Dubai Airshow 2023 Excitement in the Air as Take-off Time is Near

The 18th edition of the Dubai Airshow, set to take place from November 13 to 17, 2023 at the Dubai World Central (DWC), is gearing up to be the most significant yet. Boasting over 1,400 exhibitors, 20 country pavilions, 400 new exhibitors, 80 plus start-ups and a line-up of 300 speakers, this aerospace spectacle is primed to dazzle with the latest in technology and innovation.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, with the support of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Dubai Airports, the UAE Ministry of Defence and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, and in collaboration with the UAE Armed Forces, the bi-annual event is organised by Tarsus F&E LLC Middle East.

The static park and flying display will feature 180+ of the world’s most advanced aircraft on ground and in the air.

Advanced Aerial Mobility
With a keen focus on Advanced Aerial Mobility (AAM) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM), the event underscores Dubai’s leadership in these transformative fields. The prominence aligns with this year’s theme ‘The Future of the Aerospace Industry’, and will see the launch of a new pavilion dedicated to AAM, where regional and global players can discover the future flight technologies that are set to have a major influence over the way we travel.

Future of Flight
Attendees will have the opportunity to marvel at the latest innovations, including autonomous aircraft, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jets, such as:

Eve Air Mobility: Eve’s eVTOL is 100 per cent electric and its human-centric design ensures the safety, accessibility and comfort of both passengers and the community by minimising noise. It will be piloted at launch but ready for autonomous operations in the future.
Autoflight: A new autonomous aircraft called PROSPERITY I has been developed by Autoflight’s team of renowned engineers and designers. It boasts an impressive cruise speed of 200 km/h and is purposefully designed for seamless landings and takeoffs from urban landing pads. This aircraft is poised to revolutionise urban air mobility, making it possible for people to travel quickly and easily within cities without having to deal with traffic congestion.
Speeder Systems: A new vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) ground effect craft has been developed by Speeder Systems that can deliver a 20 kg cargo 6X cheaper, 40 per cent more efficiently, and with 99 per cent less emissions than a helicopter.
Bellwether Industries: Bellwether, a UK-based eVTOL aircraft company, has unveiled a full-scale model of its new four-passenger eVTOL, the Volar Onyx. The Onyx is designed to be compatible with urban environments, with a small footprint, low noise profile, and zero emissions. The Onyx is powered by a hybrid-electric engine, which gives it a range of up to 250 miles and a top speed of 150 mph.
Dovetail Electric: Dovetail Electric, a company that specialises in converting existing airframes into zero-emission commercial aircraft, has announced the certification of its integrated electric system. This system is designed to enable short-flight commercial aircraft to fly on electric power, reducing carbon emissions and operating costs.
Perceetech: Perceetech, a company specialising in solutions for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), has unveiled Skyrino. The Skyrino is a highly adaptable UAV designed for performance and endurance. With a maximum takeoff weight of up to 600kg and an impressive payload capacity of up to 200kg, it is perfectly equipped for a wide range of tasks, including aerial photography, mapping, surveying, inspection and delivery.
VoltAero: VoltAero has unveiled the Cassio, an electric-hybrid aircraft designed for regional and short-haul flights. The Cassio will have three variants, with four, six, and 10 seats. It is powered by a hybrid propulsion system that combines an electric motor with a small gas turbine engine. The aircraft will have propulsive power ranging from 330 to 600 kilowatts.
Lilium Jet: Lilium has unveiled a full-scale model of its seven-seater electric VTOL jet, which is designed to revolutionise regional and short-haul air travel. The Lilium Jet is powered by 36 electric engines, giving it a range of up to 250 miles and a top speed of 175 mph. It is also quiet, with a noise level that is significantly lower than traditional helicopters.

Sustainability Path
In the Middle East, sustainability initiatives are gaining momentum. Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) partnered with Airbus to boost the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) market. Qatar Airways has signed a deal with Shell for SAF procurement. Globally, Shell Aviation is supplying SAF to airlines like JetBlue and Japan Airlines. Air bp sold SAF from its Castellon refinery in Spain.

Emirates recently conducted a successful SAF-powered flight and allocated US$200 million for R&D on eco-friendly aviation tech.
Honeywell has launched a new technology called UOP eFining that produces lower-carbon aviation fuel from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide captured from industry.

Boeing, a key player in the aviation industry’s sustainability efforts, is the host sponsor for the Aerospace 2050 conference, where it will share its expertise and advancements in eco-friendly aviation technologies as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Largest Space Pavilion
The upcoming event will boast the largest Space pavilion ever, featuring top industry players like the UAE Space Agency, TII, Intelsat, ICEYE, Roketsan, and more. This extravaganza offers exclusive space content, hosting ministries, space agencies, end users, and environmental agencies, with a strong emphasis on space business and investment.
Renowned astronauts are set to grace the main stage, sharing their extraordinary experiences and visions for the future of space exploration.

The UAE Space Agency, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, Bayanat, and Planet, successfully recently launched the Space Startup Pitch Competition — Sustainability for and from Space, which was a part of the Vista Space Challenge.
The competition, with an application deadline that ended on October 19, aimed to provide startups from around the world with a platform to present innovative solutions addressing climate change and the sustainability of Earth’s resources through the use of space technologies.

It sought to nurture Artificial Intelligence projects that analyse space-related data and provide long-term solutions for space missions while addressing environmental challenges on Earth.
The competition allowed startups to pitch their projects, and after evaluation and shortlisting, the finalists were notified.
These finalists were then invited to present their pitches on the Dubai Airshow stage on November 13.
