EXPAL Demonstrates Power of Dual-EIMOS Mortar Systems

Spain’s EXPAL recently highlighted its new development of the on-board Mortar system on Light Vehicle, Dual-EIMOS, through a demonstration that took place at the Retín Training Field in Cádiz.
Two EXPAL mortar systems participated in the demonstration by different bodies of the Armed Forces that highlighted the ability of their professionals to exploit the interoperability of both systems: the new Dual-EIMOS version, operated by a Marine Infantry crew, and the EIMOS 2018 version, operated by the Legion Brigade.

The new Dual-EIMOS is an 81mm on-board mortar on a highly mobile 4x4 light tactical vehicle (LTV) with deep fording capability, automatic fire control and integrated with TALOS C2 System. It has been developed following the Navy’s Requirements and its versatility will be maintained also for terrestrial applications.

The company has promoted an evolution of the system to add major benefits for missions, among which are:
• Its robustness and survivability, with the capacity for deep fording of up to 1.5m without preparation on the VAMTAC ST5 platform of the Marine Corps.
• Versatility and speed in operation thanks to 360º pointing without changing the position or orientation of the vehicle, and without the deployment of additional elements, allowing high shoot & scoot capacity.
• Increased pointing precision and integration of the latest generation INU and by means of the stress absorption system integrated into the vehicle.
• Interoperability through the command and control system.

Directed at the highest level of the Spanish Ministry of Defence and equipped with the strictest prevention and security measures in the context of COVID-19, the demonstration programme  was attended by officials such as the Chief of Staff of the Navy (AJEMA), the Lieutenant General Chief of Logistic Support Command (JEMALE) and the Commandant General of the Marine Corps (COMGEIM).

Alberto Fernández Cuervo, Product Manager of the EXPAL Systems, explained: “The deep fording capacity that Dual-EIMOS has acquired, the main singularity of the system, has been extensively tested during the programme’s test plan, including the latest successful results during it’s disembarking on the beach.”

The Dual-EIMOS is a system developed from EIMOS 2018, within the framework of an R&D Programme with the SDGPLATIN (DGAM) that has allowed the development of a system tailored to the Navy’s General Staff Requirements, with important improvements in aspects such as its versatility and precision.

It is pertinent to note that until now, there has been  no on-board mortar system with deep fording capability on the market globally.

EXPAL is a leader of the ammunition and explosives sector in Spain, as well as one of the main providers of demilitarisation and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) services worldwide.
