All Eyes on an Exciting Future As Intersec 2018 Concludes

The 20th edition of Intersec concluded in Dubai on January 21-23, organised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Dozens of product launches shared the stage with live demonstrations of fire protection equipment and drones to keep thousands of buyers and industry professionals informed and entertained.

The world’s leading trade fair for security safety and fire protection featured 1,337 exhibitors from 59 countries, with 29,532 visitors gracing the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Intersec 2018 had access to a larger market offering innovative solutions to every vertical industry, with numerous new exhibitors covering 7 vast product categories: Commercial Security; Fire & Rescue; Safety & Health; Homeland Security & Policing; Information & Cyber Security; Smart Home & Building Automation; and Physical & Perimeter Security.

In addition to covering the latest trends in artificial intelligence and robotics in policing societies, Intersec presented a series of major projects fuelling growth in the Middle East commercial security landscape. The 2018 Aritificial Intelligence and Drones Conferences were also hosted in Dubai for the first time, along with the returning Middle East Security and Fire Protection Conferences, featuring 25 government representatives and regional regulators from the USA, Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

Global Exhibition Representation
For the first time, Russia joined the other 15 country pavilions of Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and USA. Then, as an international industry leader in video imaging expertise and innovative technology, Panasonic showcased a comprehensive line-up of intelligent analog, hybrid and IP video surveillance solutions.

Headline returning exhibitors in 2018 included Pelco by Schneider Electric, Teleste, Corodex, Dafoos Fire Protection, Siemens, Zener Electronics, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), Technoalarm, Kidde Fire Protection, Kidde International and Vicon Industries.

Visitors gave strong reports, as Fahad Al Qahtani of ILT Total Access Control can attest: “Intersec makes it much easier for us to see the relevant suppliers and manufacturers in one place at one time.”

Waleed Al-Mansour, Executive Manager for Security & Safety Corp in Saudi Arabia confirmed: “Intersec is a great opportunity to know what the latest updates in the security, safety, and firefighting business. Every year it adds more to my knowledge in the development of systems relating to security, fire protection and CCTV.”

Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, was happy to conclude: “Intersec 2018 has further cemented its position as the world’s premier trade platform for security, safety and fire protection industries. We’ve had participation from the majority of the world’s foremost safety and security brands. Twenty years is a landmark for both Intersec and the region’s standing as a major global security market.”

Smarter AI Technologies
As one of Intersec’s long-standing government partners, the Dubai Police’s stand had a strong focus on artificial intelligence and smarter technologies, exhibiting alongside the Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Police Academy, the Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA), and for the first time, the Dubai Municipality.

Intersec 2018 showcased Robocop prototypes and new smart services already in place in Dubai’s fully automated smart police station since September 2017. Dubai Police’s Director General of Artificial Intelligence, Brig. Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi explained:

“The Dubai Police aims to be the smartest police force in the world. We plan to use AI to help us not only reduce crimes, but increase our ability to predict potential crimes before they happen, along with reducing traffic accidents. Working with UAE car manufacturers, we’ll install sensors to study the behaviour of drivers and see how we can teach them the best way to drive. Vehicles will instruct police where they should cover based on data and perhaps where there is crime.”

Dubai Police plans to open another eight Smart Police Stations in 2018. Al Razooqi recognizes that AI/robots will take over more routine daily jobs without reducing ‘human manpower’: “There have been rumours that, due to AI and robotics at Dubai Police, that there will be less police officers, but this is not true. We’re going to create more advanced positions, where they can provide a better service to keep our residents and visitors safe.”

2018 Show Highlights
Over the years, Intersec has proved to be a valuable business platform for global leaders and industry start-ups. Korean exhibitor IDIS has watched its Middle Eastern business grow significantly as a result of contacts established during the show.  “We’ve expanded our partner network due to the success of exhibiting at Intersec from 2015 to 2017,” said Harry Kwon, General Manager for IDIS in the Middle East and North Africa. “We’ve established new end-user customers and struck up strategic partnerships such as with G4S in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, with a number of projects now complete or underway.”

NAFFCO, Bristol & Nedaa
The UAE was the second-largest exhibitor country this year, with 223 exhibitors covering 10,500sqm - a six percent increase on last year. NAFFCO, Intersec’s founding sponsor, covered a record 1,700sqm of the Dubai World Trade Centre to showcase their vast range of UAE-made firefighting equipment, protection systems, trucks and vehicles.

