pindad, the Kaplan MT / VBC CC is a medium-weight tank that provides strong combat capabilities.
 
At the heart of the Kaplan-MT is the John Cockerill Defence Cockerill 3105 turret, an advanced 105mm weapon system that enhances its combat potential. The turret provides a high degree of versatility, including the ability to elevate the main gun to +42 degrees, enabling indirect fire support capabilities similar to artillery systems. 
 
Additionally, the system integrates an operational anti-drone solution, addressing emerging threats from unmanned aerial systems. The use of standard 105mm ammunition, which is widely available on the international market, adds to the logistical convenience and operational appeal of the platform.
 
On a separate note, the Kaplan Tracked Armoured Fighting Vehicle / VBC Fuz (Viaturas Blindadas de Combate de Fuzileiros) is equipped with the Cockerill 3030 unmanned turret. This 30mm system provides increased situational awareness and lethality while reducing crew exposure, thanks to its remote operation. The unmanned configuration enhances survivability and mission flexibility, making it suitable for a wide range of battlefield roles, including infantry support and reconnaissance missions.
 
Power-to-Weight Ratio
Its domestically engineered design stands out in its category due to its exceptionally low profile and superior power-to-weight ratio, optimising the vehicle for both weight efficiency and dynamic motion. 
 
The advanced platform integrates a state-of-the-art power pack, which is complemented by sophisticated electronic control systems, an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), and a robust, heavy-duty suspension system. Together, these technologies ensure that the tank delivers consistent and dependable power, supporting both day and night operational capabilities during extended expeditionary missions on the battlefield.
 
The rear powerpack and innovative motion system enhance operator ergonomics, equipment durability, and rapid acceleration on challenging terrains.
Unlike other front-engine tanks, which are often adaptations from personnel carriers or Armoured Combat Vehicles (ACVs), the Kaplan MT’s engineering avoids the limitations inherent in such conversions. The indigenous design ensures that the tank does not merely adapt existing technologies but redefines operational capabilities through targeted innovations, setting a new standard in armoured warfare technology.
 
Currently operational within the Indonesian Army, the Kaplan MT stands as Turkey’s sole export in the Combat Tank Class, underscoring its unique position in global armoured warfare technology.
 
Innovative Tactical Systems
The vehicle has a combat weight of 30,000 kg, which reflects its robust yet optimised design, balancing protection, firepower, and mobility to ensure effectiveness on the battlefield without sacrificing agility. Its power-to-weight ratio exceeds 22 horsepower per tonne, a testament to its advanced engineering, which delivers exceptional acceleration and manoeuvrability, particularly on challenging terrains, by maximising the efficiency of its state-of-the-art power pack and electronic control systems. 
 
The tank is operated by a crew of three, consisting of a driver, a gunner, and a commander, each playing a critical role in its operation: the driver manages the vehicle’s movement with enhanced situational awareness provided by advanced optical systems and digital dashboards, the gunner handles the targeting and firing of the high-pressure 105 mm gun using precision sighting technology, and the commander oversees tactical decisions and coordinates with other units via integrated communication and battlefield management systems, ensuring seamless and effective combat operations.
 
Dynamic Lethality Engineering
The Kaplan MT is equipped with a main armament featuring the John Cockerill 3105 105 mm gun, a high-pressure cannon renowned for its precision and lethality, designed to deliver substantial firepower against a wide range of battlefield threats with exceptional speed and accuracy. This main armament is compatible with all NATO-standard 105 mm tank ammunition, ensuring versatility and logistical flexibility by allowing the use of a broad spectrum of munitions tailored to specific mission requirements. 
 
The tank’s autoloader is fully automatic, boasting a 12 ready-rounds capacity, which enhances operational efficiency by reducing crew workload and enabling rapid successive engagements, a critical advantage in dynamic combat scenarios. For secondary armament, the Kaplan MT includes a coaxial machine gun, available in either 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm configurations, providing additional suppressive fire capabilities against soft targets and infantry. Optionally, the tank can be fitted with a roof-mounted Remote Weapon Station (RWS) or a pintle-mounted machine gun, further expanding its engagement options and adaptability to various threat environments. 
 
