Patria-Finland Pact Strengthens F-35 Supremacy

Patria and the Finnish Defence Forces have inked a service agreement, heralding a new era for Finland’s F-35 programme. The agreement promises to fortify the programme’s capabilities, ensuring top-notch industrial participation in managing the F-35 solution’s critical maintenance know-how and technology, even during emergencies.

The direct employment surge for Patria from 2023 to 2031 is anticipated to soar, creating 600 person-years of opportunities. These employment waves are set to echo throughout Finland, creating a legacy that extends well into the 2040s.

Domestic industry plays a crucial role in meeting the F-35 programme’s industrial participation and supply security needs.

These capabilities hinge on agreements between the Finnish Ministry of Defence and Lockheed Martin, as well as the Ministry of Defence and Pratt & Whitney. These agreements mandate both companies to fulfil industrial participation obligations within a decade of signing.

“This F-35 service agreement between Patria and the Finnish Defence Forces is another step forward for the entire Finnish F-35 programme and Patria. The Finnish Defence Forces will receive national solution for F-35 maintenance and service capabilities, which are significant for Finland’s security of supply. The agreement creates the basis for Patria for competence development towards a new generation system,” explained Petri Hepola, Chief Programme Officer, F-35 at Patria.

The primary industrial cooperation projects for Patria include the large-scale assembly of F-35 front fuselages in Finland also for international users and further production of structural components.

Patria will also establish assembly projects with Pratt & Whitney for the F135 engines powering the Finnish F-35s.

Stealth Capabilities
The F-35 stands strong in safeguarding Finnish airspace against threats. Its stealth capabilities allow pilots to navigate undetected, execute missions, and return safely. With an integrated airframe design and cutting-edge materials, the F-35 outshines 4th Generation aircraft in Finland’s unique conditions.

Moreover, boasting the most robust integrated sensor package in fighter aircraft history, the F-35 relays real-time data to commanders across air, sea, and land.

The Distributed Aperture System (DAS) streams high-resolution imagery from six jet-mounted cameras to the pilot’s helmet via the Helmet Mounted Display (HMD), offering critical mission data.

Advanced electronic warfare features empower the F-35 to pinpoint threats, disrupt attacks, and jam radio frequencies with unparalleled precision. Its electronically scanned array (AESA) radars wield sophisticated electronic attack capabilities, enabling operations in hostile environments while neutralizing threatening radars.

The F-35 excels in stand-off jamming, delivering tenfold the power of legacy fighters, and can execute close-proximity jamming (stand-in) with unmatched potency.

Cost-Efficient 5th Gen
The F-35 boasts 5th generation capabilities at a cost comparable to 4th generation fighters. In October 2019, the U.S. Department of Defence and Lockheed Martin sealed a US$34 billion deal for 478 F-35s, marking the programme’s most cost-efficient aircraft pricing to date. This agreement not only met but exceeded cost reduction targets for each variant.

Aligned with its U.S. and international partners, Lockheed Martin places a strong emphasis on F-35 affordability in both production and maintenance. The company says it remains dedicated to delivering unparalleled F-35 capabilities at a cost comparable to legacy aircraft.

Since 2015, the company has reduced its share of the sustainment cost per flight hour by an impressive 45 per cent and aims for an additional 40 per cent reduction by 2025.

Crisis Preparedness
In the scope of the HX Programme, Security of Supply (SoS) embodies the cornerstone of ensuring sovereign capability and uninterrupted sustenance for the HX weapon system during potential crises. This critical capability is cultivated and upheld across all organisational echelons during peacetime.

At the national level, SoS is fortified by establishing pivotal maintenance capacities within Finland and determining the requisite stockpile of materials within the country’s borders.

The essence lies in possessing technological expertise and the autonomy to make airworthiness judgments independently, a pivotal factor in achieving the necessary level of SoS.

Moreover, this approach secures an adequate reservoir of skilled personnel, imperative for decentralised operations during tumultuous times.
The F-35 is designed to be updated as technology progresses, and the threat environment evolves.

With an anticipated service tenure extending until the 2070s, the F-35 ensures Finland’s security for decades to come.
