DSEI on an Upward Trend as Exhibition Enters its 20th Year

Now encompassing the entire defence and security audience, including Air, Land, Naval and Security, DSEI is a biennial event taking place in the London ExCeL centre from 10th-13th September. With a focus on Emerging Technologies, Cross-Sector Exploitation and International Collaboration, the next edition of Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) will mark 20 years since the event was first established as ‘the British Army and Navy exhibition’.

Supported by the UK Ministry of Defence and Department for International Trade and platinum partners General Dynamics and BAE Systems, DSEI has grown in both size and content to reflect the complex nature of modern warfare and security. As the premier event for the global defence and security sector, DSEI showcases the latest equipment, transmitting knowledge from the most senior military leaders and providing networking opportunities with key commercial and economic stakeholders.

Focus on Emerging Technologies
The defence industry has evolved considerably since 1999 with industry priorities changing significantly after 11 September 2001 to encompass the intensifying threat from the “digital battlefield”. Wide-ranging cuts to defence spending and expansion of technological know-how over the period have shaped and reshaped the manner in which the industry does business. Visitors to DSEI 2019 can also expect significant focus on Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, Robotics and Big Data as themes running throughout the exhibition and conference programme.

This year’s DSEI will continue to promote the global supply chain via dedicating new feature areas on the exhibition floor. These specialised ‘hubs’ will showcase cross-sector suppliers within the Manufacturing, Innovation, Communications, Cyber, Space & Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul and Upgrade domains.

The world’s leading multi-technology tier 1 aerospace supplier, GKN Aerospace, will feature for the first time alongside Pela Systems, which manufactures products including the PelaCopter – an unmanned system flown into hazardous situations to provide real-time data to aid decision-making in the field. Pela also specialises in emergency communications, threat monitoring, and surveillance systems.

Exhibitors and Visitors
DSEI 2019 will see Latvia and Lithuania host national pavilions for the first time to demonstrate their countries’ defence and security ingenuity. Of the 30 country pavilions confirmed to date, the United Arab Emirates, Czech Republic, Holland, Denmark, Slovakia and Australia have significantly larger areas, reflecting the rise in exportable expertise from these regions and a desire to develop international partnerships.
DSEI 2019 will welcome over 1,600 exhibitors from 69 countries and more than 300 speakers, providing a key opportunity for over 35,000 attendees to hear high-level and relevant insights from international specialists and see the newest and most pioneering products and innovations from across the full spectrum of global defence and security.

Many products, now globally renowned, were first introduced to the market at DSEI. The LifeSaver water bottle which debuted its pioneering water-purifying drinking vessel to the world at DSEI in 2007 was named DSEI’s “Best Technological Development” and the entire stock sold out within four hours of the presentation. Having first caught the attention of the British Army, the Lifesaver water bottle is now used globally by militaries, humanitarian teams and outdoor enthusiasts.

While supporting both prime contractors and small and medium-sized enterprises, DSEI gives UK exports a significant boost because, on a rolling 10-year basis, the UK remains the second largest global defence exporter. In 2017, it won defence and security orders worth £9 billion and £4.8 billion respectively, up on the previous year (£5.9 billion and £4.3 billion).

Previous DSEI events have included a 95 per cent visitor satisfaction rate, with 94 per cent of visitors saying DSEI is important for their business and 81 per cent classing it as a “must-attend” industry event. Providing a broad and unparalleled range of high and low-level networking opportunities, DSEI includes a variety of receptions, hospitality packages and “Meet the Supply Chain” events.

“This is a very special year for DSEI, not just because it’s bigger than ever, but because this is also the 20th anniversary since the first DSEI back in 1999”, says Harriett Baldwin MP, Former Minister for Defence Procurement reflecting the support of the UK’s Ministry of Defence. “The MoD and the Department for International Trade have been proud to support it ever since then, because it is about making sure our armed forces get the equipment that they need to keep our country safe.”

General Sir Nicholas Carter KCB CBE DSO ADC, Gen. Chief of the Defence Staff adds that, “I much look forward to DSEI. We intend to build on the very positive experience as we construct the partnerships we need to deal with the complexity of the future operating environment.”

