Providing Real Time, Critical Flight Information
A head-up display or HUD, as it’s widely known, is a see-through display that sits directly in a pilot’s line of sight, significantly increasing situational awareness. The system presents real-time, critical flight information overlaid onto a view of the outside world, allowing pilots to digest vital data with a ‘head-up, eyes-out’ approach. Lee Tomlinson, Director of Head-Up Displays, ES, BAE Systems, briefs Nation Shield on the many superior features of LiteHUD, an ultra-compact HUD that can be integrated into almost any cockpit.
How does LiteHUD work?
LiteHUD works using our patented optical Waveguide technology. This disruptive technology removes the complexity, mass, and volume associated with a conventional HUD by innovatively manipulating light through parallel sheets of glass.
What platforms can LiteHUD be integrated into? Has it been selected for any?
LiteHUD can be integrated into any platform and has already been selected for 7 platforms across a variety of aircraft types including Turboprops, Fighters and Transport aircraft.
What are some of the benefits/discriminating features of LiteHUD?
LiteHUD is 60 per cent smaller and 50 per cent lighter than conventional HUDs. It is compatible with a multitude of different aircraft and can easily be integrated with a Large Area Display. It is also up to 40 per cent more reliable than the old analogue HUDs that are still in service today. LiteHUD is market leading in its combination of size, weight and performance benefits as well as its ability to significantly reduce the through life cost to the end user.
Where is LiteHUD produced and how much demand is there for the capability?
LiteHUD is currently produced at BAE Systems’ facilities in Rochester, UK, and drawing upon a global supply chain we are able to offer a range of options for industrialisation and support. We are expecting sales in excess of 1,500 HUDs in the future.
