CAE Teams Up with GA-ASI on SkyGuardian Project
CAE Defense & Security has secured a contract to support Canada’s fleet of MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones. Awarded by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), the deal is valued at a minimum of US$250 million over an initial nine years, with potential extensions.
This comprehensive agreement goes beyond basic aircraft sales. CAE will provide essential training for aircrews and maintenance technicians, equipping them with the skills to operate and maintain these advanced drones.
CAE will also deliver training devices and courseware, ensuring the Royal Canadian Air Force has the resources needed to fully utilise the SkyGuardian’s capabilities.
RPAS Support Solutions
The agreement includes broader In-Service Support (ISS) capabilities, including aircraft maintenance, IT and cybersecurity at the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) operating sites, and publications management. CAE will leverage comprehensive maintenance and support solutions to support the RPAS capability across multiple domains.
Marc Parent, CAE’s President and Chief Executive Officer, explained: “Our long-standing collaboration with GA-ASI delivers best-in-class training technologies, systems, and services to Canada’s Armed Forces with critical devices and support to enable intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance (ISR) operations.”
The MQ-9B SkyGuardian is designed to integrate seamlessly into Canada’s domestic and continental defence missions under North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). It ensures interoperability with Canada’s closest allies, such as the Five Eyes Alliance (FVEY) and NATO. This integration supports the effective coordination of Canadian defence, civil aviation, and ground assets, both now and in the future.
GA-ASI President, David R. Alexander, noted: “We’ve enjoyed a long-standing industry partnership with the SkyGuardian and Predator Mission Trainers, which have become important training tools for preparing RPAS crews. Together, we will ensure that the Canadian Armed Forces are well equipped for their RPAS Programme.”
Innovation Partnership
As a member of Team SkyGuardian Canada, CAE is collaborating with GA-ASI and a coalition of leading Canadian businesses on the development, delivery, and sustainment of the MQ-9B. Canada’s investment in the RPAS Project underscores its commitment to advancing cutting-edge RPAS technologies, reflecting its strong domestic interest in the field.
“This contract is an excellent example of how Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy can be leveraged through defence procurement to support Canadian businesses. This represents more than just another demonstration of CAE’s leadership in the defence and aerospace sector; it will also drive Canadian innovation, generate high-value jobs, and bolster economic growth in Canada,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
