Preparations in Full Swing for Expodefensa 2023

The organisers have intensified preparations for Expodefensa 2023, the global benchmark event for Defence and Security in Latin America, slated to be held from December 5 to 7 in Bogotá, Colombia, where topics ranging from traditional strategic missions to new challenges and threats in the region are set to be addressed.

Held under the patronage of the Colombian Ministry of Defence, the ninth edition of the international trade show will present the latest defence and security related technology, equipment and solutions for the armed forces and the police.

New Political Dynamic
With its 22 countries, Latin America is engaging in a new political dynamic tending towards the reinforcement of the State to enhance public security in its territorial, environmental and socio-economic aspects.
Strategic thought in Latin America today focuses on managing the converging problems with which the various countries are confronted: territorial protection, border surveillance, organised crime, narcotics trafficking, and environmental threats.

Faced with these new security challenges, will the strategic mission of the armed forces evolve towards a greater duality of Security and Defence capabilities in the region? What convergence of capability approaches can be foreseen in support of reinforced synergies between military forces and civil security? How can the conditions be created for stronger global security in Latin America?

Expodefensa will attempt to provide answers to such issues, through the gathering of more than 11,000 professional participants, including nearly 250 international exhibitors and more than 90 official delegations from 24 countries.

Range of Themes
The range of themes that will be covered during this year’s event includes the space domain, as a growing opportunity in terms of security and defence in the region; the safeguarding of natural reserves and protected species as part of the fight against climate change; and the coordination of decision making and deployment of resources, as part of crisis response and management.

Thus, a specific spotlight will be directed upon new security and defence challenges on the continent, with a focus on: warning intelligence equipment, space technology, resources to manage all types of crises up to natural and environmental disasters, and the means of protecting wild lands and biodiversity.

As a showcase for multi-domain solutions (land, air, naval, space and cyberspace), Expodefensa will also enable governments and all stakeholders from the military, police and civil protection forces to build the conditions for global security in Latin America, and to seize the opportunities offered by technology, equipment, and the lessons learned from recent crises and through exchanges in the area of doctrine and training.

Main Hub
Expodefensa’s first edition was held in 2009 at the Corferias exhibition centre in Bogotá, as part of the project of the Ministry of National Defence of Colombia to present the capabilities of its armed forces to key international players.

Since 2015, The Mindefensa (Codaltec)-Corferias-COGES alliance has developed Expodefensa, making it the main hub for security and defence in Latin America.

The eighth edition of the show was held successfully from November 29 to December, 2021, 1 at the headquarters of Corferias in Bogotá, with 220 exhibitors, 62 official delegations from 24 countries, including 28 Colombian official delegations, and around 11,000 participants.

During that edition, the exhibitors came up with a wide range of innovative products, including specialised drones for security work, boats and ships designed for the defence medical corps and also the latest in weapons development technology.

For the first time during the exhibition, the Orion Defence Ministers’ Summit was also organised, with over 40 countries taking part. At the meeting, important issues were discussed regarding the actions that could be carried out specifically to combat the transnational threat — drug trafficking.

During the three days of the show, Colombia becomes the point of convergence of the Latin American security and defence markets .
