HENSOLDT: Pioneers in Precision

One of the world’s leaders in technology and innovation in the area of defence and security electronics, HENSOLDT has established itself as a market leader in civilian and military sensor solutions, developing new products to counter evolving threats based on disruptive concepts in such fields as big data, robotics and cyber security. Thomas Müller, CEO, HENSOLDT, discusses the latest technology trends transforming the defence industry as well the company’s plans in an exclusive interview with Nation Shield. Excerpts:

The brand name HENSOLDT is rather new at IDEX. Can you explain the background of this “newcomer” to our readers?
First of all: HENSOLDT has been formed only two years ago, but it is no “newcomer” at all! In fact, HENSOLDT represents more than 100 years of German technology excellence and it is present in the region with several predecessor organisations since decades. HENSOLDT comprises the security and defence electronics activities of the Airbus Group, which were spun off in 2017. Today, HENSOLDT is a platform-independent, globally leading supplier of sensor solutions for security and surveillance missions.

What are the core competences of your company?
Without going into too much detail, our core competences are basically the key technologies for intelligence and reconnaissance. We are specialists in radar, optronics, electronic warfare and avionics. In other words, the technologies to exploit the electro-magnetic spectrum to establish a comprehensive situation picture and to deny this use to hostile forces.

In your field of sensor technology, what are the most important future trends?
We see a trend in military systems which we all know from the commercial area: The trend to systems hardened against cyber-attack, the use of machine learning technologies and the exploitation of big data. We are deeply involved in those activities, which enable us to offer our customer complete solutions to control the electromagnetic spectrum. Furthermore, sensor fusion is a clear trend, combining different frequency bands and devices. In sum, the general trend goes towards smart, self-learning solutions, which give our customers information superiority.

Where do you see the most promising growth opportunities for your company, geographically as well as in terms of applications?
First, HENSOLDT’s activities are not restricted to a certain region. We are a globally active company, even if we see specific opportunities in the MENA and APAC regions. Second, the field of application of our products is continuously widening.

Capabilities for information superiority and electronic protection are a necessity for military and security forces and even “civil” organisations like industries or infrastructure operators. That means the basis for our ambitious growth plans is the continuous widening of our scope from our defence core business to security solutions and to what we call “adjacent markets”, i.e. commercial markets, which are accessible by making use of our specific skills.

In this way, HENSOLDT will double its revenues in the next five years.
