Hensoldt’s Dynahawk Sights Win Key German Contract

German defence technology firm Hensoldt has won a major contract from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for the delivery of its advanced Dynahawk fire control sights (FLV).

The agreement, valued in the multi-million euro range, covers deliveries in 2024 and 2025, with an option for additional systems in 2026.

The company has a track record of supplying fire control sights in previous years.

Josef Reif, Sales Manager in the Sights division, stated: “With the Dynahawk, we are significantly increasing the first-hit probability on dynamic and distant targets of the deployed anti-tank weapons. Thanks to the FLV in conjunction with the Hensoldt Infrared Vision-Multi-Rail (IRV-MR) night vision attachment, we can also guarantee operational capability at night.”

Enhanced Target Accuracy
The Dynahawk has a 5.5x glass optical magnification and a laser rangefinder. The ballistics computer of the fire control sight, which is furnished with sensors for environmental perception (temperature, air pressure, angular rate sensor), has numerous modes for engaging static and dynamic targets and automatically identifies the loaded ammunition and calculates the corresponding ballistics.

The FLV also has selection options for programming the firing point. This means that bursting or air-burst ammunition can also be used with precision.

The unique selling point of the FLV is its interoperability with the two weapon systems introduced into the Bundeswehr, the Wirkmittel 90 (DND RGW90) and the leichte Wirkmittel 1800+ (MBDA Enforcer). Both weapons can be fired without changes to the configuration of the Dynahawk.

Effective Infantry Toolkit
The Dynamit Nobel Defence (DND) RGW 90 family represents the superior infantry toolkit for navigating complex battlefields.

The system equips dismounted forces with a comprehensive array of shoulder-launched weapons, enabling them to control operational areas with better firepower and range.

The RGW 90’s effectors are designed to tackle various types of threats, adaptable to any operational scenario and resilient against diverse environmental conditions.

The MBDA Enforcer delivers low-collateral precision capabilities against lightly armoured static and moving targets, including those behind cover, and at long ranges in urban environments.

Developed through a multinational effort, the Enforcer will enhance the German Armed Forces’ Wirkmittel 90 capability. MBDA is finalising qualification and gearing up for series production. Its modular design allows for future development, including a potential ‘family’ of munitions for land, air, and sea.

Sighting Device Features
The Sighting Device with integrated Fire Control System (FCS) is developed for shoulder launched weapon systems, like the RGW 90 family system. It is equipped with a laser rangefinder, ballistics computer and an internal micro display with electronic reticle. It allows the shooter to engage a target with a high first-hit probability even at a range of up to 1,200 metres.

With an optical clip-on night-vision the system is also usable at night. The FCS is attached to the launcher within seconds and the menu-guided operation can be done by one person with no need for any further support. The gunner is able to measure the distance to the target and select the fuse mode.

The integrated FCS ballistics computer calculates offset and lead angle, automatically displaying the aiming mark. It identifies ammunition type and selects the appropriate menu when attached to the launcher. Even with a dead battery, the sighting device can aim and fire at shorter ranges using an etched reticle. It is also ready for use with guided missile systems for ranges up to 2,000 metres.

The gunner can engage targets behind cover using the weapon’s electronic interface, which supports an external video signal (seeker head camera) displayed on the internal screen for target identification and marking.

Hensoldt’s legacy in precision optics started with Carl Moritz Hensoldt’s innovations and has since evolved. The company offers a sensor portfolio that includes sights, fire control systems, night vision attachments, and thermal imagers.

Its sights provide full modularity and advanced customisation, with all optic devices sourced from a single provider. Designed to perform in any climate, these sights ensure clear vision in all conditions. The company supports global forces, including Germany’s “Soldier of the Future” programme and the Swedish Carl Gustav M4 launcher.
