ALAKRAN VMIMS Highlights Innovation in Parade Spotlight

In a display of firepower and innovation, the Indian Army unveiled its newest weapon, the ALAKRAN (Scorpion) Vehicle Mounted Infantry Mortar System (VMIMS), during the 75th Republic Day parade in New Delhi.
Following a collaboration between Milanion NTGS and India’s Mahindra Defence, the latter has been awarded an initial contract to supply the Indian Army with an undisclosed number of units of the 81mm ALAKRAN VMIMS, integrated onto Mahindra’s Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV).

The spotlight at the event shone on the ALAKRAN VMIMS, a testament to the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defence capabilities. The vehicle-mounted infantry mortar system stands as a testament to India’s determination to foster domestic innovation.

The contract award to Mahindra followed a previously inked teaming agreement between the two organisations, to explore strategic opportunities under the ‘Made in India’ initiative to manufacture, supply and fulfil the need for the VMIMS.

Expected to be operational by the last quarter of 2024, the System is set to significantly enhance the mobility and indirect fire capabilities of vehicles supporting mechanised battalions in the Indian Army.

Armed with advanced technology, the ALAKRAN VMIMS promises precision and increased firepower, bolstering the operational effectiveness of mechanised units. As the delivery timeline approaches, the armed forces are preparing for its seamless incorporation into their fleet, empowering them with a more versatile and agile force.

It is an effective, combat-proven system providing superior mobility, accuracy, speed, and high firepower on the battlefield. It is the world’s lightest, fully digital, automated mortar system, designed from the ground up for shoot and scoot combat operations.

Striking Feature
Another key feature of the VMIMS is its remarkable capability to accurately launch eight rounds in under two minutes, swiftly transitioning from park to depart, thus minimising vulnerability to enemy counter-battery fire.

With its automatic aiming and re-aiming functions, it seamlessly delivers 81/120 mm mortar capabilities while effectively transmitting recoil force to the ground. This innovative design addresses operational challenges encountered by conventional mortar carriers, enhancing the system’s overall efficiency on the battlefield.

The VMIMS stands out not only for its advanced capabilities but also for its user-friendly features, making it easily integrable onto almost any 4x4 vehicle with a minimum two-tonne payload. This adaptability ensures a wide range of vehicles can be equipped with this advanced mortar system, enhancing the versatility of the armed forces.

One of the system’s notable strengths lies in its adaptability to various terrains, including deserts, mud, snow, and forests. This feature makes it a reliable asset in diverse operational environments, providing the military with flexibility and manoeuvrability across different landscapes.

Seamless Integration
Moreover, the lightweight not only facilitates seamless integration onto vehicles but also makes it heliborne-capable. This attribute adds an extra layer of operational flexibility, allowing for rapid deployment and mobility in scenarios where air transport is advantageous.

The robust design, coupled with resilient technologies, contributes to its reputation as a durable weapon system. Proven to withstand the rigours of combat, this mortar system remains effective in challenging and dynamic battlefield conditions.

In short, the combination of adaptability, lightweight design, and durability positions the VMIMS as a reliable and effective asset, meeting the demands of modern military operations.

Milanion NTGS CEO, Julio Estrella, said: “We are honoured the Indian Army is showcasing ALAKRAN VMIMS at such a prestigious celebration for the country and look forward to further expanding on our long-term commitment to the Indian Defence sector through the ‘Made in India’ initiative.”
