Rosoboronexport Celebrates 20 Years of Cooperation with UAE
Twenty years ago, on November 4, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed a decree to establish JSC Rosoboronexport, the only state intermediary in Russia for the exports and imports of products, technologies and services of military and dual use. Since that time, the company has become an indispensable assistant for many countries in different regions of the world in modernising their Armed Forces, developing the military-industrial potential and strengthening national security in general.
The company operates under the industrial partnership scheme, invests in joint ventures and defence research, which makes the cooperation comprehensive. Rosoboronexport exports and imports not only military equipment for armed services, but also non-military security equipment and a broad range of high-tech commercial products. For example, this year, Rosoboronexport offered the global market cutting-edge equipment to fight dangerous epidemic diseases.
The UAE became one of the first members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, with which the Russian Federation began military-technical cooperation. From the very beginning, Russia supported the idea of the country’s leadership to organise IDEX in Abu Dhabi, which has become one of the most significant defence trade shows in the world. According to a company statement, Rosoboronexport is grateful to the UAE for the opportunity to showcase the latest achievements of the Russian military industry in Abu Dhabi, as well as at the Dubai Airshow.
Russian-Emirati Cooperation
Popular Russian military-grade products such as the TIGR 4x4 wheeled armoured vehicle (its counterpart in the UAE is Nimr) and the Pantsir air defence system, which is actively operated by the UAE, were shaped in their current form thanks to the cooperation between the two countries.
A significant project was the introduction of a large batch of BMP-3 infantry combat vehicles in the UAE. A high-tech centre for their maintenance and repair was established in the country. The UAE is the first and largest operator of vehicles of this type in the region. The BMP-3 has become one of the most popular Russian export products in the domain of armour. At present, work is underway to further improve the combat capabilities of the vehicle, with increasing the firepower, introducing the general digitalisation, and integrating into a C4I system being the main trends. For the successful mastering of the vehicle with new capabilities, modern comprehensive training programmes for crews and technical personnel, as well as modern digital technical training systems have been developed.
Against the background of the coronavirus pandemic, not only does Rosoboronexport fulfil all its obligations to customers, but also continues to regularly introduce to the world market new models of weapons and military equipment and broadens the practice of industrial partnership. Maintaining and expanding cooperation with the UAE, a traditional and reliable partner, is a top priority for Rosoboronexport.