Colin Paynter, Managing Director Airbus Defence and Space UK, says: “We’re delighted to be returning to DSEI for the first time since 2015. The Space Hub will be the perfect showcase for our Skynet military satellite communications and Earth observation capabilities. We’re looking forward to demonstrating some of the sovereign technologies that sit at the heart of the UK’s world-leading space sector.”

The Space Hub will be an incredible opportunity for the industry, the MOD, visitors and international delegates to discuss the next-generation capabilities critical issues and challenges as space has, without doubt, become a vital part of the defence industry with significant reliance on satellites to provide the data needed for military operations. With engagement from prime defence suppliers and SMEs to provide LEO satellite data and analytics, the Space Hub will create a forum to discuss how geospatial data is impacting real-time decision-making and intelligent tactical positioning.

The full spectrum of defence and security companies with strategic space capabilities are present at DSEI 2019, including BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. DSEI’s comprehensive conference programme will also dedicate a day in the Aerospace Seminar, featuring Airbus and other exhibitors like world-leading satellite operators GovSat, RF and micro-wave technology expert Arralis, and Ka-band communications specialist Avanti.

Paul Wells, Vice-President & Chief Commercial Officer at GovSat, says: “After a successful launch and great operational first year, GovSat is developing at a rapid pace. The Space Hub at DSEI 2019 is a great opportunity for the company to showcase its MilSatCom capabilities and services to governmental and institutional users.”

Naval Zone: Once the British Army and Navy Exhibition, DSEI has unrivalled naval heritage and in 2017, the London dock showcased a range of ships including a Type 23 ‘Duke’ Class frigate (HMS Argyll), Belgian Navy Ops Vessel (BNS Pollux) and Irish Naval Service Offshore Patrol Vessel (Le Samuel Beckett). In showcasing the most cutting-edge maritime technology, the modern exhibition includes the traditional array of warships visiting DSEI, providing the DSEI audience with a first-hand view of the remarkable vessels in operation with different international navies.

The Naval Zone at DSEI is an interactive showcase of the latest vessels and technology for buyers, procurement managers and R&D looking to penetrate the naval market. DSEI’s distinctive dockside setting is fully supported by the Royal Navy and First Sea Lord, providing visitors with unrivalled networking opportunities, insights from key decision-makers and the opportunity to see the industry’s latest vessels in action through interactive presentations and waterborne demonstrations that make up a dazzling showcase of maritime capabilities and international warships.

DSEI delegates have access to Strategic Conferences through which they can hear first-hand from senior military, government and industry figures as they discuss key contemporary defence and security topics in their fields.

Day Zero on Monday 09 September will see the Aerospace, Land and Maritime Capability Conferences, in which leading representatives from each field will discuss the challenges and threats faced by modern military operations and how the armed forces are adapting to face new issues rapidly and effectively. Tuesday 10 September offers the Medical Innovation conference “Enhancing resilience”, Wednesday 11 September sees a conference on “The Future of Military Rotorcraft” and Friday 12 September features the launch of a Defence Engineering Skills Conference in partnership with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and MoD.

DSEI 2019 will also deliver a thought-provoking seminar programme, with domain-focused sessions taking place in theatres on the exhibition floor. These seminars will focus on Aerospace, Land, Naval, Security and Joint to reflect the designated zones, delivering exceptional insights and thought leadership from senior experts and VIPs.

Grant Burgham, DSEI Event Director says that, “DSEI is a milestone in the defence calendar. While, in many ways, DSEI is unrecognisable from its beginnings in Chertsey, it has consistently delivered a platform for industry to engage with the defence and security community. What time has taught us is that this is founded on key partnerships and we value the partners that have been with us on this journey, while fostering new alliances and connections with other cross-sector organisations.”

To mark its twentieth anniversary, the organisers of DSEI have also launched a podcast series titled “Defence and Security Debates”. The series includes four ‘round table’ panel discussions with leading voices from the UK defence and security community, including senior military, government officials, Defence Ministers, Members of Parliament and industry figureheads from DSEI’s core exhibitor base.

The defence and security debates focus on four core themes: Defence Procurement, Cross Sector Exploitation, People and Skills, and Future Defence Capability. Led by DSEI Chairman, Rear Adm. Simon Williams, each episode will give the panel the opportunity to examine how these areas have developed in the two decades since DSEI was established, exploring both current challenges and opportunities.
