BAE Systems’Focus on Strength Through Partnership

BAE Systems will be celebrating its 26th year in the UAE in 2023. With a global workforce of 90,500 people in more than 40 countries, the company prides itself on working closely with local partners to support economic development by transferring knowledge, skills and technology.

Kelly has been living and working in Abu Dhabi since September 2021 and has enjoyed learning about the national interests in the UAE and across the region. He said: “I’m fascinated by the dynamics in the region and truly inspired by the leadership and ambition that exists here in the UAE, including the country’s long-term vision to build prosperity. For my team and me, our role is to identify how we can support these ambitions through partnerships and collaboration. Building and strengthening networks have been particularly important to me since moving out here, and I’ve been humbled by those who have welcomed me so warmly to the region and to Abu Dhabi.”

For BAE Systems, Kelly believes that there is strength through partnership, vision and ambition. He said: “The UAE is becoming a disrupter in a number of defence and space technologies, and we’re here to identify how and where we can best align our leading technologies to drive mutual benefit. It’s important for us to be a good fit for customer needs, develop long-term sustainable partnerships and contribute to the communities where we operate, particularly in helping to build human capital. This includes investing in training, skills and the next generation. One way we are achieving this is through our STEM education outreach and internship programmes, which we’re proud to have in place in the UAE, as well as other countries in the region.”

As one of many defence and technology companies in the region, what’s different about BAE Systems? Kelly tells us: “For me, one of our differentiators is our breadth and depth of capability across our global ecosystem. We operate in many markets where we design, develop, deliver and integrate world-leading products and services. We have access to the region and around the world. That’s a powerful differentiator as we can help identify what’s available and how we can work with local partners to offer a value-for-money solution that can also develop sustainable capabilities in-country.”

He adds: “We operate from deep sea to deep space across multiple domains, bringing capabilities that meet our customers’ needs. Sometimes you find that companies have niche capability in only one or two areas, but we have the expertise, kit and training to integrate across all domains to deliver integrated solutions that meet defence and security needs.”

Kelly manages a team of Country Directors across the region who are each looking forward to the next edition of IDEX. He said: “It’s always an exciting event as the UAE attracts people from around the world to see the latest innovations and technology. It’s a great marketplace. We’ve been participating at IDEX for many years, and I’m confident this will be one of the biggest and best to date, with fewer restrictions impacting travel caused by the pandemic. I’m excited to showcase our capabilities and look forward to seeing some of the new technology displayed in the IDEX Next_Gen space designed for start-ups and entrepreneurs. It will be great to see the new investment and capabilities designed in the country to see if there could be any way to partner and incorporate solutions into our own capability offering. There’s always a strong military force support during the show, and I’m looking forward to meeting many old and new friends and continuing our conversations about their needs and what we could potentially offer.”

Showcasing a Range of Capabilities at IDEX
On display at BAE Systems’ stand will be a range of capabilities across the maritime, land, space and air domains, including the adaptable Amphibious Combat Vehicle that’s capable of deploying Marines from ship to shore, the unique and low-cost APKWS® laser-guidance kit that adds precision to targeting and defeating enemy targets, Herne™, the innovative and highly configurable Extra Large Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (XLAUV) that offers a new military capability that enables navies to cover more of the underwater battlespace than ever before, as well as interactive showcases of the company’s space, cyber, electronic warfare, naval and air training capabilities.

Kelly adds: “As well as our physical and interactive kit, on display will also be a new immersive zone that we’ll be showcasing for our customers, partners and friends. We’ll be hosting this on our stand, where you can enjoy a high-tech experience of our breadth of capability, equipment and services that are all tied together by a digital thread. If you’re interested to find out more, please drop by our stand (03-C10), and we can discuss your specific needs.”.
