Navantia Delivers Final High-Tech Corvette to Saudi Navy

The Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) officially welcomed their fifth corvette, the HMS Unayzah, during a ceremony presided over by high-ranking officials. The technologically advanced vessel, built at Navantia’s Bay of Cádiz shipyard in Spain, marks the completion of the Al-Sarawat project.

In accordance with the terms of the contract, the handover took place at the King Faisal naval base in Jeddah.

Admiral Fahad Bin Abdullah Al-Ghofaily, Chief of Staff of the RSNF, indicated that HMS Unayzah was the fifth and last corvette of Al-Sarawat project to be delivered.

HMS Unayzah, as the rest of her class, was built to be one of the world’s most technologically advanced and powerful corvette to meet national mandates in realisation of Saudi vision 2030, possessing distinctive capabilities to handle multi-combat missions with high efficiency to enhance the combat readiness of the RSNF, to defend the strategic interests of the Kingdom, and to maintain maritime security in the region.

Defence Localisation
Admiral Al-Ghofaily highlighted the project’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s defence industry localisation goals. The role of Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) in integrating and developing defence capabilities onboard the HMS Unayzah within the Kingdom, along with successful combat systems trials and live firings, demonstrates significant progress. This achievement aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s strategy to localise over 50 per cent of its total military expenditure by 2030.

He also attributed a great deal of Al-Sarawat programme’s success to Navantia commitment and expressed his appreciation for Ricardo Dominguez, Chairman of Navantia, for the company’s achievements.

The corvette, HMS Unayzah (C550), was transported to Jeddah on a specialised vessel and underwent final construction and systems integration works, affirming Navantia’s technology transfer (ToT) and production localisation capabilities to the SAMI-Navantia joint venture.

Construction Milestones
HMS Unayzah, with a length of 104 metres and a beam of 14, accommodates a total of 102 individuals, including crew and passengers. The construction contract for five corvettes came into effect in November 2018. Since the launch of the first unit in July 2020, Navantia has consecutively launched all five units, with a four-month interval between each, achieving this milestone in a record time of three years. Deliveries are occurring just over three years after the first plate was cut for each ship.

The corvettes, based on the Avante 2200 design, tailored to RSNF requirements, boast advanced performance, sea-worthy excellence, high survivability, and operability in extreme temperatures. Simultaneously, approximately 700 crew members, engineers, and maintainers undergo education and training at Navantia Training Centre (NTC) in San Fernando.

In addition to the corvette contract, Navantia agreed with SAMI to create a joint venture in Saudi Arabia, an alliance that allows Navantia to position its integrated systems and technologically advanced solutions in the Arab market and area of influence and is aligned with the company’s internationalisation strategy.

Job Creation
The contract assumes a global workload of around seven million hours and 6,000 jobs over five years. Of these, more than 1,100 are direct employees, more than 1,800 collaborating industry employees (more than a hundred companies participate at the programme) and over 3,000 indirect employees generated by other suppliers.

The programme includes, in addition to construction, the Life Cycle Support for five years from the delivery of the first ship, with an option for another five additional years, the last ship of which must be delivered in 2024.

It includes the provision of various services, such as integrated logistics support, operational and maintenance training, provision of Education and Training Centres for the Combat System and Platform Control System of ships, Life Cycle Support, and ship maintenance systems at the Jeddah Naval Base.

Navantia Legacy
With over 300 years of shipbuilding heritage, Navantia stands as a state-owned defence technology leader in Spain. Specialising in surface and submarine shipbuilding, system design and integration, and lifecycle support, it employs nearly 4,000 individuals across Spain. Navantia also contributes to green energy initiatives through Navantia Seanergies. Committed to sustainability, it engages in responsible practices and fosters industrial collaboration.

The company holds contracts globally and collaborates with universities and technological centres.
