Vulcano 127 Guided Ammunition Gets Ready for Action
The German Navy recently completed the operational suitability test of the Vulcano 127 guided ammunition with frigate F125, which it will start fielding now.
According to the Italian and German governments’ requirements, Diehl Defence and Leonardo developed and qualified the precision-guided ammunition family Vulcano 127 and 155 mm. Compatibility with all 127 mm and 155 mm weapon systems has been ensured.
During the fielding, the German Navy completed the operational suitability test of the Vulcano 127mm guided ammunition, fired from frigate F125 with Leonardo’s 127/64 Lightweight naval gun. This comprises the whole ammunition flow in the weapon, including programming and firing with proof of range and precision under operating conditions. These successful tests will result in the German Navy adopting the system along with the Italian Navy.
Vulcano can achieve extended ranges of 70 km for Vulcano 155 and 80 km for Vulcano 127 in conjunction with accuracy against stationary and moving targets.
Besides the basic configuration with a Height of Burst (HoB) sensor, other configurations were qualified, with terminal homing sensors SAL (Semi-Active Laser) and FarIR (Far Infrared), which are deployed against stationary and moving single targets with accuracy.
The different capabilities of the Vulcano family make it one of the most accurate artillery ammunition for land and naval applications worldwide.
The multi-role, Insensitive High-Explosive (IHE) warhead with pre-fragmented tungsten splinters is effective against soft targets, vehicles, semi-armoured vehicles, infrastructures and all typical infantry command posts.
Vulcano 127mm is a family of subcalibre ammunition for 127/54 and 127/64 Leonardo naval artillery systems composed of an unguided projectile called BER (Ballistic Extended Range) and a guided one called GLR (Guided Long Range).
The Vulcano projectile can improve the performance of other ammunition of the same calibre, both in range and accuracy while maintaining compatibility with the in service 127mm gun barrels. The outline of the ammunition is almost identical to conventional rounds, which enables it to be handled without any additional logistical burden.
The main application of the Vulcano 127 GLR is for long-range, high-accuracy fire support against stationary and moving point targets with reduced likelihood of collateral damage and for precise surface engagements against moving ships.
The ammunition, both BER and GLR, have been qualified according to the relevant STANAGs under joint Italian and German MoD supervision.
