E-99M Fortifies Brazil’s Air Defence Network

Embraer has supplied the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) with its fifth EMB 145 AEW&C aircraft, now designated as E-99M. This upgraded aircraft is tailored for Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) roles, along with intelligence, surveillance, and airborne reconnaissance missions.

Utilising the ERJ 145 regional jet platform, the FAB’s E-99 excels in detecting, tracking, and identifying targets within its coverage zone. It transmits information via Data Link and carries out missions including airspace surveillance, interception control, electronic intelligence, and border monitoring.

Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, said: “The delivery of the fifth E-99 is an important milestone for the E-99M project. This is the first aircraft delivered in FOC (Full Operational Capability) configuration, with systems fully certified for use by the Brazilian Air Force for protecting the country and its national sovereignty. The four aircraft previously delivered will be upgraded so that they can fully perform all the missions for which they were designed.”

Advanced Systems
The E-99M aircraft boasts an enhanced Erieye Radar and Command & Control (C2) systems. It integrates new Electronic Warfare (Non-Communication - NCOM) systems, an updated Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Transponder, seven software-defined V/UHF radios, a Mission Audio system utilising Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, and an advanced Mission Audio and Data recorder. Its Data Link function has been adapted to a new architecture.

The interior has been revamped to enhance crew comfort and augment operational capacity, featuring five redesigned consoles optimised for efficient use of the upgraded systems.

The E-99M project is led by the Combat Aircraft Programme Coordinating Committee (COPAC) together with Embraer and international suppliers such as SAAB, Aeroelectronica International (AELI), and Rohde & Schwarz.

Atech, a subsidiary of Embraer, is participating in the project by developing part of the command-and-control system, as well as six mission planning and analysis stations which will provide training and development opportunities for the crews.

Enduring Defender
Due to its ability to sustain long-endurance patrols while also possessing a high dash speed, the EMB-145 significantly enhances its survivability during various missions.
The EMB-145 airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) crew comprises the pilot, co-pilot, a team of five mission systems specialists, and accommodates up to three reserve crew members. The aircraft is outfitted with a complement of five to six mission operator consoles, facilitating comprehensive operational control and flexibility.
