From Torpedoes to Missiles, All Under One Roof
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), an ISO certified enterprise under the Indian Defence Ministry, is showcasing various products at the show. BDL is the only company in India manufacturing various types of missiles and other defence equipment. Its product profile includes Anti Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM), Surface to Air missiles (SAMs), Air to Air Missiles, Under Water Weapons, Counter Measuring Dispensing Systems, Ground Support Systems and other allied test equipment.

BDL has ventured into the export market mostly with torpedoes. It also undertakes refurbishment and life extension of vintage missiles for Indian defence services. The company has an MoU with Thales, UK for Starstreak missiles.
“We export some of our products to friendly countries but are open for export to other countries on a case by case basis,” Siddharth Mishra, Chairman and Managing Director, told Nation Shield on the sidelines of the show.
He added: “We make aero structures, composite materials, defence and weapons systems, electronic warfare/countermeasures, unmanned vehicles and systems all of which are designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).”
At the show, BDL is displaying Milan 2T, a man portable (infantry) second generation ATGM that can destroy tanks fitted with Explosive Reactive Armour as well as moving and stationary targets. Also on show is the Konkurs–M, a second generation, mechanised infantry ATGM, capable of destroying armoured vehicles equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour and moving and stationary targets.
Torpedo Advanced Lightweight (TAL) is an electrically propelled, self-homing underwater weapon that can be launched from a ship/ helicopter. It has a seawater activated battery. Besides, BDL has displayed a heavy weight torpedo, Varunastra, a ship launched, electrically propelled underwater weapon. Equipped with the most advanced automatic and remote controlled guidance system, Varunastra uses its own intelligence to trace the target.
In the missile category, there is the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), a high response, quick reaction, vertically launched supersonic missile designed to neutralise enemy aerial threats – missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, helicopters. Its different variants are used by army, navy and air force.
Also on display is Akash, an indigenously developed, all-weather, air defence weapon system, that uses a high explosive, pre-fragmented warhead that can engage multiple threats simultaneously. The Counter Measures Dispensing System (CMDS) on display is an ultra-modern Chaff and Flare Dispensing System that provides self-protection to the aircraft against radar guided and heat seeking missiles launched from air or ground.
