U.S. Army Gets More Shadow TUAS

Textron Systems Corporation, a Textron Inc. company, recently announced the sale of 36 Shadow aircraft in the latest Block III configuration to the U.S. Army. The total contract award value of US$66 million includes ongoing engineering services to continue fielding and supporting the new Block III system configuration.

“We are proud to maintain our strong partnership of more than 20 years with the U.S. Army on the Shadow programme,” said Senior Vice President David Phillips of Textron Systems. “The Shadow Block III will support the customer with the enhanced capabilities soldiers need to fulfil today’s and tomorrow’s missions.”

The Shadow Block III system builds on the proven success of previous configurations. The upgraded system incorporates design improvements, allowing for increased availability to operate in adverse weather conditions, the latest high-definition day-and-night video payload, increased engine power and reliability with a reduced acoustic signature, enhanced manned-unmanned teaming with the Army’s Apache assets and an advanced communications relay. The system is ready and able to provide aerial support to customers, even in the most challenging of environments.

With 1.2 million flight hours and counting, the Shadow system’s proven track record provides a solid foundation for continued development and use around the world.

All-digital System
Textron Systems’ Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (TUAS) has been used by U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Special Operations groups, the Australian Defence Force, and the Swedish and Italian armed forces. More than 85 per cent of those hours took place in combat, under some of the most strenuous operational and environmental conditions. Today’s Shadow Version 2 Block III is an all-digital system, optimised for new multi-mission, single-sortie profiles and manned/unmanned teaming, and paired with interoperable Universal Ground Control Station (UGCS) and remote products for collaboration across the battlespace.

The Shadow TUAS is reportedly the only system of its size in the world to have surpassed one million flight hours. With increased endurance and payload capacity over previous versions, the Shadow V2 Block III delivers an in-field advantage with set up in minutes.

Textron Systems supports the Shadow TUAS with skilled operations, training, supply chain management, sustainment and upgrades – all reflecting more than 30 years of UAS experience.

Textron Systems is a world leader in unmanned air, surface and land products, services and support for aerospace and defence customers. Harnessing agility and a broad base of expertise, the company’s innovative businesses design, manufacture, field and support comprehensive solutions that expand customer capabilities and deliver value.
