£1.8b Thales Deal to Boost UK Ship Availability

The UK Ministry of Defence has announced a new GBP1.8 billion, 15-year contract with Thales to enhance Royal Navy (RN) ship availability and resilience. This contract addresses the growing demand for extended active duty of Royal Navy platforms due to increasing global instability.

The contract, Maritime Sensor Enhancement Team (MSET), will sharpen the focus on equipment availability, predicting problems — through AI innovations and data management —rather than reacting when they emerge.

The contract will bolster more than 450 highly skilled engineering, IT, and support jobs based in the UK, while creating numerous apprenticeship and training opportunities.

Significant Transition
During the MSET contract, the Royal Navy will undergo a significant transition with new platforms and autonomous systems. MSET, a scalable service model, provides enhanced stability and support during this period.

Investments in dockland facilities, Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analysis tools, and skills aim to increase resilience for RN platforms. The contract aims for an average reduction of 100 days in Turn Around Times per repair, a 44-day decrease in spares lead times, and a 10 per cent improvement in reliability.

Data Driven Decision making will enable MSET to see beyond the current support horizons and with the increased investment in emerging technologies, including AI, virtual reality and Big Data, create a more proactive and predictive maintenance regime.

Naval Infrastructure Boost
Investments will focus on enhancing facilities at HMNB Devonport, Faslane, Portsmouth, and Bahrain to establish an advanced test and repair capability.

This will enable specialised technical and engineering skills at the waterfront to directly support the Royal Navy. The initiative is set to create 450 high-skilled jobs across the UK, facilitating the training of hundreds of apprentices in vital engineering skills within various local communities.

“This £1.8 Billion contract with Thales will help keep more Royal Navy ships at sea for longer,” stated Alex Cresswell, Chairman and CEO of Thales in the UK. “Data Driven decision making enables MSET to go beyond the current support horizons and make a substantial improvement in the availability and resilience of the Royal Navy whist preparing for AUKUS, the landmark security and defence partnership between Australia, US and UK.”

He added: “This will be the third generation of Thales apprentices, engineers and support staff helping to keep the Royal Navy at sea in an increasingly unstable world.” .
