HAL: Striving to Achieve Excellence
A premier aeronautical company in Asia with 20 production divisions and 11 R&D centres spread across seven states and nine geographical locations in India, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has so far designed and developed 17 types of aircraft/ helicopters.

“We are one of the largest aerospace companies in Asia, with an annual turnover of approximately US$3 billion,” Chairman and Managing Director R. Madhavan of the Indian aerospace and defence major told Nation Shield on the sidelines of the show.
“HAL’s manufacturing divisions are equipped with modern infrastructure for production of fighter aircraft, trainers, transport aircraft and helicopters. HAL has so far designed and developed 17 types of aircraft the latest being Hindustan Turbo Trainer (HTT)-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH),” he added.
Meanwhile, the Government of India has disinvested 10 per cent equity of HAL and the company got listed on BSE and NSE, underscoring its commercial viability.
Referring to HAL HTT-40 Basic Trainer under trial, he said HAL has 70 orders at present. Indian Air Force, HAL’s biggest client, eventually would require 106 trainers. It can also be armed and used as a light attack aircraft.
HAL’s expertise encompasses design, production, repair, overhaul, and upgrade of aircraft, helicopters, aero engines, accessories, avionics and systems.
Madhavan said the company is, “committed to continuous improvement of all our activities.We will supply products and services that conform to highest standards of design, manufacture, reliability, maintainability and fitness for use as desired by our customers.
We are looking to develop indigenous capability in all defence related fields.”
He stressed: “HAL also believes in striving for improvement in every activity involved in our business by pursuing and encouraging risk taking, experimentation and learning at all levels within the company with a view to achieving excellence and competitiveness.”
Madhavan said he was attending the Dubai Airshow for the first time and was impressed by the scale of the exhibition. “We will definitely bring more of our partners and suppliers next time. In the future, you will see more participation from us,” he concluded.
