The new WFES Solar Expo at the summit focuses on solar energy, a major talking point in the Gulf these days. Don’t you think solar energy can not only complement but also compete with fossil fuel which is the strength of oil-rich GCC? Also, the GCC is blessed with lot of sun and you have the Masdar solar project in the UAE. What new initiatives in solar energy are being highlighted at the summit?
The Middle East and GCC face a rapidly-growing demand for energy, and renewable energy will play a key role in helping these countries meet the demands, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing local jobs.

Solar and wind are the two key renewable energy sectors in the region, and are increasingly competitive with fossil fuels. With the rapid decrease in the cost of solar photovoltaic modules, which have dropped in cost by 75 percent since 2009, according to the recent IRENA report “REthinking Energy 2015” and the MENA region’s large sun exposure, solar energy will help to reduce the reliance on fossil fuel and drive new jobs.

Driving innovation, WFES has expanded the Solar Expo to showcase solar innovations and bring together experts, innovators, suppliers, and buyers for new business opportunities, with more than 150 solar players such as Abdul Latif Jameel, ADC Energy Systems, ALEC Energy, AMANA, EFG Hermes, First Solar, Renewable Energy Company, SkyPower, SolarWorld, Suntech Power, and Yingli Solar.

Among the many solar innovations on display at WFES Solar Expo will be photovoltaic modules, concentrated solar power solutions, and additional cutting-edge solar technologies.
Complementing the exhibition, the WFES Solar Expo conference program will also cover the entire spectrum of the solar industry to advance collaboration and debate the latest development, from finance to projects and regulations.

WFES is the world’s most influential event dedicated to advancing future energy. What the future trends in energy that will be focused at the summit?
WFES is set to be the MENA region’s largest platform for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean technology, and is expected to welcome more than 30,000 attendees from 170 countries, and 650 exhibiting companies from more than 40 countries.

The WFES conference agenda will cover the challenges faced by the region’s utility providers, and innovative approaches to financing renewable projects, to trends that will shape the industry over the next two decades, and a country spotlight on Egypt’s solar and wind markets. Participants are set to include ministers, regulators, top-level industry professionals, and chief economists.

Highlighting one of the region’s strongest renewable energy markets, the new Egypt Energy Forum will focus on the country’s more than USD 13 billion private sector financing opportunity to 2020 as the country aims to double installed power capacity to 60 GW by 2020.

The Egypt Energy Forum will also serve as a platform to learn about the latest developments in the power, water, gas, solar, wind, and waste management sectors, while enabling attendees to hear how the country’s leaders articulate the ten-year vision for the nation.

Among the key issues to be discussed are practical measures envisaged to accelerate renewable energy adoption across the country, including a proposed feed-in-tariff program, the rollout of solar rooftops, and updates on the public-private partnerships. Developers, operators, manufacturers, and contractors can also hear from experts in the finance sector about its appetite for Egyptian project finance.

Sustainability Business Connect returns across all three shows, offering networking and business development opportunities through pre-arranged meetings between exhibitors and buyers from government and private sectors. The program hosted more than 1,800 meetings in 2015.

Further energizing the region’s sustainability sector, WFES will be co-located with International Water Summit, held in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, and EcoWaste, on the region’s urgent waste disposal challenges, held in partnership with Tadweer.

Energy efficiency is another major theme at the summit? Which are the main key participants from the segment at the summit and what are their themes?
Energy efficiency is a key theme of WFES, with leading companies such as ABB, Engie, GE/Alstom, Schneider Electric, and Siemens demonstrating the latest advancements across themes such as home and office automation, energy-efficient lighting and vehicles, smart grids and meters, and the next generation of solar photovoltaic power generation.

The WFES conference agenda will address energy efficiency topics such as how to build the utility provider of tomorrow and business models, government subsidies, capital investment, and managing IT, accelerating the progress of a low-carbon future with business diversification, and city-wide programs in Smart Cities.

Among the key participants exchanging best practices in energy efficiency are the Saudi Electricity and Co-Generation Regulatory Authority ECRA, Dubai’s Regulation Supervision Bureau, Hydrocity LLP, energy companies such as BP, Shell, and ADNOC, and the Saudi Energy Efficiency Centre and Toronto Atmospheric Fund.

In particular, the new Future Cities Forum will address sustainability across Smart Cities, covering low-carbon economies, managing urbanizations, future-proofing cities, tackling climate change, partnerships, financing, and sector sessions on water, energy, urban planning, and transport.
At the Future Cities Forum, key participants include Atkins, China Vanke, The Executive Office – Dubai, Masdar City, Schneider Electric, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and cities such as Southampton, UK and Freiburg, Germany.

You also address clean technology. Does the summit look at how investment in clean technology can be sustained without making energy more expensive?
Clean technology is another vital part of WFES, as we bring together world leaders across to exchange best practices in driving a sustainable future.

The new Sustainable Transport Zone supports clean technology innovation in transportation and fuel-efficient vehicles. Manufacturers and innovators will showcase sustainable transportation technology across land, sea, and air; complemented by conference proceedings featuring global thought leaders on sustainable transportation.

In previous years, leading fuel efficient vehicle manufacturers Renault Group, Nissan Group, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche, along with Portugal’s MOBI.E electromobility charging system, have participated in WFES, showcasing vehicles such as the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the high-efficiency diesel-powered Renault Clio.

What are the alternative energy sources the summit may look at other than solar?
WFES will address a wide range of renewable energy including solar power, wind power, nuclear, hydro-electric and geothermal.

Demonstrating the strong regional potential, MENA is set to the second-fastest growing for renewable energy investment, reaching USD 35 billion per year from 2015 to 2020, according to the IRENA report “REthinking Energy 2015”. In the UAE, for example, the cost of solar energy generation is now on par with fossil fuels.
