GKN, Safran Seal Decade-Long Deal for LEAP Engines

GKN Aerospace has solidified its long-standing partnership with engine manufacturer Safran by signing a 10-year agreement to expand its support for the LEAP engines.

The contract focuses on the production of new shafts and spare parts for the Leap 1A variant used in Airbus A320neo aircraft, with the potential to include similar components for the LEAP 1B powering Boeing 737-MAX jets in the future.

Enhanced Performance
Engineered to meet the imperative of decarbonising air transportation, the LEAP-1A engine offers operators of the A320neo enhanced performance with a remarkable 15 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to previous generations.

It also achieves up to a 50 per cent reduction in NOx emissions, aligning with stringent environmental standards, while maintaining compliance with noise regulations.

These achievements are made possible by innovative technologies and materials, including a 3D woven composite material and patented resin transfer molding process for lighter, stronger fan blades.

The use of an innovative titanium-aluminide alloy for low-pressure turbine blades and ceramic matrix composite materials for turbine rings and blades further enhances durability and performance.

Additionally, fuel injectors are fabricated using 3D printing technology. Together, these advancements signify a significant leap forward in efficiency and sustainability for air transport propulsion.

Under this contract, GKN Aerospace will provide substantial support to Safran to meet its anticipated future demand, initiating new shaft production at GKN Aerospace’s esteemed global centre of excellence in Kongsberg, Norway.

The first shafts are expected to be delivered from GKN Norway to Paris in the second half of 2024.

Long-Term Partnerships
GKN Aerospace and Safran have worked together closely for more than 35 years, with long-term partnerships in place for the CFM56 and GE90 engines, as well as on the RISE technology development programme.

Alexander Andersson, Senior Vice President of GKN Aerospace’s Engines business, said: “This is a significant agreement and another milestone in our partnership with Safran.  The LEAP is at the forefront of the industry and we are proud to increase our presence on the engine today, while continuing to explore new technology development for the next-generation RISE engine.”

Dominique Dupuy, Senior Vice President, Purchasing for Safran Aircraft Engines, noted: “We are satisfied with our partnership with GKN, which began several decades ago and continues with the manufacture of rotating parts for the LEAP programmes.”

Over 5,000 LEAP engines are in service, with 10,000 more on order, making it the fastest-growing engine in commercial aviation history.
