Chinook & F-15EX: Boeing’s Stars Shine at DIMDEX

Boeing showcased its advanced defence capabilities at the Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition & Conference (DIMDEX 2024), which took place from March 4-6.

The versatility of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, demonstrated in delivering supplies to disaster-hit regions and successful rescue missions, took centre stage. The F-15EX fighter, with its unmatched payload, range, and speed, was prominently featured, solidifying its position as a pivotal fighter for the U.S. Air Force and potential international customers.

The company aims to strengthen partnerships in the region and support the mission readiness of its existing aircraft in Qatar.

Vince Logsdon, Vice President of Global Business Development & Strategic Marketing at Boeing Defense, Space & Security, expressed delight in participating in DIMDEX, emphasising its significance in engaging with customers and partners, and reinforcing Boeing’s steadfast partnership and growing workforce in Qatar.

Many countries, including Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UAE, already operate CH-47 Chinook, the world’s leading heavy-lift helicopter.

Chinook’s Valour
Synonymous with evolution and adaptability for over half a century, the latest model of the Chinook -- the CH-47F -- might bear a familiar silhouette, but its transformative modern engineering reveals itself upon a closer look.

The introduction of the Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) Digital Glass Cockpit, its Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS), and advanced cargo-handling systems make it well suited to meet air forces’ needs in the Middle East.

Air-to-air Refuelling
The CH-47F Block II integrates cutting-edge designs, featuring an enhanced fuel system, strengthened fuselage, and drivetrain, enabling the transportation of heavier payloads over extended distances. With the added capability of air-to-air refuelling, a vital feature employed by the U.S. Army in global missions, the CH-47F Block II stands as a modernised and immediately deployable asset.

Serving as a crucial capability today, it also establishes a robust foundation for future technology insertions.

“The Chinook Block II isn’t just about meeting today’s demands but winning tomorrow’s challenges effectively and safely,” said Heather McBryan, vice president and programme manager, Cargo Programmes, at Boeing Defense, Space and Security. “It provides added capability and flexibility to keep the Chinook flying for our customers into 2060 and beyond.”

In fortifying the global readiness of the Chinook fleet, Boeing underscores its unwavering commitment through an expanded range of services for the CH-47 Chinook. The implementation of next-generation product support, facilitated by performance-based logistics contracts, ensures reliable readiness with heightened availability and reduced downtime.

Boeing’s comprehensive suite of forward-thinking offerings encompasses digital aviation solutions, integrated fleet support, vertical lift maintenance, as well as modifications and in-depth repairs. This approach exemplifies Boeing’s dedication to enhancing the operational capabilities and longevity of the CH-47 Chinook.

“Our approach is not just about supporting the aircraft but optimising its potential and foreseeing the evolving needs of our global partners,” said Anne Schroeder, director of International Government Services Business Development at Boeing Global Services.

The extensive userbase of the Chinook attests to the trust defence operators place in its reliability. Its widespread adoption on both a global and regional scale underscores its multi-mission capability and interoperability. With a formidable legacy, Chinook stands ready to execute the most challenging cargo, rescue, and humanitarian missions across the globe.

Cornerstone Fighter
Crafted to provide value to the U.S. Air Force and potential international customers, the F-15EX has emerged as a cornerstone fighter set to play a pivotal role for several decades to come.

“While the F-15EX’s payload, range, and speed are well known, its true advantage is beneath the surface. Its new digital core ensures it is designed to be future-ready from the ground up to integrate emerging technologies and systems seamlessly. The F-15EX’s payload capabilities are exceptional.

The Eagle II’s speed and range put it in a league of its own and will keep the warfighter several steps ahead of the adversary while increasing the survivability of any mission. This fighter is not just crafted for today’s battles but the battles of tomorrow,” said Matt “Phat” Giese, Boeing F-15 Chief Pilot.

The F-15 advanced fighter is in service with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and South Korea, and has attracted interest from other air forces like Indonesia and Poland. The Qatar F-15QA shares significant commonality with the latest U.S. Air Force F-15EX variant.

The F-15 fighter symbolises ongoing technological innovation, consistently pushing the boundaries in air dominance. The F-15EX’s digital backbone, latest mission systems and software capabilities and the capacity to carry hypersonic weapons, makes it a key element of the U.S. Air Force’s tactical fighter fleet.
The F-15EX for air forces is constructed with state-of-the-art mission systems and software capabilities.

From its inception, the design facilitates integration of new technologies, including next-generation sensors, hypersonic payloads, and manned-unmanned teaming. This design approach aligns effectively with the anticipated needs of militaries for future warfare.

Aviation Marvels
At the exhibition, attendees explored the AH-64 Apache, recognised as the most sophisticated combat-proven attack helicopter, along with the T-7, an advanced pilot training system boasting fighter-like performance and modern avionics. Additionally, the Insitu ScanEagle Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) uncrewed aircraft system, known for its small operational footprint, maximum endurance, and payload capability, was showcased. KC-46A, recognised as the world’s most advanced multi-mission aerial refuelling aircraft, was also showcased.

Boeing showcased its sustainment capabilities, encompassing digital aviation solutions, parts and distribution services and much more. It demonstrated the differentiators of its Next Generation Product Support, which is proving to be an optimal option for air forces that want to leverage Performance Based Logistics to maximise mission readiness and reduce life-cycle costs.

DIMDEX marked significant milestones, underscoring Boeing’s enduring partnership with Qatar. The C-17 Globemaster III airlifters, serving the Qatar Emiri Air Force for 15 years, have been instrumental in numerous humanitarian missions worldwide.

Since 2008, Qatar stands as the first Gulf Cooperation Council nation to operate the C-17 Globemaster III. Boeing’s support, exemplified by the recent renewal of the global sustainment support programme for Qatar’s C-17 fleet, reaffirms the company’s commitment to enhancing mission capabilities in collaboration with Qatar.
