2.932B AED Deals, Record Turnout Seal UMEX & SimTEX 2024 Triumph

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and inaugurated by His Highness Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the sixth and largest edition of the UMEX and SimTEX exhibitions concluded recently, leaving a trail of impressive achievements.

 
The opening day witnessed the presence of distinguished personalities, including H. E. Mohammad Mubarak Fadhel Al-Mazrouei, Minister of State for Defence Affairs, H. E. Matar Salem Al Dhaheri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defence, Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior and Major General Mubarak Saeed Ghafan Al Jabri, Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee. 
 
His Highness Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed conducted an extensive tour of the exhibition pavilions, during which he was briefed on the most prominent unmanned systems, simulation and training. 
 
His Highness visited several national pavilions, such as the “Coding Challenge Competition” pavilion of the Ministry of Defence, the International Gold Group (IGG) pavilion, the Callous, and the Edge group pavilion, in addition to a visit to the Spanish SDLE NexGen pavilion.
 
Organised by ADNEC Group and the Ministry of Defence, with EDGE Group as a strategic partner, UMEX and SimTEX took place from January 23-25 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in Abu Dhabi.
 
Global Reach
The exhibition hosted 214 companies, a 19 per cent increase from the previous session, with 35 countries, including 11 newcomers such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Singapore, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Taiwan, Estonia, the Virgin Islands, and the Czech Republic.
 
UMEX and SimTEX drive local innovation and business development with 72 local companies, constituting about 34 per cent of total participants. The current session’s exhibition area expanded by 15 per cent, surpassing 30,000 square metres.
 
As the largest UMEX and SimTEX to date since the launch of the event in 2015, the exhibitions achieved record numbers and drew wide international praise.

An impressive turnout of 27,356 visitors represented a remarkable 97 per cent increase compared to the previous edition. The successes extended beyond attendance with a significant 45 per cent increase in deals agreed upon, totalling an impressive overall value of AED 2.932 billion compared to AED 2 billion in 2022. 
 
Major General Dr Mubarak Saeed Ghafan Al Jabri, Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee for UMEX and SimTEX 2024 and the accompanying conference, said: “The vital role that unmanned systems and associated technologies played in supporting business growth and the development of civil applications within national economies was highlighted.”
 
New Features
This edition saw the launch of five new features: the MoD Coding Competition, UMEX Commercial, live demonstrations taking place at the ADNEC Grandstand and Water Canal, UMEX Talks, and the UMEX Next_Gen innovation competition. 
 
This year at the UAE pavilion, the largest at exhibitions covering over 5,200 square metres, Emirati companies competed well against international counterparts, with many new products and systems shining a light on the UAE’s technological potential. 
 
EDGE Group, the strategic partner for UMEX and SimTEX, was extensively involved at this year’s event with three product launches, including the M-BUGGY, a self-driving, wheeled ground vehicle for multiple geographical uses.
 
Coding Competition
The MoD Coding Competition, a collaboration between UMEX, SimTEX, ADNEC Group, and the Ministry of Defence, engaged 178 Emirati programmers in a three-day challenge.

The competition featured two tracks, providing participants with hands-on experience and interaction with industry experts. Winners of track one received valuable prizes, while track two focused on the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Programming Challenge, with Salwa Omar Abdullah Albaraki claiming first place, followed by Khadijah Rashed Mohammad Alsaradi and Issa Hamad Salem.
 
UMEX NEXT_GEN 2024 featured 20+ startups from seven countries. UAE-based AR Engineering, specialising in augmented reality and digital twins, emerged as the leading startup and won the UMEX Next_Gen Pitch competition. Their digital twin solutions find applications in simulation, integration, testing, monitoring, and maintenance.
 
UMEX Talks highlighted smart city infrastructure, autonomous vehicles, and advanced AI in autonomous systems. 
Giulio Segurini, CEO, Partner at STRADAai, discussed ‘The journey to Smart Cities,’ emphasising the potential of AI for safe operation of autonomous systems. STRADAai is innovating drone aerospace management through Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) systems, offering significant business opportunities for key stakeholders.
 
Local Focus Drives Deals
Over the three days, significant deals were secured, totaling AED 3.891 billion. Day 1 featured AED 899 million in local contracts, including anti-drone guns and UAV systems. International contracts amounted to AED 72 million, covering simulators and anti-drone systems. 
 
