Saab Secures NATO Order for RBS 70 Bolide Missiles

Saab has recently received a substantial order worth SEK 350 million from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) for RBS 70 Bolide missiles, set to be delivered throughout 2027.

This acquisition stands as a testament to the sustained interest and reliance of NATO-affiliated nations on Saab’s advanced missile systems.
Görgen Johansson, heading Saab’s Dynamics sector, stated, “Through the order from the NSPA, we see NATO countries’ continued interest in our missile systems. This order is proof of their trust in our knowledge and in the RBS 70 system.”

The RBS 70 system has already established its presence in more than 19 countries, with over 1,600 systems in operation and an impressive delivery count of over 18,000 missiles.

Threat Neutraliser
The Bolide missile, being the latest iteration, represents the system’s 3rd generation, boasting an all-encompassing capability to neutralise a diverse array of threats.

Its range extends beyond nine kilometres, targeting fixed and rotary wing aircraft while also catering to smaller threats like cruise missiles and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Notably, the missile provides altitude coverage surpassing 5,000 metres, ensuring comprehensive protection against aerial threats.
This significant order not only reaffirms the trust placed in Saab’s expertise but also underscores the adaptability and efficacy of the RBS 70 system in countering evolving security challenges prevalent in today’s operational landscape.

Mobile Defender
The RBS 70, a short-range anti-aircraft missile system, operates either as a portable single unit or as part of a nine-system battery with the Giraffe land mobile surveillance radar. Its laser beam riding guidance system tracks its own signal for precision, coupled with a Clip-On Night Device (COND) for day-night functionality.

Initially using Mk 1 interceptors, upgraded Mk 1+ and Mk 2 versions are in use, alongside the Bolide missile since 2003, enhancing speed and manoeuvrability.

The 2011 RBS 70 NG upgrade integrates thermal imaging, automatic target tracking, and a versatile sight module compatible with all RBS 70 missile generations.

Its portability and technical prowess make it vital for versatile air defence across various terrains. Resistant to jamming, thanks to its laser guidance, the system ensures reliability.

The Bolide missile expands interception capabilities across multiple targets. When linked in a battery setup, its effectiveness multiplies, especially with the addition of a surveillance radar.

Furthermore, the RBS 70 NG’s adaptable sight module seamlessly integrates across platforms, from Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS) to combat vehicles, enhancing overall operational adaptability and efficiency.