The gun’s elevation range, from -10 degrees to +42 degrees, allows for versatile targeting, including low-angle engagements for close-in defence and high-angle indirect fire for engaging targets in complex urban terrains or elevated positions. The fire control system is fully digital and stabilised, enabling accurate fire-on-the-move capabilities, hunter-killer functionality, and day-and-night operation, all of which contribute to a high first-round hit probability, ensuring it can effectively engage and neutralise threats with minimal delay, even under challenging conditions.
 
Agile Terrain Dominance
The vehicle’s mobility is driven by a robust diesel engine, selected for its reliability and efficiency, providing the power necessary to navigate diverse and demanding terrains while maintaining fuel economy for extended operations. Its transmission is fully automatic, featuring four forward gears and two reverse gears, which ensures smooth and responsive gear shifts, enhancing driver control and vehicle agility during high-speed manoeuvres or rapid retreats. 
 
The powerpack is strategically located at the rear of the vehicle, a design choice that optimises weight distribution, improves acceleration—especially on soft soil and rough terrain—and contributes to the tank’s low silhouette, reducing its visibility to enemies. The tank achieves a maximum road speed of 70 km/h, allowing for swift repositioning and tactical flexibility on the battlefield, while its operational range of 450 km ensures sustained missions without frequent refuelling. 
 
The tank can tackle steep gradients of up to 60 per cent and side slopes of 30 per cent, demonstrating its exceptional climbing and stability capabilities on uneven terrain. It is capable of crossing vertical obstacles up to 0.9 metres and trenches up to 2.2 metres wide, showcasing its strength in overcoming natural and man-made barriers. 
 
It features a pivot turning radius, enabling tight, on-the-spot rotations that enhance manoeuvrability in confined spaces or during urban combat. Its track system, available in either double or single pin configurations, provides durability and traction, tailored to specific mission profiles. The tank can ford water obstacles up to 1.2 metres deep without preparation, adding to its operational flexibility in riverine or rainy environments. 
 
The torsion bar suspension system absorbs shocks and maintains stability, ensuring smooth travel over rough terrain and protecting both the vehicle and crew from the jarring effects of high-speed movement across obstacles.
 
Ballistic Protection
The Kaplan MT offers ballistic protection certified to STANAG 4569 at a classified level, with a modular add-on armour design for enhanced defence, and mine protection also meeting STANAG 4569 standards. An optional active protection system counters anti-tank threats, while optional laser warning and gunshot detection systems improve threat awareness. It includes eight smoke grenade dischargers for concealment, a standard automatic fire suppression system for safety, a standard CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) protection system for hazardous environments, and standard air conditioning and heating for crew comfort.
 
Mission Equipment
The tank is equipped with advanced mission equipment that enhances its operational effectiveness through a suite of sophisticated vision systems, including independent sights for both the commander and gunner, supplemented by direct-view periscopes, which provide comprehensive situational awareness and allow for precise target acquisition and engagement from multiple perspectives, even in challenging conditions. 
 
Additionally, the gunner is supported by an emergency direct-view sight, ensuring continued targeting capability in the event of primary system failure, increasing reliability during critical combat situations. The driver benefits from a standard vision system that integrates day and thermal cameras along with wide-angle optical periscopes, enabling safe and effective navigation without the need to expose the crew. 
 
The tank’s Battle Management Systems (BMS) are standard, offering real-time tactical data and connectivity with allied forces, which facilitates coordinated operations and enhances decision-making on the battlefield. A standard navigation system, integrated into the vehicle’s digital architecture, provides accurate positioning and route planning, crucial for operations in unfamiliar or hostile territories.

Communication equipment includes UHF/VHF radios, ensuring secure and jam-resistant communication with other units over long distances, while a wireless crew intercommunication system allows seamless coordination among the driver, gunner, and commander within the tank, improving crew efficiency and response times. 
 
The APU is standard, supplying continuous power to all electronic systems when the main engine is off, extending operational endurance, reducing fuel consumption, and supporting stealth operations by minimising engine noise and thermal signatures.
 
The Kaplan MT’s development by Turkey and Indonesia underscores the benefits of international defence collaboration and reflects a growing trend towards versatile armoured vehicles capable of addressing contemporary and future battlefield challenges.​