Day 2 witnessed five contracts, totalling AED 939 million, including EDGE’s AED 708 million deal for anti-drone guns. 
 
Day 3 marked eight contracts worth AED 1.022 billion, with highlights like an AED 509 million deal with EDGE for defence systems. Other contracts involved training simulators, communication services, artificial intelligence programming, underwater sonar systems, and communication subscriptions.
 
At the press conference conclusion, Majed Ahmed Al Jaberi, the official spokesperson of Tawazun Council, reiterated the Council’s commitment to boosting defence industries through global best practices in acquisition, procurement, and strategic partnerships. These efforts align with the UAE’s vision for business development, empowering industries, and leading innovations in the defence sector. 
 
He affirmed the Council’s commitment to fostering collaboration among defence industry players, locally and globally, to keep pace with rapid technological developments.
 
Live Demonstrations
UMEX and SimTEX 2024 introduced live demonstration shows, showcasing land and sea displays alongside traditional aerial and grounded unmanned systems exhibits. This innovation provided a dynamic platform for AI, robotics, and unmanned systems, offering a real-time experience of their capabilities. 
 
On day one, leading manufacturers presented unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), with EDGE showcasing Nimr ARV and M-Buggy. Al Marakeb Technologies’ AGEMA demonstrated amphibious capabilities, while other products like MILOSH V2, ROVER M2, and TAF35 were showcased. Unmanned Maritime Systems demos included Al Fattan’s 10-metre boat, UAE MoD’s AL SHERAA sailboat, and Al Seer Marine’s 20-metre boat, YARYOOR. 
 
Emirati Innovation
The exhibition featured significant product launches from Emirati entities. Among 214 companies, 72 Emirati firms showcased innovations, representing 34 per cent of exhibitors. 
 
EDGE Group introduced groundbreaking products like GY300, a low-maintenance drone with a 300kg capacity, and Bunker Pro, a high-performance unmanned ground vehicle. 
 
Khalifa University unveiled 13 advanced technology innovations, including firefighting drones and self-driving cars. 
 
Eneron presented the trial version of its electric Magnus reconnaissance vehicle, emphasising autonomy and sustainable technologies. 
The Emirates Defence Companies Council reinforced its role in supporting the UAE’s defence industry. 
 
Al Seer Marine
Al Seer Marine, a global leader in marine services, specialises in yachting, commercial shipping, boat building, 3D printing, unmanned vessel platforms, and technological innovations. To meet the growing demand for autonomous systems, the company has a dedicated research and development centre for the maritime unmanned systems market.
 
ASPIRE
ASPIRE, the technology programme management pillar of the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), was launched to drive the creation of future transformative technologies. The company collaborates with cross-sector industry stakeholders, universities, and research institutes to frame problem statements. 
 
Microavia FZE
Founded in 2022 in Dubai, Microavia delivers drone solutions for security, monitoring, mining, and surveying. All processes, from assembly to software programming, are done in-house at their Dubai Silicon Oasis facilities. The product range includes drone-in-a-box, autonomous multirotor platforms, payloads, fleet management software, and positioning systems. 
 
SAAL.ai
SAAL, a UAE-based applied AI company, specialises in solving defence problems using Arabic AI, Big Data, Analytics and Large Language Models. With products like DigiXT for accurate predictions and Intalact for defence competency management, SAAL is a regional AI leader. Proudly ‘made-in-UAE,’ these systems align with the UAE military’s needs, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to military protocols.
 
Smart Eye Tech 
The company presents AI-powered systems designed to detect potential threats in X-ray baggage scans. Its software solution is capable of identifying various threat categories even in challenging concealment conditions. These systems provide assistive technology to support screening procedures across different sectors, including aviation and event management security services.
 
Kintsugi Holding
Kintsugi leads in technology and innovation, integrating Autonomous and AI tech into unmanned systems and robotics. Mission: forge effective solutions for regional challenges. Believing in Autonomy, AI, and Sustainable tech, Kintsugi aims to equip clients for evolving mission requirements. 
 
Ahmed Almazrouei Innovation Centre 
AM Industries was established under the leadership of Ahmed Saeed Sulaiman Al Mazroei, the recipient of many local and regional awards for his inventions. The company was founded to develop novel concepts and scale up the ideas into commercial production. The company’s Research and Development wing develops prototypes for defence applications as well as safety systems for the police.
 
