Diehl Defence’s Combat-Proven Solutions Make a Strong Impression

Air defence systems are used to protect populations, critical infrastructures, objects, as well as ground troops against attacks from the air. Particularly ground-based air defence is capable of providing continuous area protection over the long term. Diehl Defence, a leading supplier of state-of-the-art defence systems covering different ranges, successfully concluded its participation at IDEX by highlighting its combat-proven solutions. In an interview, Helmut Rauch, CEO, Diehl Defence, discusses the advantages of the company’s IRIS-T air-to-air missile and expansion plans in the Gulf region. Excerpts:

What solutions did Diehl Defence showcase at IDEX/NAVDEX 2023?
Diehl Defence exhibited models of the combat proven ground-based air defence (GBAD) system IRIS-T SLM, which consists of the components missile launcher, multifunctional radar and TOC (tactical operations centre). The surface-to-air guided missile itself, IRIS-T SL, was also showcased as a 1:1 model on our booth.
IRIS-T, the well-known short-range air-to-air missile, was also part of the presented Diehl Defence product portfolio. The missile originates from a true European success story and convinces with its unmatched combat capabilities as well as its state-of-the art technology.

Another application of the IRIS-T air-to-air guided missile is the IRIS-T SLS Mk III, which was also showcased as a model. The IRIS-T SLS Mk III is a complete surface-to-air (very) short-range air defence system (launcher with effectors, sensors and fire control system) in only one protected carrier vehicle and, therefore, highly mobile.
Furthermore, Diehl Defence exhibited the HPEM SkyWolf C-UAS effector at IDEX, a new and unique generation of effector systems for the engagement of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), based on high-power electromagnetic technology.

Different kinds of ammunition such as naval ammunition, the new guided artillery ammunition VULCANO as well as LIBELLE, the next generation of weapon systems for the engagement of armoured combat vehicles on the battlefield of the future, completed the exhibited product portfolio.

You referred to IRIS-T as a European success story. Could you elaborate why?
The IRIS-T air-to-air missile is a great example of true European defence cooperation. During the 1990s, a European consortium of six nations with Diehl Defence as prime contractor started the development of this new generation missile, all within the given cost and time frame. One of the highlights of the missile is the image processing seeker and the infrared technology, respectively – a contribution of Diehl Defence. Up to now, we have manufactured and delivered over 4,000 IRIS-T missiles in this variant of Block 1. Currently, the air forces of 12 customer nations worldwide rely on the capabilities of IRIS-T.

Furthermore, the development of IRIS-T Block 2 will have a significant performance increase. Other blocks are also under discussion. They will include further performance enhancements and be able to fulfil new operational requirements.

Does Diehl have any major expansion plans in the UAE/Gulf region?
Diehl has been represented in the Gulf region for more than 10 years now and has successfully carried out a wide variety of projects together with government authorities and Emirati companies during this time. In accordance with applicable regulations, we strive to provide the country with the greatest possible benefit from our products and wherever possible, we try to enter into appropriate partnerships with local companies.

How is Diehl placed in terms of internship programmes for UAE students?
Diehl is the leading industrial company for training programmes (internships) in the UAE. We have been cooperating with Khalifa University Abu Dhabi since 2011 and have had 45 students for internships in Germany so far. We started with internships, then added mentoring programmes and finally launched our Diehl Leadership Programme for young Emirati talents.

Diehl provided Tawazun Council with the blueprint for the SEEDS programme and was the first company to take part with six students in 2019. Furthermore, we received the “Building Bridges” award as a role model at the Offset Conference in London. Diehl also supports the new Tawazun Council programme EGAP and helped to organise the first event with German companies on January 25. EGAP focuses on Emirati students who recently graduated and prepares them for their new jobs abroad with managerial and industrial experience in world-leading companies.

How effective are Diehl’s High-Power Electromagnetic (HPEM) systems and how can the Gulf region benefit from this?
Our High-Power Electro-Magnetic systems are very successful and in use worldwide, in a wide variety of designs. They are used to protect people (for example during the G7 summit or big sporting events) or critical infrastructures. Our HPEM SkyWolf is a new and unique generation of effector systems for the engagement of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). HPEM directly affects the semiconductors of the control electronics inside the small UAS (sUAS) and thus does not depend on a communication link of the UAS to the controller. Especially in the Gulf region, the Counter Drone System GUARDION could secure governmental buildings, airports or other critical infrastructures from hostile small and mini drones .
