Customisable Solutions from BAE Systems

at the show, BAE Systems is highlighting its Air Tasking Order Planning System (ATOPS) capability, a customisable air mission planning system for force and unit level planning. It provides asynchronous, collaborative staff interaction for rapid management, sharing, and displaying of information for planning and support of in-progress ATO operations.

Bob Settle, Progam Manager C4ISR Missions Systems BAE Systems told Nation Shield: “ATOPS was derived from an ongoing baseline of web-based mission planning software started in 1999 by the U.S. Navy. The initial Strike Planning Folder (SPF) programme was used on U.S. Navy carriers and significantly cut down on planning time, directly increasing sortie rates. It allowed more time for aircrew to plan tactics versus the time required to transfer information from legacy stovepipe (standalone) systems into their strike plans.” Excerpts from the interview.

Tell us about the ATOPS capability and what it does?
ATOPS provides secure, automated air battle planning and execution management for military commanders and staff. It provides the means to plan, direct, and control all theater air operations and to coordinate with land, maritime, and special operations elements. ATOPS provides all tools necessary to create the Air Tasking Order (ATO) and its related Airspace Control Order (ACO). It also provides the capability for detailed mission planning, enabling the aircrew to plan its individual missions, using the completed ATO and ACO.

Why do customers choose ATOPS specifically?
BAE Systems’ ATOPS provides a customisable and automated development of courses of action (COA) against the commander’s strategic intent and objectives, providing more time for detailed planning. It allows staff to collaborate securely with automated assistance to create ATOs and ACOs, and enables commanders to review and monitor ATO execution while providing mission status for an overall detailed campaign. Reporting tools provide near-real time evaluation of ongoing air operations, and provide commanders with actionable intelligence to develop and support battlespace missions. It provides an integrated but uncomplicated linkage between force and unit level with a familiar look and feel, which customers appreciate.

What else would you like our audience to know about ATOPS?
ATOPS is a modern Java Enterprise Edition (JavaEE) Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) web-based application, is fully consistent with the U.S. Air Force (USAF) SOA vision and design strategies, and is based on many years of experience in developing architecturally compliant web-based applications and services. ATOPS is a highly mature, modern, well-architected product and easy to extend for additional external interfaces and micro services.
