Rohde & Schwarz Plays Key Role in Modernising Brazilian Navy

Rohde & Schwarz was recently awarded a contract from the Águas Azuis Consortium to supply communications and intelligence suites for the Brazilian Navy’s Tamandaré Frigates Class programme.
Rohde & Schwarz will be responsible for the development, design, production, integration and acceptance of the external and internal communication suite and will supply communication electronic support measures (C-ESM).

The Águas Azuis Consortium, formed by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security and Atech, has been selected by the Brazilian Navy to construct four surface combatants based on the MEKO A100 design as part of the Tamandaré Frigates Class programme.

The Tamandaré class frigates will feature high combat power and be capable of countering multiple threats and protect maritime traffic and deny the use of the sea. The vessels will carry out defence missions of the Brazilian coast. In addition, they will be employed in the patrol of Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters, with an emphasis on the inspection and protection of economic activities, mainly oil and fisheries. All vessels will be built in Brazil with delivery scheduled between 2024 and 2029.

Rohde & Schwarz will provide the external communications architecture, the modern and fully IP-based integrated communications system (NAVICS) of the frigates, and cutting-edge antenna systems.

“Rohde & Schwarz already has systems installed onboard naval vessels (Baroso class) and with the air force. This means the current solution will extend joint interoperability in the Brazilian armed forces,” said Hansjörg Herrbold, Vice President Market Segment Navy Rohde & Schwarz. “An added value is that with Rohde & Schwarz Do Brazil we have a strong local base for engineering support, integration, services and maintenance – a solid footprint that enables local industrial partners to provide naval communications and intelligence system support.”

As a system integrator and manufacturer of all core components, Rohde & Schwarz delivers turnkey solutions. This leads to higher reliability, performance and efficiency. In addition to external communications, NAVICS provides onboard communications and ensures a multilevel security architecture that allows secure, trusted and tamper-proof communications, i.e., third parties will not be able to interfere with information exchange.

The company’s naval C-ESM passive sensor and antenna solutions enable the frigate to exploit the electromagnetic spectrum and adversary communications in order to counter conventional and asymmetric threats against their coastlines, national borders and logistics channels.
