Finnish Navy Modernises Hamina-class Vessels

In a significant development, the modernisation and Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) project for the Hamina-Class vessels of the Finnish Navy has received its final approval.

The Finnish Defence Forces, in collaboration with Patria, formalised a contract in 2018 for the comprehensive modernisation and mid-life upgrade of four vessels. Throughout the duration of the project, Patria has served as the primary contractor, designer, and lead system integrator.

This initiative has equipped the Finnish Navy with enhanced capabilities, empowering them to effectively counter maritime threats. The upgraded vessels are now well-equipped to repel attacks at sea, safeguard sea lines of communication, and monitor and secure territorial integrity.

Coastal Defence
The craft have been up-armed with four Israeli Gabriel V antiship missiles, known as PTO-2020 in Finnish service. These large 2,756-pound missiles are fitted in a covered launcher and replace the Robot System (RBS)-15 missiles previously carried. The Gabriel V/PTO-2020 can engage enemy ships or land targets more than 100 nautical miles away. A maximum range of up to 216 nautical miles (nm) has been reported.

The Haminas’ antisubmarine capabilities have been boosted with the addition of a Kongsberg ST-2400 variable-depth sonar. A 400-mm torpedo launcher was added on the starboard side near the ship’s stern for employment of Saab Type 45 lightweight torpedoes or the more advanced Type 47 torpedo.

These nimble torpedoes are capable of targeting both enemy submarines and surface ships. To balance the increased weight, the class has been equipped with a 40-mm Bofors Mk 4 multipurpose gun, replacing the larger 57-mm Bofors L/70 Mk 3.

The modernisation programme also adds a Saab Trackfire remote weapon and sensor station capable of operating with a 12.7-mm or 7.62-mm machine gun.
Saab’s 9LV combat management system was installed as part of the overhaul, but the defensive armament remains mostly unchanged. This includes Multi-Ammunition Softkill System decoy launchers and eight Denel Umkhonto surface-to-air missiles carried in vertical launch system (VLS) cells.

Stealth Design
Right from the beginning, these covert missile patrol craft have integrated numerous measures to reduce their signatures, including modern shaping designs and a composite superstructure coated in radar-absorbent materials. The vessels feature specialised engineering mountings to minimise radiated noise, and their exhaust systems can be ducted through seawater or directed upward, effectively reducing infrared or acoustic signatures.

The Hamina class, which has also been known as the Rauma 2000 class, was built by Finland’s Aker Finnyards in Rauma. Each ship displaces 268 tonnes fully loaded and measures 167 feet long, with a 28-foot beam and a seven-foot draft. Crew size is 20–29 personnel. Propulsion is provided by two diesel engines powering two waterjets.

This enables a top speed of 32 knots and a range of 500 nm when operating at 30 knots. The current plans call for the modernised warships to remain in service well into the 2030s.

Enhanced with a new torpedo and surface-to-surface missile system, along with upgrades to the surface-to-air missile system, these vessels now possess the capability to engage targets in the air, on the surface, and underwater.

Training Target System
Introducing new capabilities, Patria has provided an innovative training target system based on Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs). This system enables flexible and highly cost-effective anti-submarine warfare training.

“Due to the changed security situation, it is important now and in the future that the domestic industry has crucial know-how related to the critical systems and technologies of national defence. Finland should be proud as it has maintained its capabilities even in times when many European countries were neglecting the development of their defence capabilities and materiel procurements,” explained Esa Rautalinko, Patria’s President and CEO.

“The MLU project strengthens Patria’s position as a leading system integrator in the Finnish defence industry and as an expert in various areas of lifecycle management. The mid-life upgrade has also had a significant impact on employment in the country — around 300 person-years of work,” commented Jussi Järvinen, EVP of Patria Finland Division.

Patria successfully delivered the initial vessel, Tornio, to the Finnish Navy in 2020, and the final modernised vessel, Pori, in 2022. Following the deliveries, comprehensive sea acceptance tests were conducted for each vessel. Together with the upcoming Pohjanmaa-Class corvettes, the Hamina-Class vessels form the backbone of the Finnish Navy’s naval operational capability throughout the 2030s.
