C-390 Set to Land in Asia, will Reshape Korean Air Power

South Korea’s Defence Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) has selected Embraer’s C-390 Millennium as the winner of its Large Transport Aircraft (LTA) II public tender. This landmark deal marks the C-390’s maiden voyage into Asia, with South Korea becoming its first regional customer.

While the number of aircraft and contract value remain classified, the agreement promises a fleet of C-390 Millenniums specifically configured to meet the Republic of Korea Air Force’s (ROKAF) needs.

Embraer’s commitment extends beyond delivery, encompassing comprehensive support with training, ground equipment, and readily available spare parts.

The value of the contract will be included in Embraer’s backlog in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Embraer’s commitment includes a consortium and offset package. This involves a substantial portion of C-390 Millennium parts to be manufactured locally by Korean partner companies. The initiative encompasses the establishment of a local Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) provider.

Bosco da Costa Jr, President and CEO, Embraer Defense & Security, said: “We welcome the Republic of Korea Air Force to the growing number of air forces operating the C-390 Millennium — the most modern military tactical transport aircraft. The aircraft has proven its capability to complete a wide range of missions with great efficiency, serviceability and speed.

This is a new era in Brazil-South Korea relations and together with our Korean partners, we are committed to growing the capabilities of its aerospace and defence industries.”

Seventh Nation
South Korea joins the ranks as the seventh nation to select the C-390, following Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

The C-390 is redefining military airlift and challenging the thinking behind current and future generation platforms, with multi-mission capability, reliability and interoperability built by design.

Since its deployment with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019 and more recently with the Portuguese Air Force in 2023, the aircraft has showcased its ability, dependability, and performance.

With over 10,800 flight hours logged, it maintains an impressive operational availability of around 80 per cent and achieves a mission completion rate exceeding 99 per cent, highlighting its exceptional productivity.

The C-390 can carry more payload (26 tonnes) compared to other medium-sized military transport aircraft and flies faster (470 knots) and farther, being capable of performing a wide range of missions such as transporting and dropping cargo and troops, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, and humanitarian missions, operating on temporary or unpaved runways such as packed earth, soil, and gravel.

Multirole Marvel
Configured as the KC-390 with air-to-air refuelling, it excels as both tanker and receiver, recently demonstrating this capability by efficiently refuelling from another KC-390 using installed pods.

The aircraft redefines military aviation, offering matchless mobility, flexibility, and productivity at minimal operational costs. This modern platform ensures optimal fleet performance through high availability.Building over decades of development experience, it incorporates the most advanced and proven technologies and design concepts.

The C-390 can also be reconfigured for all missions in three hours or less. Reducing time on the ground and in the air will improve mission success and help save lives.

Cargo King
An unobstructed, continuous width cargo compartment with a volume of 169 m3 (5,970 ft3) was optimised to provide extra room for over and outsize cargo, accommodating combinations of vehicles, cargo on pallets, troops, medical patients and auxiliary fuel tanks, among other items.

To facilitate the boarding of taller vehicles effortlessly, the C-390 is equipped with a lengthy cargo ramp, effectively reducing the angles involved in loading and unloading. This feature streamlines the process, ensuring smoother operations. Complementing this, hydraulic stabiliser struts and a proficient cargo winch work in tandem, accelerating ground operations significantly and notably reducing turnaround time.

Embraer, a product of a strategic initiative by the Brazilian Government, came into existence in 1969. The company emerged from government roots to become a global force. Privatised in 1994, it has cemented its position as a leader in defence and space solutions. Its portfolio spans aircraft and sophisticated border surveillance systems, marking its significant presence in the international landscape of defence technology.