International Golden Group
Established in 2002, Abu Dhabi-based International Golden Group (IGG) specialises in high-end defence solutions. Recognised for excellence, IGG collaborates locally and globally, prioritizing complex system integrations, assembly, and manufacturing. IGG actively seeks advanced technologies to meet international standards and fulfill customer requirements.
 
Falcon Eye
The company is a leading professional drone operator and provider in the Middle East. It is one of the first businesses in the region to provide commercial drone services. Combining drone technology, data technology and digital transformation, it aims to provide businesses with safer, faster, and cost-effective solutions to improve business decisions and strategic planning.
 
FLEXICAM
FlexiCAM has many years of experience in CNC automation and integration. The company offers 3, 4 and 5 Axis CNC Routing solutions for a wide range of industries, focusing on aerospace, aluminium and façade fabrication, plastics and part manufacturing, etc.  FlexiCAM’s Piranha 5-Axis CNC machining centre is specifically designed for high-speed machining of large-sized workpieces such as manufacturing patterns, moulds, jigs, prototypes, and trimming of large-scale composite parts in the aerospace industry.
 
GRADEONE 
GradeOne Group, founded in 2018 in Abu Dhabi, acquired MP3 International Group in early 2019, a 16-year-old supplier in defence, security, law enforcement, and sporting products. Specialising in military hardware, pyrotechnics, ammunition, and supplies for army, special forces, navy, air force, law enforcement, and rescue services, the Group also offers sporting and hunting equipment and accessories.
 
Al Fattan
Al Fattan was founded to establish projects through industrial partnerships and strategic investments to promote manufacturing capacities in defence and manufacturing technology to enhance investments in vital sectors and achieve sustainable financial returns. The company aims to combine the latest technology and best national competencies to develop military and commercial products with global specifications and promote self-sufficiency in the UAE.
 
Calidus 
Calidus, a leading UAE-based defence technology company, showcased its latest unmanned vehicles at the event, including the WSHG All-Terrain Unmanned Vehicle and the MCAV0014 ALHEDA lightweight launcher system.

The WSHG offers high mobility and autonomy, featuring a 20 km operational range in challenging terrains. Running on electric and diesel power, it boasts a 6x6 all-wheel-drive system, double wishbone suspension, and Modular Autonomous Control Equipment for remote and autonomous capabilities.

Guardiaris Redefines Training
Slovenian company Guardiaris unveils SAMT, a laserless mobile training solution with patented LED technology. SAMT is highly customisable, accommodating small arms, anti-tank weapons, and military vehicles for realistic training at the individual or squad level. The plug-and-play system uses stackable LED screens, allowing easy expansion of the training area. It enables simultaneous training of soldiers across multiple units, enhancing marksmanship and tactical skills. Guardiaris specialises in cutting-edge simulation technology. 

HADES Unveils LAMIA UAV
Hades Defense Systems recently expanded its VTOL UAV line, focusing on payload capacity improvements. The LAMIA, unveiled at UMEX 2024, boasts a 15kg payload for versatile applications in civil or military scenarios. The hybrid design features a hexa-rotor multi-copter and fixed-wing aircraft configuration, offering extended operational endurance. Two variants, full-electric and internal-combustion engine hybrid, enhance overall performance and extend airtime. 
 
Insitu Launches  Integrator VTOL
Insitu, a Boeing Company, showcased its Integrator Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) uncrewed aircraft, featuring vertical launch and land capabilities without sacrificing payload or endurance. Designed for portability in tight spaces like ship decks, it operates in challenging maritime conditions without stationary launch equipment. The system offers over 24 hours of endurance.
 
Kintsugi’s AI Marvels
Kintsugi unveiled breakthrough autonomous AI solutions at the exhibition, showcasing locally engineered components like portable drones and high-altitude maritime surveillance FIREBIRD UAVs. The company’s swarm-enabled autonomous airships provide innovative solutions for future challenges. Kintsugi emphasises AI’s role in Decision Management and Support for enhanced operational efficiency.
 
 L3Harris Marine Partnership
L3Harris Technologies showcased its collaboration with Al Seer Marine on the Arabian Fox Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV). The locally manufactured USV integrates L3Harris’s ASView control system, Falcon-III RF-7800W HCLOS radios, and WESCAM MXTM-10 MS electro-optical/infrared sensor system. The Arabian Fox USV was featured at the USNAVCENT CTF-59 display, highlighting advancements in autonomous technologies and collaborative efforts in the defence sector.
 
