Building the Future of Electronic Warfare

As Electronic Warfare and Intelligence (EW&I) systems emerge as essential elements of the modern battlefield, SIGN4L pioneers advanced technologies to secure the electromagnetic spectrum and develops disruptive solutions to outpace adversaries.
In an interview, Waleid Al Mesmari, Vice President of Program Management, EW&I, EDGE, sheds light on the company’s participation at Dubai Airshow 2021 and its intelligence capabilities. Excerpts:

SIGN4L is marking its second anniversary this November. What have been the major achievements over the past two years, and what are the immediate future plans?
SIGN4L celebrates its second anniversary, marking two years as the country’s flagship leader in developing EW&I solutions. With a focus on accelerating the country’s electronic warfare (EW) and homeland security capabilities, we are focused on developing solutions for defence forces, government, homeland security organisations and private security companies.
Among its key achievements, SIGN4L launched its first four solutions. These include V-Protect, a radio-frequency communication jamming system, and NavControl-G, a sophisticated spoofing system, unveiled earlier this year. The company has also been building relationships with leading global technology providers and start-ups alike.

The future roadmap outlines a dedicated plan for a state-of-the-art counter-UAS solution that meets the needs of the region, directed energy systems, as well as a wide range of intelligence solutions. Set to leverage the benefits of autonomous capabilities, such as AI and deep learning, and cyber-EW technology, SIGN4L aims to develop modular, adaptive, and cognitive systems that meet the future operational requirements of its trusted clients.

What kinds of services and capabilities is SIGN4L planning to showcase during its participation at Dubai Airshow 2021?
We are very excited to be participating at the Dubai Airshow this year with EDGE Group as the Defence Technology Partner. We will be showcasing the major strides SIGN4L is making in the research, development, and production of cutting-edge products and capabilities across the fields of electronic warfare and intelligence.

One of our core focuses this year has been testing and developing an end-to-end, integrated, and robust C-UAS solution. The systems we are developing have been tested across multiple threat landscapes, and we are pleased to report that they performed very well. We look forward to announcing our developments in this area at the Dubai Airshow this year.

How effective has NavControl-G been in preventing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from trespassing into specific locations?
NavControl-G has been developed to safeguard assets and sensitive areas from rogue UAVs. Aimed at ensuring the system meets the diverse operational and environmental needs of the UAE, it has undergone a series of tests since it was launched.
During the trials, NavControl-G demonstrated its ability to manipulate weaknesses in all GNSS protocols, as well as execute sophisticated and automated detection and mitigation strategies that stop, redirect, land or take control of drones across a range of scenarios. The system effectively neutralised the threat and secured the intended area of interest at a broad dynamic range.

Built to meet the specific environmental requirements of the region, SIGN4L’s system performs optimally in hot, humid, and dusty weather.

SIGN4L had earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MBDA Missile Systems, CILAS, the French subsidiary of Ariane Group, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). How have these partnerships helped so far?
The MoU signed with MBDA enables SIGN4L to tailor an end-to-end C-UAS solution against hostile UAVs. The end product is a modular system that will comprise electronic sensors for detection and identification and high-energy lasers to neutralise micro- and mini-UAV threats.
The cooperation spans diverse phases, enabling the UAE to benefit from the international expertise of MBDA and CILAS. We are witnessing a technology breakthrough and are excited to continue working with our partners to bring our shared project to fruition.

Our collaboration with IAI follows an extensive and detailed roadmap. Key components of the C-UAV system have been tested throughout the year, and we are looking to complete work on the integrated solution this year.
As a result of our partnerships with leading global technology providers, we can ensure that our clients can access and deploy the most advanced technologies and solutions in the market.

Could you please shed some light on SIGN4L’s EW and intelligence capabilities? What are the best ways to leverage the latest EW trends?
SIGN4L supplies field-proven technology to support all types of law enforcement and government activities. Our advanced and integrated intelligence systems provide the highest level of protection, situational awareness, and information superiority in an increasingly complex environment to reinforce the security of the community and personnel.

SIGN4L’s offerings include active and passive lawful interception solutions that feature data collection, monitoring and analysis capabilities for fixed and mobile devices, as well as advanced jammer systems to protect against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and hostile drones.

How did SIGN4L overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic?
Despite the COVID-19 crisis that emerged after the first four months of business, SIGN4L has shown unwavering commitment and resilience in supporting its customers and the country in this vital sector – the national security space.

The COVID-19 pandemic compelled us to adapt to a new reality and alter the way we work and operate. At SIGN4L, we thrive on change and seek to develop agile, bold, and disruptive solutions to overcome the challenges of the future. Across EDGE Group, we have been proactive – leveraging our advanced technology capabilities to ensure that our employees have the means to perform their duties safely and efficiently while maintaining business continuity and upholding national security measures as best as possible.
