Exail Navigates French OPVs Towards Precision

Exail, a leading global player in naval navigation, has been selected by Naval Group to improve the navigation capabilities of the French Navy’s Ocean Patrol Vessels (OPVs).

The move is part of the French Directorate General of Armament (DGA) Ocean Patrol Vessel programme, which focuses on renewing the high seas patrol vessels based in Brest and Toulon, and the public service patrol vessels based in Cherbourg.

Under the collaboration, Exail will supply a comprehensive suite of navigation hardware, including Phins Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) and Netans Data Distribution Units (DDU).
Offering highly precise navigation data resilient to signal disturbances, the Phins INS will enhance the OPVs’ operational capabilities, improving navigational accuracy and situational awareness in diverse maritime conditions.

Leveraging Exail’s Fibre Optic Gyroscope (FOG) technology, it guarantees durability while minimising maintenance needs, providing a reliable solution for coastal surveillance missions.

Comprehensive Navigation Solutions
Phins INS systems offer a comprehensive suite of features and benefits, including International Maritime Organization certification, all-in-one high-accuracy three-dimensional (3D) positioning with heading, roll, and pitch, compatibility with multiple aiding sensors such as Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), Electromagnetic (EM) log, Global Positioning System (GPS), Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL), Long Baseline and depth sensors.

Additional features include Ethernet connectivity with a web server graphical user interface (GUI), Network Time Protocol (NTP) synchronisation capability, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) option for high-accuracy platform stabilisation, low latency, static and dynamic alignment modes with and without Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) support, a four Gigabyte (GB) embedded data logger, and 24/7 worldwide technical assistance.

Reliable System Backbone
Serving as the cornerstone of the navigation system, the Netans system will ensure the OPVs receive consistent, reliable, and precise navigation data, while adhering to safety and security standards and addressing potential cybersecurity risks.
“We are honoured to have been selected by Naval Group. This contract reinforces our long-standing partnership,” said Pierre-Louis Roudaut, Regional Sales Manager at Exail. “Through this collaboration, we are fulfilling our commitment to simplify the lives of sailors by offering a thoughtfully designed system that precisely addresses their needs for reliability and performance.”
With more than 70 per cent of the French Navy’s fleet already outfitted with its systems, the contract reinforces Exail’s dominant position within the French defence market.
The agreement builds on the company’s ongoing contributions to key naval programmes, including the Flotlog fleet replenishment project, the advanced FDI first-rank frigates, and the BSAOM vessels, which provide overseas support and assistance.
