Rosoboronexport Offers Drone Production Abroad

In a move set to redefine the landscape of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), Rosoboronexport, a subsidiary of the Rostec State Corporation, has unveiled ambitious plans during the Sixth International Unmanned Systems Exhibition and Conference (UMEX 2024).

The company is actively pursuing the expansion of its footprint in the global Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) market, with a comprehensive offering that includes unmanned ground, aerial, and underwater vehicles.

Alexander Mikheev, Director General of Rosoboronexport, highlighted the company’s extensive presence in the global UAV market, covering unmanned ground, aerial, and underwater vehicles.

He expressed optimism about expanding the market reach by introducing reconnaissance & fire support robots, unmanned ammunition delivery, and casualty evacuation vehicles.

Notable Highlight
One of the notable highlights of the company’s recent endeavours is the promotion of the Klavesin-1RE autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle, designed for operations at sea. This addition to their arsenal has piqued the interest of global partners, particularly those with maritime capabilities.

UMEX 2024 provided Rosoboronexport with a platform to showcase its diverse range of unmanned systems. The company made presentations on various Russian UAVs, elucidating their capabilities and potential applications.

Mikheev highlighted the adaptability and upgradability of Russian UAVs, citing their real-world usage in high-intensity combat operations. The Orlan-10E, Orlan-30, and Orion-E UAVs, along with the Kub-E loitering munition, have demonstrated their capabilities, especially in the face of advanced air defence systems.

This adaptability serves as a competitive advantage for the company, as its UAVs are designed to evolve based on feedback from real combat scenarios.

Industrial Cooperation
A key focus for Rosoboronexport at UMEX was to explore collaboration opportunities in industrial cooperation. The company aims to facilitate the local production of drones on the customer’s premises, engage in joint research and development (R&D) initiatives, and establish high-tech service facilities for the repair and maintenance of unmanned systems.

The company’s representatives engaged in discussions with stakeholders from the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries, presenting the vast possibilities for industrial cooperation.

Beyond production and maintenance, Rosoboronexport is positioning itself as a comprehensive solutions provider. The company aims to offer its partners the construction of high-tech service facilities at local and regional levels for the repair and maintenance of unmanned systems from various manufacturers.

Focal Point
The Middle East, particularly the Gulf countries, has emerged as a focal point of interest for unmanned systems. The company is poised to offer not only local production, technology transfer, and licensing but also the establishment of joint ventures and service centres on the customer’s premises.

In 2023, Rosoboronexport began promoting the Orlan-30 UAV system for export. This advanced version of the Orlan-10E has generated considerable attention, particularly in the Middle East.

The Orlan-30 is designed for aerial reconnaissance, target search, detection, and recognition in the visible or infrared range. Its capability to provide target designation for precision-guided weapons makes it a valuable asset for both day and night operations.

The Orlan UAV series is not limited to aerial reconnaissance; it extends into electronic warfare capabilities against enemy UAVs. The integration of ground-based electronic warfare systems, developed by the same developer, enhances the counter-UAV capabilities of the Orlan UAVs. This holistic approach to UAV development positions the company as a leader in addressing multifaceted challenges in modern warfare.

Drone’s Versatility
Foreign partners are expected to express interest in the Orion-E long-endurance reconnaissance/strike drone, renowned for its modular design and open architecture. The drone’s resourcefulness allows for the utilisation of various types of “smart munitions,” making it adaptable to diverse operational environments and tasks.

The Kub-E loitering munition, another highlight of Rosoboronexport’s offerings, is expected to find demand in the global market. Capable of engaging single and group targets, including infrastructure and manpower, the Kub-E exemplifies innovation in unmanned systems.

UMEX 2024 marked a critical juncture in the global drone landscape. Rosoboroexport’s ambitious offer underscores the growing influence of Russia in this domain and its willingness to challenge established players. A new era of international collaboration in the production and service of Russian UAVs is anticipated .
