Airbus Secures 155 Commitments at Heli-Expo

Airbus Helicopters concluded a successful showing at the 2024 Heli-Expo, securing 155 commitments, including 40 firm orders, from customers around the world for its diverse range of multi-mission helicopters.

The company secured a landmark deal with THC for up to 120 helicopters of various types, including a firm order for 18 H125s and H145s. This agreement solidifies Airbus Helicopters’ position as a leader in the helicopter emergency medical services (EMS) market, with the H145 being chosen by both THC and DRF Luftrettung, which is acquiring up to 10 units.

U.S. operator HealthNet Aeromedical Services expanded its all-Airbus fleet by adding four H135s.

Robust Partnerships
Niagara Helicopters, the Canadian tour operator, incorporated six H130s, while Bristow made a significant move by ordering up to 15 H135s to cater to the expanding energy market.

Airbus Helicopters and LCI, in tandem, unveiled two robust partnerships. One is focused on delving into the advanced air mobility (AAM) market. The second partnership aims to address the industry’s long-term needs, spanning capacity, sustainability, and financing requirements.

Bruno Even, Airbus Helicopters CEO, stated: “We thank our customers for placing their trust in our teams and our products and services with 155 commitments and 40 firm orders at this year’s Heli-Expo. In 2023, our global fleet achieved three million flight hours so customer feedback is essential and it drives the continuous improvement of our solutions to enhance their critical, often life-saving, missions.”

Airbus Helicopters announced an HCare contract for Air Centre Helicopters’ 18 H225s and an HCare PBH contract for DSA’s eight H135s. The partnership with GPMS enhances FlyScan, allowing broader data sharing and providing operators with proactive technical expertise and tailored recommendations.

Green Flights
Airbus Helicopters also performed demo flights during Heli-Expo with an H145 and an H125 using 30 per cent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

In 2023, Airbus doubled its SAF usage to over 11 million litres, surpassing the 10 per cent target for total fuel consumption across divisions. This accounted for two per cent of global SAF production and resulted in a significant 23,587-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions.

Here is how Airbus did it:
In Transport and Operations
Airbus daily transports parts with the Beluga from manufacturing to assembly using Sustainable Aviation Fuel since December 2019, a key step in the decarbonisation roadmap.

In Employee Travels
Airbus provides SAF for internal business travel with Volotea and AirCorsica. To decrease employee CO2 footprint, Airbus inked a 2023 agreement with Air France for SAF purchases on trips between five European cities. The initiative is expanding, with Airbus pursuing agreements with additional airlines for more employee routes supplied with SAF.

In Flight Tests
Airbus Helicopters is using SAF for development test flights and training in Marignane, France, and Donauwörth, Germany, and conducts demo flights like the one in Paris Air Show 2023 with the H160.

In Aircraft Deliveries
In 2023, Airbus set a record for SAF deliveries, a result of enhanced availability at global delivery centres. Since 2016, Airbus has suggested SAF to customers, and a notable initiative offers airlines up to five per cent pure SAF at no extra cost to support their decarbonisation efforts. IndiGo became the inaugural recipient, choosing this option for a new A320neo delivery from Toulouse.

With Partners
In pursuit of the industry’s 2030 target of 17.5 billion litres of SAF, Airbus collaborates with global energy producers, airlines, and airports.
This involves joining initiatives like the French “SAF in Occitanie” and the Japanese “Act for Sky.”

A notable contribution to local SAF production occurred in Australia through a partnership with Qantas and the Queensland Government. In November 2023, under the ICAO ACT-SAF initiative, Airbus and ICAO signed a Declaration of Intent to assess South America’s SAF feedstocks and production.

Strengthening Chinese-European collaboration, Airbus and CNAF signed an MOU on SAF production and standard formulation. Strategic partnerships include DG Fuels in the U.S. for technology and fuel production and Lanzajet for advancing SAF facilities.

Another MOU with Masdar, an Abu Dhabi energy company, signifies Airbus’s commitment to furthering SAF production.

All of these efforts, and more like them, were led by teams across Airbus, in every region of the world, and contributed to the company’s 2023 objective to use 10 per cent SAF in operations and customer deliveries. They have enabled Airbus to be a major SAF user globally. While this is an important achievement, Airbus has set an even greater target for 2024 amounting to an average 15 per cent of SAF in the fuel mix.
