Artis, Bin Hilal Create Sentinel Shield for Military Vehicles
Artis, LLC and Bin Hilal Enterprises, LLC (BHE) have announced plans to form a joint venture to provide the Sentinel All-Threat Defeat System, also known internationally as the Improved Iron Curtain (I2C), an active protection system for military vehicle fleets.
The joint venture will offer original equipment manufacturing, engineering services, lifecycle support, spare parts, field services, warranty support, and training.
The announcement was made during the signing of a memorandum of understanding at Artis’ booth at the recent Eurosatory defence conference in Paris.
The joint venture will meld the extensive active protection experience of Artis with the business and cultural acumen of BHE. Immediate efforts will focus on providing cooperation and support to deliver the Sentinel system to local and regional allies.
By combining Artis’ technical expertise with BHE’s strategic insights, the partnership aims to enhance the defence capabilities of military vehicle fleets, ensuring comprehensive lifecycle support from manufacturing to field services and training.
“Sentinel is a third-generation APS, and is the most advanced system in the world. It is the only active protection system that can protect against all threats, including providing top-attack protection from a swarm of drones,” stated Artis CEO Keith Brendley. “It also mitigates tank-fired sabot rounds and other kinetic and fuzed threats. The MOU represents a critical component of our international growth strategy and directly supports our commitment to the UAE,” he said.
BHE Vice Chairman Humaid S. Al Dhaheri added: “BHE has had a long and successful relationship with Artis. We are proud to take this relationship to the next level and announce our intent to form our Joint Venture.”
Fortified Vehicle Protection
Sentinel represents a third-generation Active Protection System (APS), renowned for providing superior protection to military vehicles and ground infrastructure worldwide.
Developed by Artis, the Sentinel APS offers advanced defence capabilities against various threats, including Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs), recoilless rifle rounds, and loitering threats like drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) armed with munitions. It is equipped to intercept kinetic rounds fired from tanks and other sources.
It is a digitally driven system that can swiftly defend against new threats that proliferate on the battlefield, usually with just a software upgrade. This capability increases warfighter safety and mission success, and reduces life-cycle costs.
Its modular design means militaries can put the A-Kit, which consists of mounting brackets and cables, on all their ground vehicles — including main battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, troop carriers and others — and easily install the Sentinel B-Kit on vehicles when they are headed to harm’s way.
The system can be installed independently or complement other vehicle protection systems, such as Explosive Reactive Amour (ERA).
Safety is key to its design, and its use of dual sensors essentially eliminates the risk of false alarms, and consequently false firing. The system’s use of extremely high-speed sensing and parallel processing help to intercept and destroy a multitude of threats close to the vehicle, affording the highest level of protection with the least collateral damage, keeping vehicle occupants, dismounted troops and civilians safe.
Proven Platform Integration
The system can integrate with any ground vehicle, including tracked or wheeled platforms, and fixed sites like buildings and infrastructure. It builds on previous Artis systems installed and tested on vehicles like the Stryker, Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV), M-ATV, and High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (Humvee).
Sentinel, made in the U.S., offers affordability, advanced radar queueing capabilities, new optical sensors for improved target recognition, enhanced and more lethal countermeasures, redesigned digital architecture providing expansive protection and adaptability to future threats, exceptionally extensive multi-shot capability, all-weather protection against a broad array of threats, system modularity including compatibility with the U.S. Army’s Vehicle Base Kit, ruggedised and dependable solid-state components with built-in test capability, and smart, low-cost lifecycle sustainment costs.
Artis, headquartered in Herndon, specialises in active protection and sensing technologies for military and commercial applications.
Bin Hilal Enterprises, a family-owned business, has attained TRACE certification, underscoring its dedication to ethical business practices and anti-bribery measures. This certification reinforces its commitment to transparency and aligns with its strategy to collaborate with international partners on intricate projects within the GCC and local markets.
