Focusing on Emirati Female Excellence

In conversation with Samira Harib, Senior Vice President and Head of Government Relations at Saab

As an Emirati woman, I have strongly led my journey keeping in mind and following the words and guidance of the wise leadership and the forefathers and builders of the UAE. I have always believed in myself, my country and the wise leadership that has given me the strength to challenge myself. I have always listened to elders, friends and colleagues, and have strived to learn from their positive experiences and ignored the negative aspects.

These daily learnings have strengthened my fight for success and helped me realise my dreams.
I got married at an early age while I was still at school, but in parallel to building my family, I started my professional journey all the while completing my higher education to receive my bachelor’s degree. I worked in different organisations, both in the government and private sectors, and enjoyed gaining knowledge and advancing myself professionally. My experiences over the years also prepared me well for my current position at Saab.

Saab in the UAE is partnering with government, defence and security organisations and academic institutions to drive meaningful change to the UAE’s defence and high-tech industry landscape.

I am a single mother with four daughters and two sons. My four daughters have graduated from different fields and hold bachelor’s degrees in Public Relations, Quality Management, Petroleum Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. While my two sons are currently studying at Khalifa University and HBMS University.

Even during some of the toughest stages of my life, I never gave up! I continued my professional journey and achieved a Master’s degree from University of Wollongong, one of the world’s leading Australian University. Moreover, I proudly worked at the UAE Armed Forces where I gained unparalleled knowledge that helped me to handle my current position very smoothly.

I am currently working at Saab Middle East, a joint venture with the well-known Swedish company, and supporting Saab AB, the wider Market Area, and our landed company Saab UAE.

Saab has a long history in the UAE and is on a continued growth journey in the country. The company has made significant contributions to the local defence industry and is playing a central role in the UAE’s growth in the sector.

Saab UAE, established in 2018, is a facility in Abu Dhabi’s Tawazun Industrial Park (TIP), serving as a centre for the development and production of a variety of defence and security products. As a local, home-grown company, it is committed to Emiratisation by supporting and developing local talent.

Saab UAE is focused on empowering young Emirati women. We have Emirati women working in different specialisations and under the guidance of Saab experts to train and build a strong Emirati workforce. In cooperation with Tawazun Council, Saab has also participated in the Sustain & Enhance Emiratisation in Defence and Security (SEEDS) programme. The first batch of Emirati engineers through the programme - three females and one male, have completed their six-month internship, and have since joined a growing number of Emiratis employed at Saab.

Saab’s participation in SEEDS allows Emirati professionals to work alongside global experts and receive real-world training at the company’s facilities in Sweden ahead of taking full-time roles within the company. Since then, and building on our commitment to fostering Emirati talent and promoting long-term growth within the defence sector, we are expanding our partnership through Tawazun Council’s Emirati Global Acceleration Program (EGAP).

My personal advice to young Emiratis is to have full confidence in themselves, their skills and talents, and to set clear goals in life and dream with open eyes and form a way to realise these dreams and goals. Even if you have an obstacle in your way, stop for a while, take a moment to reassess, and find another route to your goal. With time, proper planning and perseverance, you will find means to achieve your goals.

We must always remember that our leadership have trusted and invested in us, and now it is time to make sure that we deliver back to our leadership and the country in the best possible way and with full pride and determination.

I strongly believe and insist that the UAE deserves only the best. I am committed to serving my country through Saab where we provide unique and innovative products, services and systems and build a strong Emirati workforce capable of leading and advancing the defence and security sector well into the future.
