Hungary Melds Defence & Healthcare as C-390 Takes Flight
Soaring high over Gavião Peixoto, Brazil, the first Hungarian C-390 Millennium successfully completed its maiden flight on February 9, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s air force. Embraer, the aircraft’s manufacturer, conducted a thorough four-hour assessment, paving the way for further testing and eventual service entry.
The Hungarian C-390s will be the first globally to boast an onboard Intensive Care Unit, enhancing their potential for humanitarian missions.
Hungary joins Brazil and Portugal as the third C-390 operator, with other nations like the Netherlands and South Korea also recognising the aircraft’s multi-mission prowess.
In November 2020, the Hungarian government signed a contract with Embraer to acquire two C-390s.
Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, expressed pride in collaborating with the Hungarian Defence Forces to enhance their capabilities. He stated, “This maiden flight is a major milestone for the Hungarian C-390 programme. The C-390 Millennium is receiving international recognition on the back of its remarkable operational performance and capabilities, and Embraer is ramping up production to address increasing market demand. It is an honour to work with the Hungarian Defence Forces in strengthening their capabilities with the best military airlift solution available.”
Multi-Mission Powerhouse
The C-390 is redefining military air transport and challenging the logic behind current and future generation platforms, offering multi-mission capability, reliability, and interoperability built by design.
It can carry more payload (26 tonnes) compared to other medium-sized military transport aircraft and flies faster (470 knots) and farther, being able to carry out a wide range of missions, such as transporting and launching cargo and troops, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting and humanitarian missions, even operating on unpaved runways, on surfaces such as compacted earth and gravel.
The KC-390 variant further expands its capabilities with aerial refuelling. It has already proven its capacity both as a tanker and as a receiver, in this case receiving fuel from another KC-390 using pods installed under the wings.
Having been in active service with the Brazilian Air Force since 2019 and more recently with the Portuguese Air Force in 2023, the aircraft has consistently demonstrated its capacity, reliability, and performance. The existing fleet of operational aircraft has amassed an impressive total of over 11,500 flight hours.
Notably, the C-390 boasts an operational availability of approximately 80 per cent, and its mission completion rates exceed an impressive 99 per cent, showcasing exceptional productivity within its category.
Singapore Airshow Spotlight
Embraer showcased its expanding presence at the Singapore Airshow 2024, held from February 20 to 25. The event featured the C-390 Millennium, Praetor 600, and E195-E2 with the ‘Tech Eagle’ livery.
Francisco Gomes Neto, Embraer’s CEO, expressed enthusiasm, saying, “Our presence in Asia Pacific is growing.”
A notable highlight was the debut of the C-390 Millennium, recently selected by South Korea’s DAPA. The Praetor 600, known for its technological prowess, appeared in Singapore after delivery to South Korea’s Flight Inspection Centre in 2023.
Embraer’s E195-E2 returned with a ‘Tech Eagle’ livery, making an impact with significant regional orders, including Scoot, and doubled deliveries in 2023.
VR Flight Premiere
Eve Air Mobility, a newcomer, presented Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) solutions and Urban Air Traffic Management software. Eve’s full-size eVTOL cabin mockup marked its Asia Pacific premiere, offering visitors a unique Virtual Reality (VR) flight experience.
Singapore served as a strategic hub for Embraer’s Asia Pacific operations, complemented by its office in Beijing, China. The participation in the Singapore Airshow reflected Embraer’s commitment to engaging with the region’s aviation and defence communities, showcasing advanced aircraft.