Bristol, the Dubai-based leader in fire protection services and equipment, unveiled the Low-Pressure Water Mist Fire Suppression System - an innovative new system that extinguishes flames while protecting the surrounding environment from water damage. The distinguishing feature of Bristol’s low-cost dual-fluid technology is its atomization of liquids into extremely small droplets at very low pressure to carry them on an air stream deployed as a portable hose reel device.

The firm also launched two new products from Bristol’s vehicles manufacturing division. The Mobile Ambulance Vehicle drives straight into the future with next-generation keypad control panels strategically placed for safe access and fire-retardant materials for extreme hazard. The FL60XR Sky-Lift Unit is the highest aerial platform in the world, with laddered horizontal outreach of 31.5 meters, a maximum rescue cage load of 500kg and top vertical height of 60 metres at a transportation length of less than 12 meters.

Finally, Nedaa Professional Communication Corporation is the secure networks provider of the Dubai Government with a range of innovative solutions designed for today’s smart, sustainable cities. Nedaa’s pavilion hosted strategic partners specializing in telecommunication solutions presented through Nedaa’s 4G network: Airbus, Nokia, Esharah Etisalat Security Solutions and Al Marakeb Manufacturing Boats.

New Drone Zone
Intersec 2018 debuted an indoor Drone Zone, where exhibitors like Dubai Police and the Dubai Civil Defence delivered live demonstrations of their latest drones and UAVs, alongside dedicated conferences on Drones and Artificial Intelligence.

Greg Agvent, Senior Director for CNN Aerial Imaging and Reporting, spoke about potential uses for drones as important tools for data capture as well as conventional reporting:

“We’re still at the very beginning of acknowledging what drones can do. We’re working with video exclusively now, but looking forward to thermal imaging and forward-looking infrared to add new context and understanding to a story. We’re looking for other sensors covering search and rescue operations. For example, if we’re doing a story on drought, can we put a hygrometer on a drone and create data that supports the video story? ”

Finally, Nedaa demonstrated the use of LTE-connected drones for efficiency in first responder rescue operations. They demonstrated how drones can help in real-time road and traffic monitoring through Nedaa’s private LTE network.

Smart Home Pavilion
More than 30 exhibitors showcased their latest home automation, security, access control, energy management systems and multimedia technologies in the dedicated Smart Home Pavilion.

Germany’s DoorBird was prominent in the fast-developing section, returning for only the second time to showcase the 2nd generation of its IP Video Door Station. DoorBird’s Key Account Manager, Pierre Dinnies, said the iteration was developed specifically to handle extreme Middle East conditions, enabling users to access their home’s video intercom via their mobile device and DoorBird App.

Germany’s Bird Home Automation  and Italian companies Videx Electronics, FDF, Ksenia Securit and AVS Electronics shared the stage at Intersec’s Smart Home and Building Automation section. First-time exhibitor Ksenia Security launched Lares 4.0, an IP-based integrated smart system where users can control through a single source the entire home eco-system.

Flavio Zarlenga, Sales and Marketing Director at Ksenia Security, presented the Lares 4.0, controlled at home with a mobile user interface or remotely via a dedicated mobile app. Fermax’s Brand Manager, Elena Ravello, said the company already has a strong presence in the Middle East.

AVS Electronics also debuted its new range of Raptor wireless home automation control panels with KNX/MODBUS interface for seamless operation. Meanwhile, Nuesmart exhibited its smart battery lock and CP Plus range of home automation solutions, including VOIP-based services.

Milestones Commercial Security
Commercial Security featured 483 exhibitors in 2018 as the largest show section, including two-thirds of the world’s top 50 providers of video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, analytics and video management software.

Danish company Milestones Systems showed why it is still a global leader in open platform video management software (VMS) for IP network-based video surveillance. Christian Ringler, Milestone Director DACH, Middle East and Africa, showcased the latest version of their video management software, XProtect, which covers the security needs of organisations of all shapes and sizes: “The XProtect platform delivers powerful surveillance that is easy to manage, reliable and proven in thousands of customer installations around the world.“