Saab Showcases DeployNet
Saab’s DeployNet, a UAE-manufactured communication system, offers seamless and high-capacity bandwidth for security and crisis operations in military, civil, and industrial sectors. Operating effectively in challenging environments, it supports quick decision-making, enhances situational awareness, and accelerates data transfer. As a turn-key solution with mobility and swift deployment capabilities, DeployNet scales geographically and reinforces local network capacity.
 
Shield AI’s V-BAT Teams
Shield AI Launched V-BAT Teams Shield AI introduces V-BAT Teams, an aerial autonomy product enabling multiple V-BATs to autonomously execute missions in electronically contested environments. Running Hivemind, Shield AI’s AI pilot, V-BAT Teams provide intelligent, affordable mass deployment, functioning as a force multiplier. The modular Nvidia GPU upgrade facilitates rapid AI pilot installations on V-BATs, and the GCS ruggedised mobile control station streamlines operations for managing large teams of aircraft.
 
DCI’s Turnkey UAV Training 
French consultancy DCI showcased its Turnkey UAV Training Centre, offering tailored solutions for defence and government. With disruptive RAPAS family simulators, DCI emphasises transferring French armed forces’ know-how globally. 
 
LIG Nex1’s Warfare Solutions
LIG Nex1 presented future warfare solutions, emphasising robotics, unmanned, UAS, and AI technologies. Exhibits included Hyundai Rotem’s Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) and the Sea Sword-III Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV). The UGV features Anti-tank capabilities and 2.75in munitions, while the Sea Sword-III USV boasts a 12.7mm machine gun and 2.75in guided rocket launcher, showcasing 24-hour operational capability for real-sea seakeeping performance tests. 
 
Naval Group Unmanned Solutions 
Naval Group displayed civilian and military drones, emphasising innovative offerings for both sectors. With a strategic presence since 2010, it focuses on technology transfers and joint R&D programmes with UAE players. Highlights included Unmanned Systems Expertise, Autonomous Decision-Making Process (ADMP), and Mine Countermeasures Vessel. 
 
MASA Group Simulation 
MASA Group’s products, SWORD and Synergy, gained attention. SWORD, developed with global armies, enhances decision-making skills for command post staff. Featuring AI technology, SWORD provides immersive training for diverse scenarios. Synergy empowers decision-makers in emergency management.
 
Overwatch’s PHOLOS System
Overwatch presented PHOLOS, a game-changing unmanned system for kinetic and non-kinetic operations. Weighing 4.5kg without payload, PHOLOS offers unmatched portability and endurance. Sustaining missions for 41 minutes without payload and 25 minutes with payload, PHOLOS is compatible with various payloads and operates quietly.
 
AeroVironment Unmanned Showcase
AeroVironment made a strong impression with unmanned systems, focusing on JUMP 20 and Switchblade. JUMP 20, a VTOL fixed-wing aircraft, offers 15 hours of advanced ISR for defence. Switchblade 300 Block 20, a loitering munition, succeeds its predecessor with a high-resolution EO/IR panning camera and touchscreen FCU. Weighing four pounds, it swiftly deploys via tube-launch from various platforms, providing real-time video for beyond-line-of-sight targets.
 
Flight Stand 500
Tyto Robotics introduced Flight Stand 500, a thrust stand for AAM propulsion testing. Made in Canada, it has a 500 kgf thrust rating, 1,500 Nm torque capacity, and handles up to 1,000 V. Notable for its 1,000 Hz sampling rate, it enables real-time dynamic testing.
 
CATIC’s UAS
China’s CATIC presented its top-tier unmanned aerial systems (UAS), featuring the Wing Loong II, AR-2000, and AR500. Wing Loong II, a global UAV standout, boasts diverse weaponry like laser-guided bombs and missiles. Its sleek design houses an electro-optical payload pod for day/night surveillance. With a 100hp turbocharged engine, it achieves 280 km/h, a 4,000 km range, and patrols for over 20 hours. The spotlight was also on the recently introduced AR 2000.
 
Poly Technologies’ XC-25 
Poly Technologies exhibited the XC-25 electric VTOL unmanned aerial system, combining fixed-wing and multi-rotor advantages. Ideal for diverse applications, it offers multiple payloads, simple deployment, and up to 4.5 hours’ endurance. The electric motor ensures easy maintenance and zero emissions, catering to missions like aerial mapping, public security, and border inspection.
